Define "high traffic"? Whats the intended purpose of the site? WP + effective use of a content delivery network can get you pretty far if you are just publishing content out for consumption.

High traffic, like news site, for example digg.com, newsvine.com, upworthy.com

Bam.

Use a reliable web host (iPage and Bluehost are good), Wordpress, W3 Total Cache and MaxCDN. This can do almost anything, from blogs to e-commerce.

If you're publishing a proprietary web application then Wordpress might not be for you. But for the 99% of us who just use websites to sell, then Wordpress is solid.

You won't find anything that compares Wordpress to php because they aren't the same types of things (it's like comparing apples and oranges).

You are right, Wordpress is an open-source CMS (content management system) that USES php, which is a scripting (programming) language. The reason that php is special is because (for website design) the functions are performed "server side" (on the server where your website is hosted). An example of this is doing a search on a website for a type or category of products. Using php, the website's server will perform the necessary operation, as needed, to show all of those products to the website's user, but there is no set web page, per se, that always shows those products.

Wordpress just provides an easy way to people to use this capability (which ideally provides for a more efficient and faster browsing experience). You won't go wrong with as a tool for getting started.

(Edit: there are other open-source CMS solutions, but Wordpress is the most popular and easiest to use - imo - and you'll find a lot of free resources for it, too)

Facebook runs on PHP, so it can definitely handle lots of traffic. While there is some difference in speed between programming languages and frameworks, it shouldn't be your primary concern if you're just getting started. Whatever language/CMS you know best and can get the best support for is far more important than a small difference in speed - in general it's cheaper to get a faster server than to pay for developers with more esoteric knowledge and skillsets.
