[PROGRESS THREAD] ChickenHawk's Self-Published Fiction EBooks

    GOLD!
I do think it's harder to gain traction, but I still don't think it's impossible. If you're a strong writer with a good "writing-voice", I still believe you can make money and gain an audience. For new writers, I might, however, suggest a different approach than I might've suggested a few years...

[PROGRESS THREAD] ChickenHawk's Self-Published Fiction EBooks

    GOLD!
Whew! Time for another update... Well, I've published my latest book, and here's the short summary. I'm glad it's over, and this isn't going to be a home run. But then again, I wasn't really expecting it to be. Basically, most of the last year has been spent finishing up old business -- writing...

At the moment, I'm still in. But within the next couple of months, I'm going to transition at least half of my books out of KDP select and then publish them wide. If it goes well, I'll probably transition all of my books out of KDP Select before the end of the year. I can totally see real...

If immigrants represent cheap labor or potential tenants/maintenance workers for your properties, I can see why you'd be in favor of this. It does strike me as ironic, however, that you're complaining of British "bottom-feeders" who -- in their own country -- must now compete with third-world...

    Hurricane Irma

    OFF-TOPIC
Just to show how far-reaching this storm is, I'm in Northern Alabama, and schools are closed today due to a tropical storm warning. Mostly, we're expected to have rain and damaging winds, nothing like the monster-storm conditions those of you in Florida (and elsewhere) were facing. So glad to...

    Hurricane Irma

    OFF-TOPIC
(I always feel funny "liking" posts that contain terrible news or grim predictions. When I hit the "like" button, I feel like I'm saying, "Whoohoo! Bad news." But what I mean to say is, "Thanks for the update" or "Wow, that's really interesting" or "stay safe".) It's nice to see so many people...

    Hurricane Irma

I can see this. A lot of it, I think, depends on the risk by location. Like, if you're on the water and in an area prone to storm-surges, you're foolish to stay. If, however, you have a sturdy home inland, your odds of riding it out safely are much better. At this point, there's a risk no matter...

    Hurricane Irma

The Normalcy Bias, or normality bias, is a mental state people enter when facing a disaster. It causes people to underestimate both the possibility of a disaster and its possible effects, because it causes people to have a bias to believe that things will always function the way things normally...

    Hurricane Irma

    OFF-TOPIC
Thinking of all the people in Florida and obsessing over this... My sister's in a forced evacuation zone and lives right on the water (gulf-side). But is she evacuating? No, in spite of many people (me included) urging her to do so. (I've already annoyed her to no end.) And now, I'm not sure...

Recommended software to write books (MAC)

    BOOKS
I've heard that Scrivener is amazing for the reasons mentioned above by @JustKris . If you're just starting out, you could also just use Microsoft Word (assuming you already have it on your Mac). That's what I use, and I haven't regretted it yet. The hardest part is actually writing the book...

Interesting! I hope you'll keep us posted. I recently somewhere (maybe on the KBoards) that if you have a series of books already written, that instead of releasing them all at once, stagger them so they come out every two weeks or something, because it helps in the Amazon algos. I can't attest...

Excellent! IMO, the hardest part is writing the book. I'll be watching this with interest!

    Friendly Competition

Awwww!!! Thanks so much! If I were running the contest though, I'd probably suggest it be limited to first-time authors or brand-new pen names -- something to inspire newbies to jump in and give self-publishing a go. Those of us with a few books under our belt could cheer them on!

So a customer from Houston placed an order today

    HOT!
I actually had this happen. My mom shipped me something early last October via USPS. According to the tracking number, it was confirmed delivered like Oct. 10th, but we never received it. I went down to the post office and tried to get reimbursed through their shipping insurance. They said...

I agree with others that nothing comes from the government, but rather is taken from your fellow citizens. However...In the big scheme of things, it sounds like you're the kind of guy who, when the numbers are tallied years from now, will have paid in far more to the system than you've ever...
