One Little Step – advice for wantabes and newbie entrepreneurs

    HOT! MINDSET
I've seen the same thing before I left a job I'd had for 8 years. My FTE was a bad boss--which was ironically one of the best things that every happened to me. Fast forward years later, and while I'm not on the fastlane (yet), I earn 3x what I was paid at that job. A lot of my former colleagues...

18y/o as of Yesterday, Time to get a move on!

    INTRO
That's cool you're getting exposed to business concepts. Now that you're officially an adult, you can get your feet wet & start a non-theoretical business. By that, I mean: offer a product or service & get paid real money for it. The lessons you'll learn from trying stuff out in the real-world...

    INTRO
Happy belated bday! What lessons can you take from your family's transitions after the market collapse? From those lessons, what do you think you should or shouldn't do?

22 Pomodoros and the Power of Intrinsic Motivation

    MINDSET
Agree. Stop/start doesn't always work for coding or writing tasks that take a while to dig into. My problem when doing that focused work for more than, say, 60-90 minutes requires a good break--otherwise, I'm liable to time-waste afterwards as a "break."

I've failed at postponing "do what you love"

If you really want to focus on the video gaming industry, what about selling shovels instead of digging for gold?

    What habit changed your life?

    HOT! MINDSET
So true. I'd add: ...and then act on that insight. I end up ruminating on these kinds of things--like I see the wisdom but it takes some time for it to percolate to the surface & adjust my mindset to the point where I act on it.

Daily tracking on the things that sustantively move me forward. For example, since my revene (for now) is mainly consulting, I track: billable hours offers made clients/prospects contacted % of billed hours delegated Tracking billed hours--instead of client hours (which could include...

Think Big, and Then Think Bigger Than That.

    GOLD!
So, what's the alternative? Throwing up your hands & hoping things work out? There are a few points made in this thread: It takes similar effort, whether you pursue a small thing or a big thing. The likelihood of success between small vs. big things is can be similar; often, big things have a...

What are people NOT talking about anymore?

    HOT!
I see a common theme with flash-in-the-pan stuff: They all tout the promise of easy push-of-a-button wealth. That's why something like IOT--while filled with potential--hasn't taken off. IOT requires some actual knowledge of electronics & coding--both of which take time & effort to...

Silly bandz. Those things were like crack several years ago in elementary schools.

Short One Liner That Had A Strong Impact On You

    HOT! MINDSET
Said to me by a fastlaner when I was complaining about a slump in my business: Just make more money. At the time, it seemed trite. But I realized he was telling me that since I already knew how to get business, the solution was in my control. I just needed to stop getting in my own way, stop...

Can I criticize (or hate) a book I haven't read entirely?

    BOOKS
I've done the same thing. But you can't recapture that lost time--better to decide it's OK to ditch the book & spend that time more productively.

Can I criticize (or hate) a book I haven't read entirely?

    BOOKS
I used to feel bad if I didn't finish reading a book. Now, I don't care as much. If I get bored, frustrated, etc., I'll typically read ~20% before ditching it. So, out of a 300-page book, maybe up to 60 pages. Some books it's easier to decide--they're either really good (lots of meat)...

Perfectionism is a plague, introducing Johnny Neverstart!

    NOTABLE!
Very true. I took my 17-year-old son backpacking in the Grand Canyon a couple months ago, and he talked me into hiking out in 1 day--15+ miles, 6,000 feet elevation gain (like climbing the Empire State Building 5 times), while lugging a heavy pack. (And I'm not a runner, bicyclist, etc.). It was...

Perfectionism is a plague, introducing Johnny Neverstart!

    NOTABLE!
Completely agree that action beats analysis. (Speaking as someone who complex-ifies things...). However, I disagree--only slightly--about Johnny Neverstarts: I think the Johnny Neverstarts might actually want help--or at least the event-based outcome (e.g., $ dollars per month or year). Then...
