    Working with developers

    WEB/DIGITAL
I can help answer some questions too. I've recently fallen in love with Atlassian - specifically Jira and Confluence. Confluence with Balsamiq to help document what needs to be done and Jira to track specific tasks, bugs, etc through the development process. There are a ton of videos out...

Laid off. Need a new temporary engineering job. How to use linkedin effectively?

don't pay any attention to economic trends. Fewer companies are hiring means that some companies are still hiring. If a company desperately needs an engineer, they will hire one, regardless of what's happening economically. Some businesses even boomed throughout the Great...

Can anyone help me clear this up?

    RANT
the thing is, unless you've competed successfully in this niche before, you don't really know what it will take to succeed. It may be some weird combination of things that you won't figure out until you try a bunch of stuff. A half-hearted attempt at something that you relentlessly improve...

Can anyone help me clear this up?

    RANT
What is it that is stopping you from taking action? For me, it was worrying about what other people would think of the decisions I made. Crazy, I know, but that's what it was for me. The more that I don't let other people's options *drive* me, the more productive I am. (I still take other...

Turning Away Customers who Can't Afford Your Prices

    NOTABLE!
Time to hire (or contract with) someone that can do what you do. If you hire overseas, you can keep 50-80 percent of your revenue. Finding good people is a pain, but its worth it. Its also then possible to lower your rates for some clients by a little bit, and still come out far ahead of...

10+ Years IT Contracting at €300-900/day (Learnings)

    HOT!
Great points. I'm curious what actual things you say that gives your customers confidence in your ability? Here are some of my thoughts: 1) this is where it really helps to have a varied business background - makes you able to relate to a lot of different business issues. 2) I'll mention a...

10+ Years IT Contracting at €300-900/day (Learnings)

    HOT!
yeah this is a hard one. speaking from my own experience only, here are my thoughts, in no special order 1) You have to have some sort of technical ability in order to be able to talk the language as a sales rep ... if you can set up a computer, you can learn what you need to know on the job...

The ceiling is real, even with 'mini leverage' – slowlane is almost always slow

    SLOWLANE
what is your slowlane business? maybe we could brainstorm ideas for turning it into a fastlane one... I was doing freelance programming a year ago. Now, I have a number of contractors overseas, and two sales reps that are helping me sell our services. wondering if you could do something...

    Control of company?

    PEOPLE
exactly...I'm quite done with bosses. Even really good ones. I'd rather have customers. I recently said 'no bid' to a potential customer. He started pursuing us a bit because of that. Still stuck to my guns ... this guy would have been a nightmare client. Felt great.

    Control of company?

    PEOPLE
People have done this kind of thing and made a killing on it. I think its more of a personal decision. For me, I would much rather be making $1M/year and own my company than be making $10M/year and not be in control. For two reasons: 1) I like to be in control and 2) I like the learning...

Outsourcing My App, How Do I Make Sure Everything is Done Correctly?

    SOURCING WEB/DIGITAL
you definitely need to sign a contract. Here's a weird thing about copyright law: if you pay someone to write software for you, THEY own the software. You just have a license to use it. You have to sign a contract that says that the developer assigns all rights to the software to you. I...

Outsourcing My App, How Do I Make Sure Everything is Done Correctly?

bug fixing is a developer-only task. usually best left to the original developer that wrote the thing

Why did my first product video get me 53 sales?

    MARKETING
Its immediately funny. That first shot, with the crappy-graphics 'it levitates,' and then the weird sound in the background that makes you curious about what's coming next. It makes it look like its going to be an entertaining video. You then go straight into showing off all the features that...

Outsourcing My App, How Do I Make Sure Everything is Done Correctly?

    SOURCING WEB/DIGITAL
    1) this depends on the developer. Mine is most proficient in Android and would outsource for IOS. Depending on the type of app you're writing, though, a better alternative might be to write it in something that can be easily moved between ios and android. 2) you'll need to keep retesting the...

    Contracting Developers...Nightmarish Lack of Control

    PEOPLE
My company writes custom business software and we hire people overseas. I happen to have a very reliable sales rep in Pakistan and we hire developers local to him, so my experience is unique. In addition to what people have mentioned above, I would: 1) write very detailed requirements - mock...

Get More Sales. Features vs Benefits- Knowing the Difference.

    MARKETING
so true. When my wife was first pregnant, she'd used the cheap 99 cent store tests. We went and bought a $10 test (which probably was manufactured by the same people, and was just as accuracte) just to make sure.

Get More Sales. Features vs Benefits- Knowing the Difference.

    MARKETING
True...but who are you selling it to? End users? Soda companies? That list of benefits is very focused on what the manufacturer of that can would think, and not about the needs of the soda company, etc. Benefits need to be tailored to the audience.

Get More Sales. Features vs Benefits- Knowing the Difference.

    MARKETING
I'm not convinced that Benefits that are focused on what the can manufacturer cares about are where its at, either. How are you going to meet my needs is what I care about as a consumer. So...for a can of soda, I don't value the fact that the soda can fits nicely in my hand. I care about...
