A few months ago I saw an email in my inbox.

The subject line was something like "7 ways to build trust for your business". (Sorry, it was probably more like "7 Ways To Build Trust For Your Business".)


I sat back and looked at that subject line for a while.


Really?

Do I really need to know 7 ways to build trust for my business?

Businesses are made up of people.

Do I really need to learn how to make people trust me?

Do I have to learn 7 ways to do that, or did I learn what I needed before I'd turned 7?


I deleted the email without opening it, then wondered about the fear and inadequacy that subject line was trying to create in me.

Until I saw that subject line I didn't know I didn't know 7 ways to make businesses trust me!

I was happily ignorant of this deficiency of mine.

I was moving forward, not worrying about something I wasn't even aware of.



Protect yourself from those that would have you believe you need to learn more before you start.

You can read "how to start a business" books all day long. But if you don't get off your a$$ and make those mistakes for yourself, then you will never go anywhere.

I've been thinking about why I didn't start my entrepreneurial journey much earlier. (I'm 42). I should have. Would I have created the same company back then that I did now? No. I wouldn't have known nearly enough to do the kind of work I do now. BUT. I would have been able to make something appropriate for the amount of knowledge I had back then. The trick would have been being humble and self-aware enough to know what that was. If I had, I would be much further along than I am now.

I've often heard people in here tell young people to just go work for someone for a bit. That's decent advice, but as long as you have enough money coming in from a job to cover your basic expenses, why not start building an actual business on the side using the current set of assets you posses, too.

that's what infomercials entrepreneurs are rich : they sell the same stuff over and over to would be entrepreneur.

Frank Kern and Dan Pena can't really understand why people behave like that.

I think you can always know more, have more strategies in your toolbox or methods or ideas. Those 7 methods from the email may have been a gamechanger for somebody, probably not though.

But information without action is useless. I think that's important to remember, and something I constantly struggle with. Cheers Andy

So instead of educating myself through books all day it is better to use the knowledge from one book and educate myself through my actions and most likely my failures? That would mean one does not learn from failures from others without implementing the lessons learned into one's actions?

I am probably better than most people skill wise but I still have this inferiority complex that I don't know enough.

I am like, will I be able to solve my customers problem? Or do i have to read 10 books and watch 1000 videos before I can?

Will i be able to quadruple his companies sales for $100? I know that seems like a joke but $100 is what I felt my time is worth when i started months ago. Still trying to get out this limiting belief.

I think by the time I become a millionaire I will have rock solid inner game. Its in your belief where money is.

@Andy Black - Wow! Thank you for this! I had a plan to read all these books this year. I am now changing that plan to taking all these actions this year, and I kept coming across how failure was how you learn, I kept hearing this, I even thought to myself how can I find a way to fail. After your thread and Tony's video, it seems so clear now, I can see all kinds of things I can take action on.

What about this email pitch last night?​

I'd stop using 5+ channels to communicate with people.

I'd stop consuming for once.

Consuming on all levels.

I'd go and produce the sh*t out of my life everyday.

No more looking and searching.

More doing.

Great thread, so true. Just stumbled upon this now whilst trawling through the forums for advice on pivoting my digital marketing strategy. I don’t think I’ve contributed anything of value to this forum so far, so thought I’d share this titbit.

I had an experience just this week (in my slow lane job) which is a testament to already knowing enough. (Background: I work as a project manager for a medical communications agency).

Our client wanted us to hold a virtual workshop for their internal team to gain consensus on some company-wide guidance. You’d think coming to a communications agency, she would be able to leverage knowledge from a wide group of individuals who have done this a million times before. Nope!

Due to being (chronically) under-resourced, and the fact I used to be a teacher, the project ended up falling on my plate entirely. I’d never done this before but pretty much got stuck in with the agenda/activities/interactive tools/platforms/logistics/facilitating etc. The workshop was this Thursday. Everything was planned, but nothing went to plan. I think we pivoted from the plan within 5 minutes of the meeting beginning.

A few people had technical issues getting onto the platform, the activities were interactive and 10-15 minutes long which meant people who were having issues were not really attended to, and trying to manage 6 breakout rooms as well as the main meeting with 3 people was INTENSE.

At the end of the meeting, I definitely had a knot in my stomach and anticipated an extremely disappointed client who was frustrated with the meeting that she paid over £15,000 for.

Strangely she seemed fairly happy with the outcome?! (Note: She is a tough client; we would definitely have heard if she HATED it).
Client - “I think the workshop went well! A few people had technical issues whilst joining but we had some really good discussions. Maybe there could have been a little more energy, but thanks guys for a great workshop”

A few key learnings:

1. You will always think something went worse than it did because you are comparing it to the gold standard you have imagined it to be. Other people can’t see that gold standard. Other people don’t know what it ”should have been”. In my opinion, this activity was a classic example of feeling under-qualified for the job and worrying that you will not have the expertise to meet the expectations of your client, then realising they aren’t judging it like you are.

2. “But I can’t compete against a larger company with all of that experience!”. It’s about perception. Larger companies are just made of people like you and I who are fumbling together meetings or projects just like this one. If you still have a slow lane job alongside working towards getting on the Fastlane, how many times has something been dumped on your plate and you have just been asked to roll with it? If you make your online presence appear to be larger than just yourself, what is the difference between you and those other companies?

3. If I flagged that I wasn’t qualified and couldn’t do it, then I wouldn’t have learnt the many small tweaks which will make the next workshop 20x better

Next time, that £15,000 will be in my pocket.


TLDR: YOU ALREADY KNOW ENOUGH

So, Andy, you wrote this 4 years ago. Do you still feel the same way? I work a lot and I keep educating myself as I go. But, I too find that a lot of the self-help industry is filled with people who either haven't done themselves or they are regurgitating the same old stuff. I've gotten to the point where I usually listen to audiobooks rather than taking the time to read them these days. But, every once in awhile, I do find a gem or two.
I've been exploring neuroscience and psychology. It's amazing how the brain works with the human body...

It’s not about not learning. I spent last night (Saturday evening) watching a Udemy course I bought. During the week I’ve listened to two podcasts and watched countless YouTube videos on certain subjects. I’ve immersed myself in a few subjects I want to get better at this month. I’m a lifelong learner.

The point of the post was that you already know enough to get started. It was to tell folks to get in motion now - by helping someone and not by enrolling in a course.

It was also a warning that there are those out there who will try to make you feel you don’t know enough, so they can sell you something.

It was also a plea for people to not have goals to “learn digital marketing”, but to “help people with digital marketing” instead.

I like learning. I like taking action and learning from the results (or lack of). I’m a fan of constant learning by doing, and just-in-time learning.

I believe that knowledge is guide to take action. But when you acquire that knowledge without taking action, the knowledge acquired profits you nothing and becomes useless. And that is what most people do at school; they keep acquiring knowledge but not using it. Use it.

Taking action without knowledge increases your risks of failure. Knowledge gives you clarity and vision. If you know better, you can always do better. Acquiring knowledge first and then taking action, is the ultimate way to increase your speed of success.

For example, you acquire knowledge about how to drive before, getting on the wheel to drive. You study surgical operations before you first start operating on someone. Knowledge enables to learn from your mistakes faster and self-correct.. or else you keep making the same mistakes over and over and over.

But the problem comes when most people acquire tons of knowledge without taking action. Thanks.

Andy, I totally agree. I cried for the first 3 months when I started selling real estate. At that time, there was no training available. People were mean and I didn't know how to sell. I was a shy, young kid. I was scared to talk to people because I didn't know what to say. I learned and became very successful by doing it every day. I also educated myself on the "how-to" part through a self-imposed learning program. 44+ years later, I'm still learning and improving. My husband always asked me, "Do you have to talk to everyone?" Yes, I do. They might say something important.

Andy, I totally agree. I cried for the first 3 months when I started selling real estate. At that time, there was no training available. People were mean and I didn't know how to sell. I was a shy, young kid. I was scared to talk to people because I didn't know what to say. I learned and became very successful by doing it every day. I also educated myself on the "how-to" part through a self-imposed learning program. 44+ years later, I'm still learning and improving. My husband always asked me, "Do you have to talk to everyone?" Yes, I do. They might say something important.
