Fellow fastlaners,

In TMF, MJ discusses the Trinity of Wealth which is formed of freedom, health, and relationships, which together create happiness for us. And while TMF is great at addressing the Freedom bit through Fastlane entrepreneurship, I was wondering what other impactful writers, books, podcasts, blogs, or resources you know of which address the other two - health, and relationships? I find that the other two are closely related to our entrepreneurial pursuits, and even to our own productivity. I was discussing with @biophase in a different thread, and found it very interesting when he mentioned that when he put his business's profits ahead of his happiness, he saw his business actually decline.

I myself also sometimes suffer from this... I have the tendency to work on satisfying my market and taking care of business almost nonstop. It's not all the time high-intensity (or draining), but I'm almost always doing something that will move my business forward. So I would be interested to discuss the aspects of how health & relationships relate to freedom, and how they can help or hinder us in our entrepreneurial journey AND what are the most important distinctions in these areas. TMF is great at setting the distinctions when it comes to entrepreneurship & freedom - but I feel more is left to be said about health & relationship, and I was wondering what worked for you, what do you find useful, and generally what your thoughts are?

Looking forward to a fruitful discussion!

Hi @Black_Dragon43, Happy Thanksgiving! I'm a bit confused what you actually want to talk about? Are you asking whether or not health and relationships are important or are you asking about what health and relationships mean to us?

I don't quite remember where, but several books have mentioned the business, health, and relationship trinity. In one form or another. And I think some books have added onto this trinity. I think I've seen an addition of spirituality or religion, added to the mix?

I believe that it's important to keep this trinity balanced. It's going to be difficult for me to have a good business when my health and relationships are suffering. I try to keep my health as a priority because if I can keep my health then I'm still able to form and work on relationships and business.

Relationships can be business related but they can also mean family. It's important that things at home are going well.

I don't think I can add much to this as I don't really understand your thread question but I hope it contributes a bit.

Hi @Ocean Man ! Happy Thanksgiving and thanks for your reply. I agree with you, I have found that balance is critical. What I'm trying to do with this thread really is to get some perspective on how other fastlaners are tackling HEALTH/FITNESS, and RELATIONSHIPS.

For FREEDOM - we do that through fastlane entrepreneurship, with the framework that MJ laid out in TMF.

But it's not so clear what the top resources would be for the other two sides of the wealth trinity.

Hence my question :)

I was wondering what other impactful writers, books, podcasts, blogs, or resources you know of which address the other two - health, and relationships?

Sorry if I was a bit all over the place and unclear before!

So I would be interested to discuss the aspects of how health & relationships relate to freedom, and how they can help or hinder us in our entrepreneurial journey AND what are the most important distinctions in these areas.
I think this begins with some long term thinking. This is coming from the place where your business is already doing well and you are just running it and growing it day to day. If you are making $30k a year, this probably won't apply to you because you are still in grind and growth mode. But once you get to $100k-$200k, you begin to think about other things.

This is because going from $200k to $250k doesn't change your life. The grind is still there but the rewards, even though they are +$50k year doesn't mean the same as when you went from $30k to $80k a year.

So you can't just go chugging along at $250k, $350k, $500k, $600k... because the work gets harder and harder and the rewards diminish (as a percentage of your net worth). This leaves you feeling empty even though you are accomplishing things. I may be totally off, but I'm guessing that a billionaire who works his a$$ off for 1 year to make $10M won't feel any monetary satisfaction at all.

So you need long term goals, or non-monetary goals. Everyone wants freedom, but many decisions that they make do not work towards that goal. If I want to travel the world, I need to create that freedom. So when an opportunity comes along to expand my business, I have to weigh the travel vs. rewards and future freedom.

I also think that as we get older, it's easier to think long term. I remember when I was in my 20's that I didn't even think about my 30's. But now in my 40's, it's easy for me to have a 5 year goal, or my business to have one. Younger people want stuff right now. 5 years in the future is like 20 to them.

In 2011 I was making around $50k a year drop shipping. I was really free and could do whatever I wanted, within my budget. I made the decision to rent a warehouse, hire an employee, import from China. I knew that my freedom would take a hit. But 2 years later, business was doing well and I was free again, but now I was free AND I had more money to travel. So I sacrificed freedom for 2 years to grow my business. You must understand this going in. How long will your sacrifice be. There should always be a light at the end of the tunnel.

I also make purchase goals as rewards. This helps me stay sane and motivated. I had a goal stated one year, which I hit, so I bought a Ferrari. Then it was an R8, then Mclaren. None of these purchases were great financial decisions, but I needed them to reward myself.

Hmm...

From my experience. And the experience of others surrounding me... I'll be frank.

My list now goes like this:

1. Relationships
2. Health
3. Freedom (if possible to attain in this world)....

I was wondering what other impactful writers, books, podcasts, blogs, or resources you know of which address the other two - health, and relationships?

1. Relationships - well I only can advise therapy. Of course only for people who want it. You won't cure yourself from any illness if you don't believe in the medicine. But therapy cures the most important relationship - you with yourself. You will find plenty info everywhere but no amount of reading about it will work. It's like business. You can't read about it and say you now know how to do business. Or sex. You won't learn from a book how it is to have sex with a woman / man... You have to do it.

2. Health - this ties into the above but - Gabor Mate and his "When the Body Says No" is brilliant. It only shows a part of the whole picture but clearly we rely too much on pharma, and too little on everything else. This also ties into relationships. Other would be "Feeding Your Demons" by Tsultrim Allione. The second book might be a bit too... hmm...

3. Freedom - I know you weren't asking ... but ...

Man.

I remember how I felt after reading TMF. Before the book, I felt that there was something off. I couldn't pinpoint why. I could just feel it.

I felt that tension and uneasiness. Then I read the book. No only did MJ put in word that concept that was eluding me. But he went beyond. Explaining things that was far beyond what I could sense.

The 3 months after I read the book were brutal. 3 months of cognetive dissonance and tension. I went through so many emotions, it is not even funny.

And after that I went full in, crazy in. First in action faking. Then eventually to something much more sustainable.

And through the process, I discovered that am not a pure "entrepreneur" . The idea of grinding day and night, is not for me. I been there. I lost some friends. Some relationships ended.

But one day somehow I decided to face it. And when I realised what am looking for, the journey completely changed.

I lean toward what Biophase said. It starts with self awareness, and thinking through what you really want. Being frank and ok with who you are.

It took Kobe Bryant's death for me to be real honest. And realize that I want to find meaning and fulfilment now, not later.

Now I have health, relationships and intellectual adventures at the top.

In terms of resources, @Black_Dragon43 you know the stoics are up there, any of the three but probably Seneca more than the other big two.

Two thinkers I follow are Nassim Taleb and Naval Ravikant. Farnam Street blog is also amazing. Very high signal to noise ratio.

Health wise, I listen to The Model Health Show and to Rhonda Patrick.

Nir Eyal has some good stuffs. The Behavioral scientist site too is very good.

Freeletics and the Movement Parallels Life YouTube channel are keeping me in very good shape.

Long post that boils down to this: be honest with yourself and go after things you value. Now. Not tomorrow, because who knows. You could leave life right now.
