If you earn over £46,351 you pay 40% in Tax

Come over to Sweden some time. Make that 50% instead. And spend your free time listening to socialists who love to spend other people's money and constantly bash the "rich white men". It's easy to be charitable and morally superior with money that isn't yours.

thought it would be decent jump from 33k to 50k, didn't realize i jumped a tax bracket or some sh*t... 500 fukin dollars in taxes a check.
I feel like a charity.

Some kind of mysterious new "New York R" tax came out of the blue, im gonna definitely hit up HR on that bullshit.
Fukin Social Security tax for social security that i'll never get or ever want.

Didn't you get the memo from CNN? This is just you "paying your fair share".

Truth is, this isn't just about the "Slowlane" -- Ill pay six-figures in taxes THIS MONTH alone, and that's not including "penalties and interest."

Then I made it worse by watching the Mecum Auto Auction and realized I could have bought a garage full of hot cars for the amount I just pissed out the window.

The Slowlane doesn't suck, it's our bureaucratic system which incentivizes loserhood and vilifies success that sucks.

And it will only get worse as those who don't work continue to out vote those who do.

I'm a huge sucker for Charity. lol.

Earlier this year, I was in Chicago. I parked in one of the Pay Parking spaces inside the building. I came down the stairs down to the ground level. I was trying to figure out how to pay using the machine. A homeless off the streets walks up to me and teaches me how to use the machine. I said "Thank You!' to the poor guy. But after he helped me he asks, "Bacon and Eggs please! I've had no food." I'm thinking to myself, "Bacon and Eggs?" So I get outside looking around the street. Right next door there happens to be a Restaurant. I go inside and ordered some Bacon and Eggs. I came back out and gave the guy the food and $1.50 in Quarters for the bus and a $20 bill for emergencies.

Then about 2 hours later a random 8 year old girl comes up to me trying to sell me her School Fundraiser Chocolates. I looked at her and said, "Sorry kid. I just can't..." She says, "That's alright. You don't need to buy the chocolate. Care to give a donation though?" I'm thinking, "Goddamnn it" I gave her a $20 Bill and left. Of course she said, "Thanks Mister!"

8 year old kids upselling...

I'm such a sucker.

Basically the only way out is to renounce your US citizenship.

But because we have government we have to have this kind of waste.

Even the pieces of paper in our pockets called money is government.

Everything is government and it's influence once you think about it.

I forgot which political philosopher said it, but because we don't know how to think rationally and we hurt each other we have to have a government otherwise we would be rational and hurting others is not rational therefore a government would be useless.

Plot Twist, payroll department told me the "New York R" tax is correct AND it was a mistake for it not appearing on previous checks so i'll probably owe the IRS some money now.

ain't that a bitch lol u can't win
If it's a NY tax, you aren't going to pay the IRS. The IRS is a federal agency.

It is like this in the "civilized" world. I am with you on this one for sure; how can a person who works for the state or lives on wellfare have the same voting value on his vote? This is good for everyone ( politicians included as usual), but not for those who bust their asses of creating..

My belief is that votes should be weighed in responce to e.g.: what the person has done for the society. And of cource not same weight for voters accross all age groups.

All this is a different discussion, but like any macroeconomical issue, it affects building more wealth long-term, just like your case @MJ

Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
I'm not sure you understand what a "civilized society" is. We've moved past the point where certain people only have 3/5 of a vote.
If you truly think you come out ahead by being on social programs, why not join the ranks? You can then do the work you're passionate about for free. Win-win for everyone.

I'm all for paying as little taxes as possible, and I agree that tax proceeds aren't exactly used efficiently, but I don't really think that's the same as weighting the value of a person's vote for arbitrary reasons. If I make $1million this year, but only $500k next year, do I only get half a vote next year? If people have a physical or mental hurdle, is their vote worth less because they contribute less to society? Is human value that arbitrary to you?

Why do you think votes should be based on age? Are you giving more votes to young people (who are accused of wanting handouts), or more votes to old people (who mostly live on social programs), or middle-aged people who will want to make sure social programs are there when they are old?

I worry that people complaining about taxes forget about what those taxes pay for. There are a lot of things my tax dollars pay for that I don't agree with, but overall, I'm thankful for the place I live in and the freedoms it gives me. If that means I pay the government some money, then that's the "sacrifice" I'll make. If you're paying taxes, it means you're earning money.

I've been reading up on how the U.S. functioned before income taxes, they relied mostly on tariffs and had temporary taxation once in a while. Every time the whiff of permanent taxation was in the air, the public response was quite severe, people weren't used to that concept as we are now.

Pay more taxes, you evil evil capitalist

Funny how the useful idiots always seem to be protesting during work hours.

How does someone have nothing to do but chant "tax the rich" on the county steps with your politician-paid protestor sign at 10AM on a Tuesday, Wednesday and a Thursday?

Oh yea that's right, none of them have jobs.

Basically the only way out is to renounce your US citizenship.

Funny story. I've lived outside the US for over a decade.

I didn't realize until I moved that the US is one of only two countries in the world that still tax their citizens no matter where they live.*

There's an income exemption of somewhere in the ballpark of $90-100K, so you if you're just an ordinary backpacker or whatever you probably won't get stung by it even though you're legally obliged to file a return with the IRS.

Renounce your citizenship, you say? Not so fast! You're still liable for 10 years of taxation, along with all the fun taxes they want to lump on you for the privilege of stopping the abuse.

To make sure other countries don't miss the joy of being the IRS's enforcement arm, they've even been kind enough to pass a law that "strongly incentivizes" foreign banks to collect and report financial data on US citizens that hold accounts with them.

Isn't the surveillance-state bureaucracy wonderful?

* The other is Ethiopia. We keep great company!

Well, I understand your concerns truly and would agree with you, but you should visit Greece and see that with a 50% tax, the only think that governments keep doing is to hire more people in the public sector, cut pensions and add more and more taxes to keep this spiral going.

I am sick of paying taxes, in order for some idiot politician to hire his hole family tree, or a family with many members, so as to get more votes in the next elections, because they owe him a favour..I owe sh*t to the public sector and at least in my country, 1 out of 10 should work there. the other 9 should be laid off.

I have seen how the public sector in other countries works (England, Germany) and it is way better.
At least these get evaluated and laid off if something goes wrong.

The six figure tax payment is not for one month, but for several months, including some back taxes.

Join the club. With my sale, it's 7 figures.. Ouch! I never have written a check so painful.

im over it now, it is what it is, and no taxes can fully prevent an unscripted life.

I guess I was just mad because when I got the new job I was hoping to finally save "a lot" of money fast, so I could quit in a year or 2 and get part time job and just keep working on the Fastlane.

I didn't expect to lose 25% of every paycheck, it really slows down my monthly savings, cause that's an extra 500 bucks Im not saving(maybe the tax return will help a bit)

I've been reading up on how the U.S. functioned before income taxes, they relied mostly on tariffs and had temporary taxation once in a while. Every time the whiff of permanent taxation was in the air, the public response was quite severe, people weren't used to that concept as we are now.

I also believe tax brackets are not fair. You really are being penalized for success.
Even in Russia they use flat 15% tax. That seems fairer to me.

If I were rich I wouldn't abuse tax havens, but I would try to lower my effective taxation to something fairer.
I think I can be the judge of how to use my own money versus it going into some bureaucratic black hole.

will check out if i even qualify for unemployment at all...
wells... time to start looking for work... again lol

Dam!

What happened? Whats your plan now?

well yesterday i was in the basement during my break and did close my eyes for a bit, tired as hell from trying to get used to that early rising routine as discussed in my other thread lol
and my immediate supervisor barges in lol, of course the guy seemed to have it out for me for some time now. Everyone including the supervisor come in late plenty.
The supervisor is a major tool too, working 12 hours a day with no overtime pay, my coworkers and I questioned his sanity on the regular.

The whole company is def one of the most shoddily ran tech places i've ever seen, several people have left in the last few months anyway. Its like all the tech solutions to various problems were whipped up without thinking of long term consequences. The company is afloat because the idea for the service they provide is pretty genius, whoever thought of it originally is definitely a multi-millionaire. but goddamn is the execution bad lol.

I was gonna quit by the end of winter myself, was hoping to save up at least 10,000, but will have to settle for 4000.

i have met the 6 month minimum to qualify for unemployment, so ima do that monday and start looking for non office jobs. i fukin hate office jobs, i gave this one a chance after my first 4 year stint, but it didn't get any better.

No more office jobs man... id rather do mcdonalds. i spend enough time in front of a monitor working on my apps.
i can't be doing 12 hours a day in front of a computer anymore lol

But on the other hand, was the job that bad? I mean you were making enough to be in a new tax bracket, could you not have put some good work in to keep some stability for a while?
it was that bad, for me.

The tax rates in EU are pretty ridiculous, especially the VAT which you cannot avoid. But it's not THAT much different here in the US.

What's funny is that depending on the state you live in (here in America), your rate can easily surpass 50%. A top earner who derives most of his income from self-employment (1099) can expect to pay around 55% in taxes in California. Income tax, capital gains tax, sales tax, property tax, excise tax, SE (15.3% up to a threshold) tax, gas tax, etc. Thank god I no longer live in California.

This is why every time the state government (any state government) asks voters to spend money for the [insert "special" group like "the kids," the "elderly," etc.] I always vote NO.

It always means more taxes later on and the government never cuts the spending until a recession/"budget crisis." Not to mention we already spend a sh*t ton of $$$ on schools and yet their performance(s) are still horrible. Some kids are "barely literate" after graduating high school because they keep dumbing down the tests and lowering the passing grade. SMH!

People always cry about how the United States is some "evil right-wing country" when from an economics perspective, the taxes are only slightly below what you would pay in EU/Canada. I calculated what I would pay in my current state (Utah) if I earned at the top rate or more and it's something like 44%.

This is why it's absolutely imperative you switch to a corporate (K-1) or investor mindset.

If you're single and this is your only income, you're having about $50 a paycheck too much withheld for federal taxes. You might want to double check and correct your W-4.
Note: this is going forward for 2019. I did not run your cumulative number for 2018.

I'm might have a hint now why my Youtube feed suddenly spat out some videos on folks attempting to survive on 1 buck per day in NY, or on zero bucks. You must not be the only one jiving on taxes and high costs!

The vids were pretty good. Outlined lots of good street food venues, co-working places, promotion-riddled areas (read: free samples)...but I felt a Sidewalkish vibe from it that made me rather uncomfortable.

all those videos are bullshit
