Which is why I'm mentioning it. :-) It's a key concept of the book. I'm trying to get clear on it myself.

I found this comment online to help clarify: "As someone who is married to and associates with self-proclaimed Objectivists, I have always had a problem with Rand's word choice. It's true, she uses certain words such as altruism, selfishness, and sacrifice in a manner consonant with early 19th...

As long as the afterlife is real no. If not, whoops. Did you read that article I posted? If so, if you take how Comte defines it then there are many who are altruistic. And it is the noblest goal to achieve. It's at the polar opposite of individualism. One thing is for sure, after reading...

Not in terms of Ayn Rand :-) Let me turn the question then. How are you defining it then? Yes, I'm using an extreme case, but there is a limit of how much sacrifice you'll do for your child. Everyone has a limit. Love isn't sacrificial in terms of Ayn Rand.

Well, there are things we can tell 100% fact what Ayn Rand meant on specific topics. Yes, you can think about how you wish, but that's not what her intent was. I certainly don't tell how others should think, it's your life. LOL what chapter are we are in again? I've been reading ahead. For...

How so? Sacrificing for your kids has a limit before it is destructive to you. That's not to say you shouldn't love your children, you most definitely should. But there is a limit to use the child at home and not working before you kick their rear out of your house.

I initially thought yes, but I donno though. If you listen to religion it talks about how you will be paid back... eventually. Perhaps in the afterlife even. You are sacrificing now but will be paid later. Maybe.

? I'm not sure I understand this part. These are topics very much discussed in this chapter and the previous ones. It's not like I'm getting ahead of the book. I'm not positioning myself as anything other than someone who has read this book and other books of hers. That's all. I'm also here to...

Your statement I think is mostly right. Though if you are altruistic you are giving up something for others. You expect others to reciprocate because it is expected. I think they are related but yes not the same. It boils down to how we expect others to behave.

This article does a good job defining her definition of Altruism and where it comes from - The philosopher Comte's definition she's rejecting. Which by modern definition has been convoluted...

I'm mentioning these terms because they are key concepts of the book. They should be discussed. Rightly or wrongly. I'm correcting what's mentioned because of how they are defined by Ayn Rand, not me. Sure you can interpret it a different way but there are parts she has specifically clarified...

Ugh. First of all, I meant this as a joke. So lighten up. Hmm...you wanted a discussion on the book. What are we doing this for then?? To waste time? I haven't given away anything about the story plot. I have given additional info about the reasoning of what characters are doing in the book...

Yea but I don't think it happens in the book that often. This is really her non-fiction (which came after Atlas) which discusses these terms and puts what's discussed in the book in more concrete terms.

Yes, that's IMHO the flaw in her writing but again it's fiction - it's an ideal. Most definitely yes. You are bettering yourself by making the world a better place - a trader principle. It's a win-win proposition. In my eyes, she's 100% right on this. The only way to get wealthy is to add...

Perhaps read the book first :-) You can understand the book without understanding Objectivism or her terms.

Yes. According to Ayn Rand being rationally selfish is the best thing you can do. Note the word rationally in there, as that's a key concept as well. I don't claim to know everything about Ayn Rand, nor study all of her writings, nor am I an Objectivist. I just have read a lot of the subject...

I'm using it the way Ayn Rand defines it. Yes I agree it's odd and really needs another term for it. Don't shoot the messenger :) It is the law of reciprocity and mentioned in the book Influence. https://www.amazon.com/dp/0205609996/?tag=tff-amazonparser-20

I never said you shouldn't sacrifice. Those are Ayn Rand's terms. I did say in the long term she is right though. Having a 30-year-old child home and not working and living off of you is wrong. They eventually need to be independent, productive members of society. Though having a child is a...
