Self Publishing a Kindle Book & then finding a publisher

    PUBLISHING
Holy Wall of Text, Batman!!! I typed out my answer beforehand, and I seriously can't believe how long it is. But it's complicated, so here it goes. These are my thoughts based on pursuing the traditional route myself and following a ton of writer/agent/editor blogs for years. Here are some...

Hello from Denver - self publishing success

Status Update: My third book just hit #19,634 on the Amazon Kindle store. I know this is very small potatoes compared to established authors, but it's so exciting to see progress. In contrast, my second book peaked somewhere around #46,000 and quickly fell down to oblivion. I realize my latest...

Great examples! It's interesting to see how much more professional and polished the second version is, without all those adverbs. ...I declared, interestingly.

I've noticed categories disappearing too. But they always reappear. I wish I could say why. I'm still figuring out the whole category thing.

Congrats! Please keep us posted on how it goes, and I'll do the same. For all my obsessing over the numbers, I should be encouraged. Book #3 is now on track for double the free downloads as book #2. If that translates to sales, I'll definitely be moving in the right direction. As far as time...

Thanks for the response! They're all on Amazon, exclusive because I did their KDP select program. The lengths are as follows: Book #1: 18,000 words plus illustrations, released late July. $2.99 Book #2: 300 words (but heavy on the illustrations), released early August. $1.25 Book #3: 14,500...

An update, I now have three books out there. I uploaded book 3 within the last week and had just a couple of sales, but those were from family. I'm running another two-day free promo. So far, I've "sold" 400 free books, compared to 300 for the last book in this genre. I don't know if this...

37 titles and millions of dollars. Can you write enough to make it?

I did a quick browse of some of her books. It looks like they're mostly priced at $2.99 each for the Kindle versions. I'm betting that's what she's referring to.

Wow, that's really inspiring! It makes me feel a lot more positive about my results so far. I just hit publish on my third book. So far, I've sold just 20 of my first two combined, so it's nice to know that even these amazingly hot authors also had to start somewhere.

Thanks!!! As it stands now, I'm not sure I could break up the novel without greatly compromising the story, mostly because it's a standalone mystery. But it's definitely worth looking at! I'll have to take a look. Regarding the timeframe, I actually doubt I could do anything with this pen...

I'd love an opinion on something for anyone who wants to chime in... I have a completed, fully edited full-length romantic mystery. Sometimes, I get tempted to publish it now, because it's 90,000 completed words. (This is the novel that netted me a top New York agent a few years ago.) Other...

I agree with Jonleehacker. Anything over 4 bucks makes me hesitate unless the writer has already proven themselves. Maybe they're already a best seller. Or maybe I've read one of their other works and enjoyed it. But a new self published author with minimal reviews? Honestly I'd hesitate on...

To chime in on pricing, I agree we shouldn't underprice our work. But we must also be realistic. The goal is to make the most money and gain the most repeat sales on other works. As for me, I'd rather sell 1,000 books at $2.99 each than four books at $10.00 each. Of course, ideally, it would be...

Oh drat! I just realized I should've clarified something about my book that was less than 1000 words. It's very heavy on original, full-color illustrations. I see now how this probably misled people. It was actually a lot more effort than just the writing. In fact, the writing was the easy...

I don't mind at all! Book 1 = Approximately 18,000 words. Priced at $2.99 Book 2 = Under 1,000 words. Priced at 99 cents. My next book is about 15,000 words. I plan to price it somewhere between $2.99 and $3.99.

I know this is a cliche to say, but you should definitely write what feels natural as you write it. I've seen the first and third combo done quite well, especially in the creepy serial killer type of story. The majority of traditional romances, I believe, are done in third person, so there'd be...

An update: In a little over a week, here's where my first two books stand: Book 1: 7 sales, 4 borrows. (Amazon apparently pays $2 per borrow so that's actually a good thing.) Book 2: 6 sales, 0 borrows. I did a free-book promo for two of those days. Book 1 had about 300 downloads. Book 2 ha...

I'd be interested on any thoughts on this too. It seems from the wisdom shared so generously by Held for Ransom and others that the best use of our time is to write more stories. Still, I'm debating spending a very minor bit of time on the social media stuff too. Maybe the secret is to not let...

I agree with everything you said, except this. Following women's fiction for some years, I've noticed an increasing trend of erotica going mainstream. If you look at the bestseller lists, you'll find more erotica than ever before, and not just Fifty Shades of Gray. Some of these authors are...
