So my curiosity got the best of me to test this and I threw a bottle of Purell on eBay knowing full well it would end up being removed. I did an auction starting at $3.97 with free shipping meaning I potentially lose money which I was perfectly fine with as one outcome. After a day it was up to $26.00 with 14 watchers making me think it would’ve gotten closer to $50 or more at the end had it not been removed. Which was for the best anyway because my wife is a germaphobe on a good day.

This is PERFECT proof of the ACTUAL market price. MTEE didn't even mark the product up and the bidders still showed what the market price of Purell is.

On another note... Ebay shutting off sales of supplies is an even more misplaced policy than price gouging laws. It makes finding the market price that much harder for people that need these items.

Folks, keep this thread LIMITED to CV discussion.

I don't want this to turn into a topic/debate about guns, price gouging economics, or any other of these side topics, most of which are of political nature. If the conversation continues to deviate there, you are wasting your time as I will likely just remove your post. Thanks.

Came across this randomly today, sounds scary: The neuroinvasive potential of SARS‐CoV2

In short, it sounds like they are theorizing that this disease may be neuro-invasive, meaning (if I understand this correctly), the virus can invade your central nervous system and hang around even well after you've "recovered" from the virus.

I wish I understood the implications of this a bit better to stay objective about this. Comments online (which I can't verify and are not my own), seem to say that this could mean a number of things:

- The virus may have the potential to hang out for extended periods of time and "flare up" after dormant periods, (think herpes)
- Be extremely hard to manage through drugs, as there are very few anti-virals that focus on the central nervous system
- Allow people to be infectious even after recovering
- Result in longer term neurological effects (I believe one coronavirus subject suffered eye twitching after recovery?)
- Seriously interfere with folks already suffering from neurological conditions

I'd be very interested to hear more about this as it develops. Everything I just said could be 100% false or misleading. I'm just sharing as a data point as I haven't seen it mentioned here yet (sorry if it has - I've been trying to stay up to date but this thread is a rolling thunder of non-stop information).

No problem, but it's a political topic that could spiral into a 20 page tangent. Just want to keep the thread on point.

I agree it could spiral and that would be stupid. But...

Price gouging is about as apolitical of a political argument as I have ever seen. It is pinning legitimate economic pressures of supply and demand against emotions.

It is not like I am attacking the left from the right. Ken Paxton says he is a "staunch conservative."

OK I'll stop.

True, but the average Joe doesn't look at it like that way. Just like the average Joe didn't think it was prudent to PREP 4 weeks ago when all of us here prepared.

It's a government intervention argument (LEFT) vs a free-market argument (RIGHT) -- so ultimately it is political.

BEST post of the thread. Thank you for making my week @Vigilante .

Too many people out there will take this crisis and incorporate it into their story of why they couldn't succeed.

I doubt Newton was sitting around waiting for the updates of what was going on out in the world. He took control of what he could and changed the world forever because of his laser beam focus.

I wouldn't be so quick to buy at this point, there is still some way to go.
This virus if anything may expose how weak and interdependent the U.S economy really is.
I get the sense that there is a lot of cashing in selling/buying by algos at this point, rigged game basically.
Absolutely NOT all in with buying. Since it's impossible to predict the market, I use a buy a little at a time strategy. Not dollar cost averaging, but buying into dips over the long term.

This is your thread reminder to take a break from this thread, social media, and the news.

Its easy to get worked up and lose control of your thoughts when all you do is feed your mind this information.

Go read a book, play with your pets, hangout with your family, FaceTime old friends, work on an idea.

This will all come to pass

Pasted the following from recent announcement here in Jacksonville, FL:
------------------------
In response, Curry announced the following:

  • Alcohol sales are banned from midnight to 8 a.m. in Jacksonville at restaurants and bars until further notice.
  • Effectively at 5 p.m. Monday, March 16 in Duval County, any place or business that can legally host a large gathering cannot hold more than 50 people inside the establishment. The only exception to these limits are grocery stores.
  • Churches urged to have online services.

Trudeau just announced that Canada is shutting our borders and for all Canadians to get home now 'while they still can'. Airports will be denying symptomatic passengers from boarding.

Exceptions exist - Americans are still allowed in for now. I suspect this is likely because of how difficult this would be in practice given our trade relations. We'll see if this changes.

If possible, try to avoid using cash guys. Cash is very dirty and a hotbed for germs. This puppy can live up to 3-4 days on surfaces and that 'change of a 20' you just put in your pocket may have been touched by 4 people today alone. If you think about how often money changes hands, it’s just better to use your debit. If you HAVE to use cash, try to give exact change, so you minimize amount of paper you put in your hands.

People who normally buy 1 week of toilet paper who bought 3 weeks worth last week weren’t greedy or panicked, they were smart. People who mocked them then are fighting in Costco parking lots now.
And people like to cite “greed” when other people's smart actions thwart their own plans to do the exact same thing they're criticizing others for. "You bought 3 bags of toilet paper? How dare you. Now I can't buy 3 bags of toilet paper. Can you believe the greed of that guy??"

Now, let’s take that even one step further. Let’s send the profits through the supply chain instead of lining an enterprising hobo’s pockets with black market profit. What happens then? Walmart charges customers a little more. Tide charges Walmart a little more. Tide can seriously ramp up production. The market price eventually recovers A LOT FASTER because the shortage will be satisfied faster.

Everyone who is pissed off that there is a shortage of affordable consumables can thank their socialistic state governments for moving the entire market for these goods to the black market.
Bingo. This incentivizes Tide to produce more of the products that in high demand and deters people from hoarding more than they need.

Economists are almost unanimous on this. When asked to agree or disagree with the statement: “in a severe weather event emergency, no person within the chain of distribution of consumer goods and services shall sell or offer to sell consumer goods or services for a price that is unconscionably excessive.” only 8% of economists agreed or strongly agreed. 51% of economists disagreed or strongly disagreed.

Although I was really impressed with the local ShopRite's handling of the situation. They actually made all disinfectant products 50% off but limited 4 per customer. I thought that was admirable. But businesses should have the choice of if they want to partake in that type of generosity and helping of their community.

In the press conference (now ongoing) Trump said this could last until July and August, as a BEST CASE. As he uttered it, the markets dropped another 3 handles. Markets now in freefall...

He also told his young son, "this is bad" -- these are some concerning statements from someone who generally, likes to sugarcoat reality.

If he wasn't symptomatic, how did he test positive? It's not like you can go to Walgreens and buy a test. He indicated he was in contact with someone who had it, but I thought that wasn't enough.

If nothing else it fuels the fire of speculation that the tests are being administered on a status basis whether true or not.

I imagine it varies by state and individual Doctor. Plus he could have an underlying condition that the public just doesn’t know about.

Anecdotal but my sister in law in Mass. was at urgent care yesterday with symptoms but not tested because she is not in a risk category.

The CDC has opened up testing to anyone that a doctor approves. So, if you have come into contact with someone with the virus, I could easily see a doctor approving that.

One thing that's weird with testing is that not all the testing that's being done is being reported. Here in Seattle, the University of Washington is running 4000 tests per day. This is from a doctor that came by our house to test our daughter. She hand-carries each test swab into UW's lab every night and is in close contact with a number of people there. The good news from UW is that only 5% (as of last Friday) of the tests that they're doing are positive.

I dunno, I personally like the idea. I mean market economics are literally the backbone of the fast lane philosophy. I think people have proven that on this forum they're capable of civil political discussion, and if it were to go off the rails then it could be dealt with after that. But given what I've seen here I think it's unlikely to go off the rails. People here in the past have been pretty open-minded and civilized.

I believe Magic Johnson found out he was HIV+ because of a test required by his insurance company, I expect there was a similar reason for Elba. It might have been required by a production company considering him for a $100M-$200M movie.
