Software Developer Roundtable: Share your tips, tools and strategies

    HOT!
Cool. At my last company we did the same with our app. Anyone here familiar with Progressive Web Apps (PWA)? I have yet to dive deep on them, but I usually code using a PWA starter for Vue.js, and I am building my next app using Nuxt.js which is a PWA / SSR -ready Vue.js starter. Also, some...

Journey of the German - Building a web design agency

    EXECUTION
Invision App is okay, but in my experience, clients need to see an actual working demo of their site to give decent feedback. I once had a client get upset because his site was 'broken.' He couldn't grasp that I had sent him an image, not an actual website =\ Really... when dealing with your...

Looking great! Was learning AWS a fair part of the bootcamp or would you learn just enough to get your app live?

@PeterCastle - that's a great tip. It's so much fun trying new stuff, I could easily fool myself into thinking I'm doing something productive when in fact I'm just playing.

If you don't mind me chiming in, I found having clients.yourdomain.com/client1, clients.yourdomain.com/client2, clients.yourdomain.com/client3, etc. to be the best approach. This means you have a subdomain called 'clients' or 'demo'... then you use a subFOLDER in the directory where that...

Yes! John's stuff is really good. And in this game, you never stop learning. Am I right? When you're learning, you don't always need an expert but just someone that's a little farther down the path from you. Have you ever worked in a team environment with Python, or is it mostly solo work...

New Freelancers: Here's how to start a personal website to market yourself.

    SIDE HUSTLE
Thanks. Yeah I found that with those looking for freelancers appreciated the personal touch. I was quick to suggest a phone call to "meet", as well. All of that served to remove the fear of dealing with an unknown person over the internet, and made it much easier to secure a deal and get paid.

New Freelancers: Here's how to start a personal website to market yourself.

    SIDE HUSTLE
hi @Aaron T - thanks! yeah I had dragged my feet on starting a personal site for a long time, and when I did, I had a much easier time turning prospects into regular clients. Now to be clear, above I'm advocating a personal website, but it should be professional content. By 'personal' I mean...

I haven't used Wix myself, but I know of them, of course. I would recommend keeping as much control as you can, and that would mean keeping your site on your own servers. WordPress is best because of the huge array of plugins you can use. As you grow, you'll easily be able to add things like...

How to get out of parents house?

    MINDSET
Be aware that you may just be switching one set of challenges for another. - can you easily afford the cost of living on your own - food, rent, transportation? - would you have to work more to pay for these things? You may then find yourself just as tired and distracted, and unable to study...

Great stuff, @Elbert Dockery . Lots with CS backgrounds here. That's great. And I definitely agree with the sales and marketing skills for SWEs. I first realized this after finding SimpleProgrammer.com (which is how I learned about TMF, actually). I've been super interested in Python for a...

Great thread! It looks like a bootcamp can really pay off. I started coding back in 2015, but I went the Treehouse, Front End Masters, PluralSight route. I'm excited to see this finished!

@AustinS28 That's excellent! I'll have to look at that thread. I was with a local startup here in Ottawa. They've been laying people off consistently for months. Startup can be fun, but it's hard work and the party can end so quickly if you're at a startup that is living on venture capital. If...

For sure. Later on, once you're making money and want to do something else, you can always move the site then. Most of the time, though, moving your site around won't really be needed.

I've noticed there are a fair number of software developers here on the forum, so I thought it would be a good idea to create a place where we can discuss strategories, tools, workflows, etc. to help each other get better at what we do. Perhaps start with an intro to yourself with your skillset...

From employee to entrepreneur...back to employee! Help!

    INTRO
A few points: There's nothing wrong with employment in the short term. You get money needed for basic necessities, and if you're lucky, you may even get the chance to learn something. Look for opportunity to learn new things on the job. MJ gave a great example of reading books on coding while...
