Hey guys. Rawr made an interesting entry in a thread by lleone's thread and instead of hijacking that for this, I though I'd start a new thread.

After Rawr's post, I was curious who the throwaway_writer was, so I googled him/her. One of the first entries on Google was this:

http://traceywritesbooks.com/the-throwaway-writer-method-of-making-1000-a-day-writing/

And this link is gold too:

http://www.reddit.com/r/writing/comments/m2ejo/broke_1000_in_one_day_for_the_first_time/

Nice share, thanks. Looks like its from 2 years ago. I would say those were the days of the WF crowd spamming the hell out of Amazon with their quick crappy books.

But from what I understand now, Amazon has tightened up their quality control.

"I think the biggest realization was that most self-published work was just really bad. Horrible. Awful.

So as long as mine wasn't horrific it would sell. Was a big confidence booster."

If you scroll to the bottom of Tracey's post and read the comments, it looks like she published about 20 books and then gave up on it due to lack of sales.

I would think if she had 20 titles out there and followed all of the criteria listed (cover, title, desc, etc) that she would have had enough sales to not get discouraged.

As someone who did this in 2012 (making 1k/month), it's much harder to start doing in 2014.

@AubreyRose

If you were starting from scratch today would you do anything differently than what was advised by Throwaway Writer? I'm working on a couple different titles right now, but being new to writing - and having a primary business to take up my time/focus, I must admit it's not moving along too quickly. For me to get to 20 titles would take a year or so.

It doesn't work that way in internet marketing, so it didn't seem likely that it does in writing, either. Trends are different, and with so many people thinking it's easy and trying to get into it, it seems harder to gain visibility. But that only makes it better for those of us who are stubborn as hell. If it takes 10 books, fine. I can do that in six months, easy, and I'm talking full-length novels. If it takes 20, still fine. I might as well do something to pass the time. It's like one of those games on reality TV, who can last the longest? I can.

Internet marketing has, and continues to evolve. It's the same with any business, especially one that relies on any element of social. I guess the answer here is to do what HfR recommends - find what sells, understand why it sells and then replicate (but make sure you using friends/fans to push your books).

2. Visibility is mainly about getting your books out to all the platforms (Amazon, iBooks, Kobo, etc) and using Pinterest, Scoop.it, Twitter, etc to get the news out there. I think any serious author should start looking at how they can use Amazon communities to boost sales.

3. Staying power really is key but we also need to learn what works and what doesn't work. Beta readers and poor reviews given to any book in your genre are your friends (Thanks again for the link, CO).

Ultimately, your desires will determine your level of success. Want to make enough money to clear a few grand of debts? Your brain will work towards that and only that aim. Want to deliver real quality and build enough success to break free of the day job and live life on your terms? Then focus your mind and your brain will follow, learning all tricks as you progress.

One more thought: short stories do work - just look at the volume of reviews on some of the sixty to eighty page books on sale on Amazon - but the key is to find which genre is most supportive of shorts.
