    Proofreading/Editing - Outsource? Software?

Oh drat! I meant to mention this.... I'm not sure I'd trust any editing software. Even Microsoft Word, I swear it's constantly trying to introduce mistakes into my writing, suggesting edits that I know are wrong. Maybe someday, software will be up to snuff, but I think we're a ways off yet.

    Proofreading/Editing - Outsource? Software?

For my first few books, I didn't really have a proofreader, except for my husband. For my last few books, I've had a great proofreader that I pay based on the book's length. (Happily, I don't really need an editor, just someone to catch typos, repeated words, etc.) I didn't find the proofreader...

An Open Letter to Jeff Bezos: (*Edit to clarify that I didn't write this letter, even if I do agree with every point.) (Excerpts from the Letter...) "Time and time again, we have proven to our reps and others at Amazon, that these books are breaking Amazon’s TOS. The scammers slap together a...

Probably, he uses a pen name, but as far as the photos, I believe that really is the guy who goes by the name of Chance Carter, only because some authors on the Kindle forums have apparently met him in real life. But one thing's for certain. Once you get a reputation for dishonesty, everything...

    Graphic Designer and Comic Artist

Welcome! I checked out your Web site, and wow, you've obviously got talent. A couple of suggestions: The home page: I couldn't be sure if the cityscape image was a sample of your work or if it was merely a stock image. If it's a sample of your work, I'd make that fact more obvious so clueless...

Imagine yourself a bestselling author on Amazon, raking in fame and fortune as a top romance novelist. Now, imagine your brand is gone in an instant, and why? Because you dedicated your energy to cheating, money-chasing, and skirting the rules rather than building a long-term brand. Just this...

What the heck???~!!!! That isn't the same type of scamming I was referring to, but that's absolutely shameful -- and sadly, not surprising. The whole Amazon store could use a lot more oversight. That really is awful.

    GOLD!
Just a quick update... I've recently put out another book. It's doing surprisingly good, considering that all romance segments of Amazon's bookstore are in awful shape, and I'm doing only the bare minimum of advertising. Basically, the romance lists remain a massive trainwreck as scammery has...

Oh yeah. It IS quite interesting. And here's where it gets more interesting. Around five years ago, Amazon won a $600 million cloud computer contract from the CIA. Shortly thereafter, Amazon's Jeff Bezos bought the Washington Post for $250 million. (To put this into context, Bezos used less than...

True on all counts! What's particularly interesting is that a lot of those cloud services are provided to the U.S. government. Traditionally, the government isn't known for being particularly cost-conscious. However, with a new administration, I've wondered if some of those lucrative contracts...

Interesting. There's definitely something strange going on with KU. I can't help but wonder at what point customers might start to wander away from Kindle Unlimited entirely. A challenge, I think, is that romance readers are particular voracious, with some fans reading a book a day. (!!!) At...

Thanks so much for the feedback and ideas, @SinisterLex! I always appreciate them! I like what you're thinking. The primary challenge, I think, would be scaling it up. Just to get crazy, let's say I priced a high-end book for $20 or even $200. I think it would be harder to sell a single high-end...

Oh hey, speaking of train-wrecks, here's a KBoards thread that discusses the dynamics of book-stuffing. The discussion eventually became so heated that the thread was locked, but you can still read through it if you're interested. It offers some pretty interesting pros and cons. KU Page...

Oh yeah, it's a nightmare for sure. Genuine indie romance authors are trying strategies like more frequent newsletter swaps, higher advertising budgets, heavier discounting, and including a free "bonus novel" at the end of each new release. Oddly enough, this is also fueling the death spiral as...

Did you get through my last post? Congrats if you did, because it was quite the rant, wasn't it? Now, where does this leave me? Already, I've pulled half of my books from Kindle Unlimited and published them wide. On the writing front, I'm still plugging along. I'm drafting my next book, with...

Book Cover-- What do you think of it?

    HOT!
I agree with others. It doesn't look like the kind of book covers you see on Amazon these days. My advice would be to browse the top books in your Amazon category and take a similar approach to what they did. (Without copying, of course.) To me, the main issue is the text. Even if you used the...

Here's a book that might help. It's Write to Market by Chris Fox (https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01AX23B4Q/?tag=tff-amazonparser-20). He has some really good insight on finding a profitable niche. . Oh yeah, it's always a balancing act, that's for sure. I think that's a great plan. You'd be...

Happily, you could keep your reviews, so don't let that stop you. :) You can change almost anything in your Kindle books and still keep your reviews. And if you got gushing reviews from strangers, I can definitely see the potential. Funny, I've replaced covers on more than half of my books. Did...

You're so welcome! Yup, I agree with you. The top-selling standalones tend to be full-length novels. I could see publishing a novella or two to gain more visibility, but I still believe that full-length works are where the real money (and visibility) is. Some writers will, for example, write a...
