    If Paypal is an issue for the contractor, the onus is on them to make it easier. They can try and setup Stripe, Braintree, etc. Wire transfer (but depending on what amounts you are transferring may be a large %)

    Well said. I find you can "normalize" the stories to make everything sound less impressive. For example, when I tell people I travelled I remind them that I was working 3/4 of the time.

    Personally I'd pick the lowest cost/fees card I could reasonably get for minimal effort and move on to the next task that's going to get me closer to my end game goal.

    This is really the situation. Buying a house is great for everyday people because there's a big bad bank that is going to take their house if they don't pay up - it's forced saving. If you're strict and going to do something useful with that money elsewhere, renting can be beneficial.
