I was thinking about Kevin Kelly's The Inevitable earlier and I started thinking about potential futurology knowledge resources, more specifically what to Google. I assumed that Elon Musk probably has his version of the Fastlane Forum (or maybe he follows this one!). Any idea what he or other tech giants read to keep their hands on the pulse of where the technology industry is heading?

Here are some important things to know about Elon:
  • Elon grew up before the internet. He was always curious about everything and read nonstop. His local library even ran out of books for him for to read.
  • Not only did he grow up in a time when technology wasn't freely and easily available like it is now, but he grew up in South Africa which was a dangerous, violent place where only the strong survive.
  • He had a generally shitty upbringing where he faced violence from classmates, and apparent abuse from his father. He got lost in his pursuit on knowledge as an escape.
  • He's a ridiculously driven individual who's mind is always looking for solutions. If you look at his past it's not surprising he became who he is today.
Elon never had a place where you are suddenly just rewarded with information. He had to seek out everything. Unlike today where you have mega-corporations telling you what to think about any curiosity you have (Google, Facebook).

Because of this, he's networked with people who run these industries, and it's not difficult for him to be kept in the look at all times.

This is true. He read 2 books a day when he was younger and is now surrounded by world class talent.

Really I was trying to say "if he didn't have his network, where would he look for quality futurology articles?"

He wouldn't.

This is what I'm saying. Elon doesn't consume information the way most people do.

When he was young, he used to read tons of science fiction novels. Some of his favourites were The Moon Is A Harsh Mistress, and Hitcher's Guide To The Galaxy. He also had an extreme interest in science. The first time he saw a computer, he felt it would change the world, while his father dismissed it as basically just a toy.

He knew so much about what he as interested in that he predicted what was going to happen.

Articles are written by people who have already done the research and condensed it in a way people can quickly understand. Today they're written to be as consumable as possible. SO the people who read articles are getting the information secondary

Elon wouldn't spend his time just googling articles for quick info.

Generally you read science news stories / youtube channels. And also a broad understanding of science in general. Wait but why is good. Gizmodo. Engadget. New scientist. etc.

Just be a curious person, be interested in science and technology, that's about it..
