The last week of trading looks like a thousand different "flash crashes", and we even got one to the upside yesterday right before the close.

With all of the "high frequency" trading going on, where computers are making millions of decisions to trade per day -- is the market completely screwed for mainstream investors who want to buy and hold companies based on good fundamentals, earnings, cash, debt, etc...

Please discuss...

Wall Street has always favored the big players. These seesaws, flash crashes have made a small group of people lots of money but that group is not from main street. As a main street trader or investor, you can't move markets to your favor, you don't get INSIDERS tips. That's why the stock market is a like gambling and a poor investment mechanism for main street. Unless you're playing with the big guys, don't invest anymore than 10% of your money in the stock markets.

It gives us all someone/thing to blame for making bad trades. ;)

Blamers are losers; and it's just a letter in-between blame and lame. Blamers eventually become lame. Never find a reason to blame. Because even after apportioning blame, whose money is lost?

Here's a great article from Mark Cuban on what Wall Street really is. Thought it would be very relevant to this thread.
What Business is Wall Street in ? « blog maverick

One thing that is constant and guaranteed in the markets is CHANGE nad nothing else. There are sharks, dangerous ones in the ocean of the markets. You need skills that are regularly updated to pull profits out.
