    Fear Grips Google

    WEB/DIGITAL
Pretty iteresting article. For those that don't know, Bing is Microsoft's new search (er ... decision) engine to rival Google's. Link to article Link to Bing It'll be interesting how Bing - and the rivalry - evolves.

Question on filing a U.S. Patent

I haven't filed one personally - only through the company I work for. Just be aware that the process from filing to getting a patent can be many years, so don't expect to hear anything "soon". Have you talked to a patent attorney yet?

    Parents Whatdya Think?

I definitely don't want to turn this into a gender debate, but one of the fastest growing groups today is single fathers. Hint. Hint. :smxB: EDIT: "Hint. Hint." meaning, smell the opportunities.

I saw this on Digg and thought I'd share (with other cheapskates :smxB:) ... The Top 10 Grocery Coupon Websites for Cheapskates

    Image Storage: Compression and Bandwidth

    WEB/DIGITAL
Like terencechang mentioned, Amazon's cloud service is good, but can be costly. There are other cloud services out there with an array of services and prices, which may be better. Do a little digging. As far as image compression itself, JPEG is good and most image software packages allow you...

    What made Google, Google?

    WEB/DIGITAL
Didn't they start out either acquiring newsgroups from someone else (or using search capabilities within newsgroups)?

    Selecting a Property Management Company

    REAL ESTATE
I usually set a low "deductible" ($25 or so), but I also specify exactly what they are responsible for, too (e.g., light bulbs, security alarm batteries). That way there are no loose strings. The last thing I want is a call saying they tried to fix a leaking toilet by themselves by installing...

Who Here Is a Web Programmer?

    OFF-TOPIC
Since both are unreleased products right now, I can't get into specifics. However, I will say that neither use JQuery (they use another JS framework). And both use Java, heavily.

Who Here Is a Web Programmer?

    OFF-TOPIC
I agree with terencechang in that a talent board of some kind (and/or something on a member's post) would be good/interesting. I am fluent in enterprise web applications, although, most of my expertise is on the model/control (i.e., "backend") rather than the UI aspect. I know HTML, XML...

    Music YOU like these days?

    OFF-TOPIC
While I'll listen to some alternative rock playing on the radio today (I know, old fashioned), I still cling to "oldies" like Led Zeppelin, Lynard Skynard, pre-1980's Aerosmith, and the like. I'll even listen to my wife's Enia CD's from time to time.

Successful Site in 12 Months with Google Alone

    WEB/DIGITAL
Unless he's talking about client-side Java (i.e., applets), I really don't see the issue. It is harder to find hosting for servlets/jsp's than say PHP - and maybe that's what he means - but Java is a good web language on the server end for enterprise applications.

    My "Only $19.95!" Idea

    IDEA
LOL. My FIL did this for 2-3 YEARS with the truck he had. I guess one could say "beaten into your head" was literally what gave me this idea. :smx4:

    My "Only $19.95!" Idea

    IDEA
Definitely not on the same level as Hakrjak's laundry idea, but thought I'd see what people think of this "Only $19.95!" idea I thought of recently. A lot of people have cars with hydraulic hatchbacks. Some people have trucks with a cover/camper on back with the same hydraulic mechanism that...

Random Rant #1: Never Argue with a Slow Laner

I can relate. I had a coworker who I tried several times to "epiphamize". IOW, seeing how with a plan, hard work, persistence, blah, blah, blah, he too could be rich, instead of just dreaming about it. I only had a few talks about it with him, but each time I'd notice he would always have...

Anyone up for a lil Chaos Theory?

    OFF-TOPIC
Along these same lines, I often seem intrigued by people who may have had something accidental occur (like getting a fender bender) and respond by saying something like "If only I had left the house 5 minutes sooner." Yet, something you did (or didn't do) 15 years earlier could have sealed your...

    The Flipping Houses Jackpot

    REAL ESTATE
I am not a flipper (I like to buy and hold), but thought I'd chime in with a "buying cheap homes to rent" perspective. I strictly buy homes that only need cosmetic work (i.e., replacing carpet, replacing/installing appliances, replacing doors, replacing locksets, and so on are what I would...

Anyone teach at the College level?

    OFF-TOPIC
That sounds almost like a college Spanish teacher I had for Spanish II. She didn't get along too well with the administration, and told us point blank the first day that the lowest grade each of us would get would be a 'B' provided we attended class 90% of the time and "had fun." It turned out...

Targeting gender (female) ... what are your thoughts?

    WEB/DIGITAL
It's interesting, but up until the turn of the last century (i.e., 1900's), pink was a color associated with boys and blue was for girls.

    A Real (estate) Opportunity?

    REAL ESTATE
Not sure about the owner who had it when I first saw the property, but the person who bought it at the auction looked to be someone salivating to just own a property (could not have been, but he looked like it to me). Anyway, the place was a complete shambles when the guy took it over. He...
