How to Build and Grow a Newsletter as a Business Model

    GOLD! HOT! PUBLISHING
Haven't been on this forum in a while, but I just wanted to say that since I last posted in this thread, I started a Substack newsletter and it's grown from 100 to 500 subscribers in the past month! This is really exciting for me, since being a writer has always been my dream. It's been so...

Leaning into rejection: Asking for free coffee.

    HOT! MINDSET
My mother asks for discounts on everything, everywhere haha. Even if she already has a coupon she'll ask for more on top of that. I used to cringe as a child and pretend I wasn't related to her, but now I admire her bravery. And more often than not, she actually gets the discount.

How to Build and Grow a Newsletter as a Business Model

    GOLD! HOT! PUBLISHING
I also held myself back for a long time thinking that I should build my own website, until one day my boyfriend was like why don't you just START and then figure out the rest later? So I started my newsletter on Substack; most of my subscribers so far are people I know or people who know people...

Value skew: What discernible difference ultimately turned you into a buyer or x-buyer?

    GOLD! HOT! MARKETING
One example of a positive value skew is the jewelry company Mene. One day my dad and I were discussing how much we disliked 14k and 18k gold, which is what you’ll mainly find in jewelry stores, even super expensive, high-end ones. I looked up “24k gold jewelry” online and found Mene, which at...

How To Become Articulate In Writing and Presenting Ideas

    QUESTION
I spent most of my time reading as a kid, so writing became quite intuitive, though I had to consciously strive to improve myself by learning from my favorite writers. A piece of advice that might sound strange is to translate ancient authors.

In the middle of writing my first and have outlines and research done for a few others. Still need to finish the website.

How to Build and Grow a Newsletter as a Business Model

    GOLD! HOT! PUBLISHING
I got a website because I didn’t want to use Substack or any of the other things and have been working on designing it. I also have a few ideas for things to write about, so I just have to sit down and write them. I’ve been working on building an audience through Tumblr because I’ve found more...

How to Build and Grow a Newsletter as a Business Model

    GOLD! HOT! PUBLISHING
I used to write a column for my college newspaper and had quite a few people who sent me emails on articles I’d written, so I’ve been thinking of starting a newsletter for a while, and this was really encouraging! Thank you for the great information :)

How do you handle your hobbies?

    MINDSET
Maybe just limit yourself to 5 or 10 minutes a day and force yourself to stop after that or find a small thing you can complete within that space of time. Then you don't lose your skills completely, even if you might be moving at a slower pace.

    Fastlane Opportunities for Writers

    HOT! IDEA
Some experiments in sonnet-writing: The first one I tried was Shakespeare. The description I gave it was "This is a sonnet in the style of Shakespeare; it is 14 lines and has a rhyme scheme of ABAB CDCD EFEF GG." I gave it the first line of Sonnet 60 to see how similar or different it would...

I started with long-form and didn't input any tone of voice, but "friendly expert" might be what I'm going for—thanks for the suggestion! The style it's been giving me has been mostly fine so far, though; it's mostly the facts that have been giving me issues. Yeah, I think I just didn't give it...

    Fastlane Opportunities for Writers

    HOT! IDEA
I just bought a month's subscription last night in order to write some articles, but it didn't help too much because the articles are really fact-based, so I still have to do the research and put everything into my own words. Astoundingly, it's able to generate facts that sound completely legit...

A lot of contemporary art is already kind of defined that way—look at Maurizio Cattelan's $120k banana, for example.

Actually there's Rupi Kaur, whose net worth is about a million, just from selling her poetry books/doing readings. But it's only because her poetry is really, really, really terrible, so bad that it became a huge meme. Most other poets, even poets who have won the Nobel Prize like Louise Glück...

I've Read The Great Rat-Race Escape!

    GOLD! HOT!
Just finished the book—I thought it was wonderful! I expected it to just rehash everything from the previous books, but I actually ended up getting a lot out of it, and the way concepts were put into strategies and principles was organized & helpful. What really resonated with me from this book...

How is dating affecting your business journey?

    PEOPLE
I became kind of like this in my last relationship, but it was long-distance, and we didn't see each other for months because of the pandemic. Also, I found out he had cheated on me; he apologized and begged me to stay with him, I decided to give him a second chance, and then he didn't put the...

I'm not sure how relevant this is, but this thread reminded me of my favorite example of a successful businessman-writer—Shakespeare! He owned a 12.5-7% stake in his theater company, sold grain, made multiple investments, and bought several properties he was able to rent out. When he came to...

    Reading books

    MINDSET
Nowadays I rely largely on digital books, so I highlight in them, take notes, and screenshot important passages, and then I review my notes from time to time.

Gen Z & Future Novels, Fiction, Music, Story Telling.

I'm Gen Z, but I don't think I'm entirely representative, as I studied literature in college and have been an avid reader almost my whole life. I prefer physical books but lately I've been using digital books a lot more, since I like highlighting important passages and annotating but hate to...

Here's a good analysis of how Goodreads works, if you're interested, though it focuses primarily on "classic" books.
