Yes, though the flight isn't until 4:30. And that is if I don't reschedule.

Have you trekked that mountain before?
Yes, a number of times. @MTF hiked it barefoot. Seemed like every female that went past us either tried to engage in conversation or watched him hike on by. :) It is all rock!

Challenging but doable by most people.

I am a local to Scottsdale and if you are in pretty good shape it will take 45minutes to 75 minutes up depending on your fitness and what side you climb. Echo canyon is 1.1 miles but steeper and Cholla is 1.8 miles but flatter most of the way instead of straight up.
The difference between the 2 trails is fairly significant. I will only do Echo Canyon. The setting is much more beautiful. You are correct that it is easier on the Cholla side. But there are still rocks to climb at the top.

@SteveO are there any hidden gems near the casino where ppl could take a good 1-3 mile walk/hike without the crowds? I need nature to function well. I want to at least see the sky in Phoenix and get away from the talking for a little bit, possibly before 7am or after 7pm. But I have NO desire to fight for parking among a bunch of tourist traps.
Lots of places but not right next to the casino. Scottsdale has a greenbelt path that goes for miles.

I would like to suggest that anything you do should involve people you want to talk to. The weekend will pass very quickly.

I second the suggestion of Camelback Mountain. I went there with a member at a previous summit and it was a fun climb (although, a few questionable parts despite picking the 'safe' way up out of the two).

Great way to get out and do something physical in the sun (which, in February, was unheard of for me, being a Bostonian) before settling into those conference seats.
The safe or less intense way up Camelback is not anywhere near as pleasing to the senses.

For anyone hiking make sure you start around 6/7am and bring lots of water. You don’t want to be that tourist that gets rescued by helicopter lol it happens to often. Anyways im a local so any info i can provide i’ll gladly answer the questions.

From what I can tell all of the rental companies do not allow the vehicles driven on dirt roads. That includes the rental apps like Turo.
Looks like I'll be taking the rental to a car wash
:smuggy:

JK, I'll stay out of trouble & keep it on the road (mostly).

thank you for this! I ended up googling it and got conflicting reports because of course they don’t know how in shape or out of shape I am. I look forward to checking it out.. that is if I’m not too busy in the spa.

As @biophase suggested, we should take the partial drive up to the road closure. Then take a medium effort trail hike in the Superstitions. I've done a couple of hikes there but @AllenCrawley could probably guide us better on this.

The Apache Trail road is a little rough but not too bad. Any passenger vehicle could make it on the section we will be driving. My jeep is already full. Not sure how much room that biophase has for passengers but I'm suspecting that we will need a couple more vehicles.
I'm not aware of any hike in the Superstitions that's not amazing, lol. It's my all-time favorite area to hike. Unfortunately, the Apache Trail road is closed at Tortilla Flats (a very small "town" of about 3 shops and a restaurant) but we can park there and find a trail to hike. @SteveO is right on when he said after that point is the most spectacular views of the Superstitions.

Am totally up for shooting guns. Am actually a member of a gun club here in the UK, (in Central London - who'd believe it!) but yes, our gun laws are strict, & I've never yet shot a pistol or revolver. Up. For. This. Can we - as three foreign tourists - wander up to a range & do this - anyone from AZ/US know?
Yes, you can so long as you're older than 21 with passport should work.

I'd be down for this. A group of us went last year. Wonder if there are any outdoor ranges that do rentals around.

Scottsdale gun club will be the closest shooting range to Talking Stick. It's indoor and they have alot of variety to rent.

I don't know of any outdoor range that rents guns here. The closest outdoor range is Ben Avery, but they do not rent guns or sell ammo.

Hello everyone, I'm there from Thursday to Sunday noon. Thanks for all the recomendations. Road trip on Thursday and hiking on Sunday sounds great.
Getting to know people should be the main goal...
Yes, you are right! I am a bit of an introvert, but I will do my best to get to know people ;)

If anyone is interested theres a new “High End” Mexican Food Restaurant in Scottsdale Fashion Mall close to the event and hotel. Its called Toca Madera. I eat at their L.A. location and its pretty good. Its organic too. The guy that owns it is a Fastlaner because he has 3 of this high end places and a chain of cheeper restaurants in so-cal area. Hope you guys try it out.

I'm not scheduled to be landing in Phoenix until 3:30pm on Thursday. By the time I get off the plane and to the hotel, it'll be more around 4 or so. Probably a little too late to meet up with you guys.

Are there any plans to regroup for dinner or anything? I feel like I don't have much to offer but am hoping to meet up and hang out when possible.

LOL!!!!! No you didn't just bring up Crown Royal!

Memories of hanging out at my aunt and uncle's backyard bbq - playing with my cousins - on the southside of Chicago back in the 70's; us kids drinking Kool-Aid, while the adults sipped Crown Royal, Remy and Old Style. Michael Jackson, Marvin Gaye, Aretha Franklin, etc. blaring from the stereo speaker in the basement window. Those were the days.:smile2:
sounds like you got the first round and we'll make some new memories! :)

How long was the climb? I want to do this but my flight doesn’t get in until 4:30pm on Thursday and sunset is at 6:05pm.

I need to be outside to process stuff.. it might actually be a great use of my time to schedule this Sunday morning.. hm.

I'm sure you could get a group for Sunday morning. It is rugged terrain, you don't want to be there in the dark. I used to live at the base of the mountain. There were rescue helicopters at least twice a week during tourist season.

Looks like I should look to rent a Jeep or a Forester or something similar.

I'll have to be careful to not beat it up too much, better pop for the extra insurance

Hey guys, I'm also in town Thursday 8am until Sunday 6pm.

Down for a hike! If anyone's got space I'd love to tag along. Worst case, I can rent something and bring a few with me :)

Let me know what y'all think.

Flying in Thursday at 1:35 PM Thursday and leaving for 11AM Flight Sunday which could probably get pushed back to 7PM if anyone has something fun going on in those short times. I don't really know anyone, but that never stops me.

I arrive 11.30am Thursday and leave 720pm Sunday. I wish I was staying longer after seeing how much there is to do, maybe next year.

I am keen on a short hike and the bike ride mentioned above sounds good but I am coming from Australia so I’m not sure how I’m going to feel after all the flying and time zones.

I’d also like to try some of the huge American fast food while I’m there, just throwing that out there

and maybe shoot some guns, I’m sure there’s somewhere you can do that, does anyone know?

I’m looking forward to meeting everyone, I’ll make a bit of an intro/progress thread on the forum before the event when I get some time so people know who I am :)
