Recently, my business partner has encouraged me to begin to use Twitter and LinkedIn to make connections (angel investors, high value individuals, journalists, etc).

As someone in my early 20s with a limited network in the start up world:

Do you think it's smart to build up a strong Twitter & LinkedIn profile (whilst engaging with others online) to build up your network?

How do/did you create your high value network?

(Not a fan of your typical cocktail networking events, but I want to build a high value network of individuals in more effective ways).

IMO having a big network just on Linkedin/Twitter without connecting "offline" is basically the same thing as having a lot of Facebook friends. 99% of those connections won't be valuable.

You have to meet people in real life to build real connections.

Linkedin/Twitter can be a first step to identify possible connections and set up meetings.

Be sure you have something to offer though. People who are worth having as a connection are busy. The typical "networkers" you meet at "networking events" are usually worthless.

Check out "How to win friends and influence people".

@Kak has some great posts about building a network by finding common ground in non-business activities like charity, politics, hobbies etc.
