Lack of quality for service 2022

    RANT
Is that not a thing where you are? If I sign into my online banking to send a payment to someone new, I have to enter the account name, account number and sort code, and the next step is that my bank contacts their bank to make sure the three match. If they don't, I get a warning on screen to...

That brings back memories, I was an avid reader of Raymond Chen's blog back in the day, along with Larry Osterman and a handful of others. And the whole MS Channel 9 video thing was interesting at the time.

My local FB group is forever whining about the "fat cat" local council CEO salary which is about £150k. As if getting rid of that expense would mean they could afford to fix all the bad roads, and do everything else. That'd pay for about a mile of new road.

Well, at least you know there was an album release, unlike most (*) people who wear "Ramones" T-shirts. ( * no idea if it's "most people", but it probably is. )

Thanks, I usually score pretty highly on these "how not-very-good are you?" things, but I'm well under half marks on that one. Makes me feel better.

I use a pencil. I always used to have trouble with pens running out at the wrong time, clogging up, and just refusing to write. A nice sharp pencil never really has that kind of a problem. My main problem is that after years of typing, my writing is atrocious - some of it even I can't read...

We've had similar near me in the UK. I needed a new BB connection in March, had a flyer through the door in February with the local rep contact details and "contact me for special offers" so I sent an email asking about start dates, prices etc. I heard nothing, so went with a standard FTTC...

Ask Me Anything About SaaS ( I'm building my 7th )

    GOLD! HOT! SAAS / APPS
That touches on my post in "hobby as a business" elsewhere on here - I'm making some specific products (not software related, but not really relevant), but it's not a big market, it just happens to be one where I have some experience that I can make use of. If I was thinking about it properly as...

That's not strictly true: Map of London bike paths, bike routes, bike stations I must admit I thought there were more, but I suspect some of them were temporary while covid was in full force and there wasn't as much traffic on the road, strangely the time when having a dedicated bike lane is...

What Would Your Passion Business Be?

    HOT! QUESTION
My "passion business" is making body repair panels for a certain make and model of classic car. When I was restoring mine there were plenty of things I made for myself that I could make for other people. The reason it's a passion business and not just a business is that the car concerned is...

IT guy saying hello and joining The Fastlane

    INTRO
I think that's a significant point. I recall when I was back in full time work (I also worked in IT, in the North West of England) we had a pretty successful vertical market application, which was a market leader albeit in a small market. We tried a couple of other things to broaden the...

What Fastlane Business/Brand should I build?

    IDEA
Another way to look at it is that you have very little to lose by at least having a go as long as you're reasonably sensible about it. There are plenty of start-up threads on here that you can use for inspiration and ideas.

E-commerce Business Treading Water - Looking to Bring It New Life

    IDEA SIDE HUSTLE EXECUTION
Thanks for the reference. If this is anything to go by, I will continue to walk the four feet to the amp when I need to change something on it: JVC RM-SAV6U INTEGRATED AMPLIFIER AX-V6 GENUINE REMOTE FULLY REFURBISHED | eBay £50 ! So to save you a lot of time digging through boxes (my OCD...

E-commerce Business Treading Water - Looking to Bring It New Life

    IDEA SIDE HUSTLE EXECUTION
It's an AX-V6. I did a search and nothing came up. It's decades old, and it came to me without one, so I'm not really looking for one. It doesn't help that I don't know the part number of the remote.

E-commerce Business Treading Water - Looking to Bring It New Life

    IDEA SIDE HUSTLE EXECUTION
A minor thing, and I realise that this isn't a "review my web site" thread, but I'd probably lose the massive logo that appears in the "shop by brand" selection after I've chosen a brand. I just went to your site to see if you had a remote for my JVC AV amp, and there is a massive pixellated JVC...

Loneliness is taking a toll on my life

    OFF-TOPIC
I'm reading this with interest as I don't really know people, other than a very small group of mates, and I've always struggled to get to know people. Mainly I think it's a self-confidence thing - I can't imagine why anyone would actually want to talk to me, and that mindset doesn't help from...

Your advice for someone who is generally disrespected but always dreamed of big things for himself in life

    HOT! MINDSET
If that isn't an extra reason to make a success out of something, anything, I don't know what is. The ability to rub their noses in it is very motivating. Even though everyone else's advice is much more worthwhile - forget about what other people think. If they're toxic, and you can, drop them...

How much should I have before I purchase an exotic car?

    OFF-TOPIC QUESTION
Indeed, I believe the shortage of electronic components is making new car production difficult, leading to an increase in used car prices. I'm not sure if that's having the same effect in supercar low-volume production as it does anywhere else.

How much should I have before I purchase an exotic car?

    OFF-TOPIC QUESTION
Probably, but that just goes back to what MJ was saying about affordability. My insurance, for example, has a "voluntary excess", the bit of the bill that I have to pay out of any claim, so for vandalism I might have to pay the first £100 of any claim. I might have a limited number of these...

How much should I have before I purchase an exotic car?

    OFF-TOPIC QUESTION
I find with cars you've got three main costs - the cost of buying it, the cost of running it (the definite stuff - fuel, insurance, servicing), and the margin you need so that you're not worrying about it all the time - what if it needs the clutch replacing, what if I blow the engine up, what if...
