I've been wondering if what worked two years ago is still valid. It doesn't work that way in internet marketing, so it didn't seem likely that it does in writing, either. Trends are different, and with so many people thinking it's easy and trying to get into it, it seems harder to gain visibility. But that only makes it better for those of us who are stubborn as hell. If it takes 10 books, fine. I can do that in six months, easy, and I'm talking full-length novels. If it takes 20, still fine. I might as well do something to pass the time. It's like one of those games on reality TV, who can last the longest? I can.

Some excellent thoughts there:

1. Internet marketing has, and continues to evolve. It's the same with any business, especially one that relies on any element of social. I guess the answer here is to do what HfR recommends - find what sells, understand why it sells and then replicate (but make sure you using friends/fans to push your books).

2. Visibility is mainly about getting your books out to all the platforms (Amazon, iBooks, Kobo, etc) and using Pinterest, Scoop.it, Twitter, etc to get the news out there. I think any serious author should start looking at how they can use Amazon communities to boost sales.

3. Staying power really is key but we also need to learn what works and what doesn't work. Beta readers and poor reviews given to any book in your genre are your friends (Thanks again for the link, CO).
Ultimately, your desires will determine your level of success. Want to make enough money to clear a few grand of debts? Your brain will work towards that and only that aim. Want to deliver real quality and build enough success to break free of the day job and live life on your terms? Then focus your mind and your brain will follow, learning all tricks as you progress.
