    Jumping on the bandwagon

    PUBLISHING
Lol, this was me to a "T" when I first started my progress thread. I'll be the first to admit to being humbled by the process. I feel this is more me now, as I look toward more polished, full-length products while having learned to keep my mouth shut with such limited experience under my belt...

ACX - Turning Your Book Into an Audio Book

    PUBLISHING
Even if it takes you a year to break even on that $6k, every year of profit after that makes it more financially sound than the royalty option. Smart move going for upfront payment, imo. I'd imagine it's highly genre dependent. 40/100 sounds like non-fiction numbers to me.

"Beats by Dre" sells to Apple for $3.2 Billion

    OFF-TOPIC
Even with my limited knowledge about Dre, it's really obvious why he was able to find success by leveraging his music career. He's not a "thug," "gansta," or "hustla," guy is an astute businessman.

Thanks for the informative post. Let us know how it goes for you and any info you can share on the process/experience. As an aside, I've read numerous times to avoid the royalty option at all costs since it can really end up costing you a fortune in the long run. For example, if you assume $2...

[PROGRESS THREAD] ChickenHawk's Self-Published Fiction EBooks

    GOLD!
Exactly what I thought. Glad to see you're staying indie, CH, seems like a wise choice until a publisher can show you a marketing plan that blows you away and that you can't do yourself. HM Ward wrote a pretty insightful thread on this at Kboards, but I can't seem to find it now. The jist was...

Upside down equity in a vehicle.

This. Although pointing out mistakes in the past don't answer your question. I'm not really schooled in loans or whatever, but if you're liquidating your life, maybe utilize what you're getting rid of to find a way to get a loan through a bank at a lower interest rate that you use to pay the...

    Greetings from California!

    INTRO
Probably a good idea, but as Carrie said, much of this can be figured out on your own, depending on how your debt is factored up. If it's split over multiple sources, consolidation might be a route to look into, but, as with anything, do your homework first. My main point wasn't so much about...

    Greetings from California!

    INTRO
Welcome. Very honest intro. Many of the posts and posters here can provide you with information that is absolutely priceless. One piece of advice I'll throw in here is this: I don't know your full situation, but instead of the hard focus on your debt, why not setup a debt repayment plan/budget...

Love it. Very helpful for new romance writers. Keep updating! Your posts make people feel lazy for not doing half as much as you! It's inspiring. :)

    Does Amazon promote free ebooks?

    PUBLISHING
If the novel is standalone and not meant to promote other titles, then setting it to perma-free doesn't really make any sense. So KDP Select promotion becomes the only option that makes sense to give out free copies of your book. What I was trying to get at with KDP Select free promotion were...

    Self-Publishing Scaling

    PUBLISHING
You do it to find what your genre seems to want and expect. No two books are exactly alike, but you can get a really good feel for stories that your genre will embrace vs stories that they won't. A very crude example: Using magic in a sci-fi book, or not putting any effort into explaining any of...

    Self-Publishing Scaling

    PUBLISHING
Read and study top-sellers in your genre. Find common themes, break their stories down into scene progression charts and beat sheets, find the gems that make the stories resonate with your genre audience. Having an intimate understanding of a particular fiction genre really just boils down to...

    Does Amazon promote free ebooks?

    PUBLISHING
The KDP select program is fairly useless unless you're using it to promote a series of books. Example: Making book #1 in your series free for the sole purpose of generating sales to books #2 and #3 in your series. After a book comes off of free promotion through KDP select, any sales rank it...

    Please critique my landing page

Some really great advice in this thread -- not surprisingly (Fastlane Forum ftw). Agree with other posters about reducing the text and going for animation/video with intent to sell and educate simultaneously. Honestly, how many people go around their daily lives worrying about environmental...

Thanks! Hope that last update didn't come off like an "I'm quitting" post, because I'm definitely not. I still have every intention of outranking a ChickenHawk or (insert self-publishing fastlaner here) book and making my goal. Maybe just not as fast as I had initially planned. :)
