    how to develop an idea?

    IDEA
I'm reading "The Art of the Start" by Guy Kawasaki. I'm not really reading it with an idea in my head, but its probably the best book I've read that has to do with starting a business. You should check it out.

1989 Mercedes Benz 300CE: The brakes are squeeky and the heat isn't currently working. But I'm going to keep this thing forever. Even after I'm in the Fastlane.

    Most dried up industries?

Yeah I own a Roland electronic drum set which was expensive, and then I acquired some software that allows me to midi out beats. It's really just a hobby of mine at this point. I have friends who use Fruity Loops and others who use keyboards that cost them $3k+, but there's nothing like using an...

    2009 Fastlaner Goals

Yes, as for now that is my focus. I'm having a dilemma with getting the designs on the pong balls, but if I can get past this its only going to cost me like $100-$200 to get it off the ground which is awesome.

    2009 Fastlaner Goals

In past years I used to write out detailed plans/goals but it would never quite go as I planned. Instead I want to make a vague goal of starting a fastlane business (something that is feasible, yet has growth potential) this year. I've been thinking about multiple ideas and I'm pretty sure I...

    Most dried up industries?

I think there's definitely room for more Radioheads. As far as rock is concerned, I think there is amazing opportunity for a band that can capture that old school classic rock guitar sound with new age drumming. Some bands like Radiohead and the Chili Peppers have got it a little bit, but no...

Your Own Personal Blog at Fastlane?

I would use it. I think it would be interesting because I think we all have a familiarity with each other about what kind of business each other is in (REI, start-up, etc) but it would be ever more interesting to read updates on what we're all doing. I vote yes.

Help me make a big decision.

Thank you for the advice everyone! You guys have helped me alot. yveskleinsky, I agree with. I have done well in high school and I imagine I'll do well in college. But I'm using college as a tool to buy more time to start a business so I can leave with a foundation. I think my biggest hangup...

What have you learned this year? (Updated: 2024)

    HOT! MINDSET
I think in terms of fastlane, I learned taking action on a business venture no matter how small is always better than inaction, even if you end up failing completely. In terms of non-business things, I learned that people change.

Help me make a big decision.

So I have a pretty big decision on my hands and since business and entrepreneurship are main priorities I'd love to know what this community thinks of my dilemma. I'm seventeen years old and I'm graduating high school in January. There have been multiple threads about college and if its...

    Is college completely necessary?

    HOT!
Right now I'm enrolling into a state community college this January. I have good enough grades to get into a four year school, but by going to community college I'm saving money and I'm able to graduate six months early from high school (literally in the coming weeks.) I think I'm going in...

    Most dried up industries?

I'm a huge fan of Richard Branson and after re-reading his autobiography I learned he examines every business opportunity to first see how boring it is. Then he decides how he's going to make things better/funner/faster/easier for the customer. His first venture was a record shop which be...

    Is college completely necessary?

    HOT!
I think everyone has their own individual plan, but I definitely don't think it's out of reach to make a successful business during or shortly after college. $10B big? Probably not. But it's definitely not unthinkable to take a different path than the job route and be able to make it as a young...

    Fastlane Sacrifices

    MINDSET
lol that's ok. I bought it in cash from my Uncle for $2k. It has alot of problems with it but I've learned alot about auto repair. I keep it looking good and clean which might be decieving, but the heat still doesn't work and I live in upstate New York. It's an '89 so I can't expect much.

    Fastlane Sacrifices

    MINDSET
Yes!! That's exactly what I'm going through. My sister just bought an '09 Civic with like $3k down and believe me it's extremely cool. I could easily take part of my $5k savings and do something similar. But I'm pimpin around my '89 Benz thats has over 150,000 miles on it and awful gas mileage...

    The Strangest Secret

    MINDSET
It kind of reminds me of a Tim Ferris video when he said he aims to be at the top because the majority of people are aiming for the middle/bottom. I listened to the entire thing and I thought it was great. I'd say this board is all about the "top 5," because each and every one of us are working...

online credit card processing more than $50 / month?!

    WEB/DIGITAL
Paypal has over 100 million users and although I don't own an online store myself, is there any merchant account provider that has more users than that? I agree with you. I was actually thinking about this when I was trying to buy my sister a watch online yesterday. I saw one on a site and it...

online credit card processing more than $50 / month?!

    WEB/DIGITAL
This is definitely an interesting thread. But let me pose this question, why would someone choose to do business with Authorize.net or a "merchant account" and not a more traditional company like Google Checkout/PayPal? PayPal/Checkout both charge about 2% per transaction plus about $0.25. It...

There are a few entrepreneurial forums I've belonged to in the past where there was a complete sub-forum just for people to pitch their ideas for potential investors. I've always thought of the Fastlane as something much more than that. To prevent spammers you can just ban all threads pitching...
