    night shift

    RANT
Be careful with this. You are treading a fine line here. 1) IP. If you are doing your own work on their time, they can fight you to get it. They're paying for those hours and what you create on their time is theirs. 2) Are you trading value for value? 3) Integrity. I understand the temptation...

Trying to Get at Least 5% Returns...

    INVESTING
Hey Whizkid, that was my plan for quite a while too. But guess what I found...MJ was right. After nearly 20 years, my savings had only grown about 6% on average and sadly that's not enough to quit my day job! Consequently I've ceased to rely on that strategy. At only 27, you don't have enough...

My Own Personal Section of the Library

I've been listening to the people around me to see if the are any others in my community that want out of the Slowlane. I've occasionally suggested to some folks that they could get out of their ruts by starting their own business, but no one has expressed any interest at all. I know it's a...

    Leasing Question

As I understand it, the rental income has to be reported as regular income and taxed accordingly on the personal filing. However the business considers the rent a business expense which is just subtracted from total revenue. I don't think there are any other taxes paid on that money.

    Words are weapons

    MINDSET
Quite true! Just a few weeks ago, I printed out the following in large bold font and hung it on my cubicle wall (in my current slowlane job). "Never communicate by email! Always use the phone! Only send Data by email!" I'm learning to practice better communication skills. Many times an email...

    Leasing Question

Hello Folks, I've got a question regarding a home office/shop. Has anyone tried leasing the location that you already own to your business? A local business owner told me that he personally owns the location that his business operates from, and he leases the space to his own business. That...

    Atlas Shrugged

    BOOKS
Please note that this refers to a discussion between @Delmania and myself regarding "Meditations" by Marcus Aurelius written about 180 AD, and not the OP topic of Ayn Rand's work. Education superiority?

    Atlas Shrugged

    BOOKS
Forgive me, it's been a couple years since. If I remember correctly, the author switched subjects frequently, which caused me pain. I suppose I have a 1 track mind. There were also frequent references to historical people/events that were not on the tip of my tongue. I was stopping frequently to...

I started this one, but found it prohibitive to finish. I'm glad you did.

How do I keep my employer from claiming ownership of my business?

IMO, first ask yourself this...Do I want to quit working at the tire place and start my own business in software? YES! If yes, say nothing to your boss and find another job asap. Problem solved. Then create your own company and run with it. Once you've got a finished product, you can always...

    Atlas Shrugged

    BOOKS
I too found that "Atlas Shrugged" & "The Fountainhead" were hard to put down. I followed them with "Anthem", "We the Living" & "Capitalism: The Unknown Ideal". All excellent reads with distinct purpose in writing. "Anthem" was an interesting view of a dystopian future. "We the Living" was an...

    My own way

    EXECUTION
If I understand correctly...you are 18, and about half way through a 2 year degree/certificate at a local college. You said this about yourself: Sounds like your decision has already been made. As you might guess, my suggestion is to finish your degree/certificate. You will need some source of...

Am I the only one? (Physical product invention)

    HOT!
I've been reading various posts on the forum, and have found very few folks with a plan similar to mine. I believe there might be a member that has a tool manufacturing business, but I'm not sure that I recall that correctly. I can't be the only one that believes inventing a physical product (or...

What's your Lambo? What's your WHY or PURPOSE?

    NOTABLE! CHAT
My Lambo is FREEDOM. I could spend an hour expounding on the ways it would work out in my own life, but I think we can all understand it.

Undeleted - How to break into sales & never go hungry?

    HOT! MARKETING
You never know until you try. (But then again, there is no try, only do.) I've seen some guys in project management and/or sales engineering that obviously had no background in the field. The barrier to entry in these jobs will vary widely from place to place. If you want it badly enough, the...

Selling Product? Here’s a crazy realization I had: Optimize Your Client’s Cash Flow. Make 2.5x More

    MARKETING
It's quite common for businesses to prefer to not hold inventory. For one thing you get taxed on your inventory at the end of the year. Many companies today use inventory turns as a measure of efficiency. So many bean counters prefer to minimize buys to the next production run. (Edit: Never...

Undeleted - How to break into sales & never go hungry?

    HOT! MARKETING
If your long-term goal is to invent products of value and provide them yourself, you might consider getting a job in manufacturing as a project manager or sales engineer. These will give you some great skills to take with you.
