I saw the main summit thread had a lot of hiking/social questions so I figured to start a specific thread.

Myself, @JordanK, @GoodluckChuck and @Creed are all in town for a full week (Creed for more time) starting on the 4th.

If anyone can recommend any good things to see or do please let us know.

@SteveO posted this on the other thread:

Camelback mountain is real close. It is a very intense hike. Incredible views though. It is in the middle of the city.

The superstitions are filled with beauty. Many different trails and hike options. It is about 30-40 minutes away.

There are many other choices. Phoenix mountain preserve, south mountain, and McDowell's are all close by.

I'm happy to go on any of these. There's usually more than one group going out. Thursday would be the best day.

We are definitely in for this if you want to meet up with us.

I'm not aware of any hike in the Superstitions that's not amazing, lol. It's my all-time favorite area to hike. Unfortunately, the Apache Trail road is closed at Tortilla Flats (a very small "town" of about 3 shops and a restaurant) but we can park there and find a trail to hike. @SteveO is right on when he said after that point is the most spectacular views of the Superstitions.
Here are a few photos from this area...

^ View of Canyon Lake from Apache Trail before Tortilla Flat.

29761

^ View from Tortilla Flat looking North.

29762

^ View overlooking the Superstitions from a random "pull-off" while driving Apache Trail.

I have a jeep and am always up for a 4-wheeling adventure. Would need another vehicle or two for this to be viable.

We have the GX470 as well. Also the XMR, haha

Are there any good bbq places near by?

Look up NakedQ BBQ -closer to TSR & I like it better than Rudy's

I'm wondering if anyone has any interest in seeing any cool houses? I'm not sure how this would work, as people would need a vehicle to drive & I'd have to see how receptive listing agents would be.... but there are some cool a$$ houses currently on the market here in Scottsdale, like this:

20191030032608258577000000-o.jpg

I would want to do it before the Meetup, not after, as Sundays are for relaxing & hanging out, haha. Just figured I'd throw that out there as a potential option, as I know a handful of people always end up looking to move here & it might be cool to see what's possible.

Electric bike ride on Sunday at 10:am. A two hour (round trip) bike ride from downtown Scottsdale to Tempe Town lake and back.

The bikes have multiple levels of assist from no electric power to full electric. Cost is $45 for the bike rental.

The route goes along a canal, along side of Papago Mountain, behind the Phoenix zoo, through some hills, and into Tempe Town Lake. Very few streets to cross.

Will only proceed if we have 8 or more people sign up for this. There will be a group discount if we reach 14 people.

Please let me know if you intend on participating by Thursday, 1/30. Sign up only if you are committed. I need to let the rental place know the count.

Just thought I'd encourage everyone to take some Vitamin C and whatever else you like to do to boost your immunity in the days leading up to the event.

I know that when I travel / drink different water / sleep in a different bed / have a different schedule, it can take a toll on me.

Let's be at our best and brightest for this!

@SteveO are there any hidden gems near the casino where ppl could take a good 1-3 mile walk/hike without the crowds? I need nature to function well. I want to at least see the sky in Phoenix and get away from the talking for a little bit, possibly before 7am or after 7pm. But I have NO desire to fight for parking among a bunch of tourist traps.

I would suggest Sunrise trail. It's about 15 minutes away from Talking Stick.

I just looked up the Apache Trail and see that it is closed due to road damage from flooding. :(

I've never driven it but it looks beautiful. Maybe the partial drive is worth it?
The closed section of the road is the most spectacular part. Some pics from my last trip. 20190611_072845.jpg20190611_101054.jpg20190611_102942.jpg20190611_103232.jpg20190611_104820.jpg20190611_110141.jpg

Thanks @Fox for starting this thread. We'll be arriving Tuesday 4th and leaving Tuesday 11th. Can you edit the first post with confirmed plans at the top?

Ideally I'd love to climb the mountain on Thursday before the summit but if the majority of people are down for Sunday then we should do it then.

So we have a rough outline of the plan.

Thursday 6th - Roadtrip?
Friday 7th - Summit
Saturday 8th - Summit
Sunday 9th - Mountain

* I would like to visit the Grand Canyon too during my time here. Either early in the week or on Monday the 10th. If anyone has any plans around this I'd be game.

* Not sure what the laws are like in Arizona but coming from Ireland I really would love to go to a firing range or just shoot guns in general. We don't get the opportunity to do that here.

* Someone mentioned that I shouldn't visit Phoenix without driving an ATV in the Desert. Anyone know anything about that before I google it!

Personally, I want to attend a Real Estate meetup if any are being held during my time in Phoenix. I have been in contact with a lot of different people on BiggerPockets and I'm making plans for that too. If anyone else is involved in RE I would love to chat during my time here.

I'll also probably be out at the bars one of the nights (If I can fit it in) as I have a friend from my city who now lives in Phoenix that I want to meet up with.

Thanks for all the great information so far. I'm really looking forward to meeting you all in person!

As @SteveO said, nothing really close to TSR but McDowell has some great trails and isn't too far from TSR. One of the least hiked is Ringtail Trail which intersects with Lost Dog and Sunrise Peak Trails. However, those trails can get busy. The busiest trail at McDowell is Gateway Trail.

EDIT TO ADD: Ringtail is mostly flat with minor elevation changes. Our favorite way to hike Ringtail is to hike it to the Sunrise Peak intersection, then take Sunrise up about 2 miles (you'll gain a lot of elevation) or so and turn around. If you want more elevation I'd suggest this route. If feeling adventurous take Sunrise all the way to the peak. Absolutely incredible views from there.

I'm realizing I should start making some introductions! I'll be coming from Canada eh and it's my first time - I want to get the most out of this and contribute as much as I can.

If there's anyone specifically that wants to set aside time to talk software and/or SAAS and SEO, either pick my brain or may be able to offer me some advice, please let me know!

Some recent progress threads of mine are in my signature.

Well we saw this house today, huge disappointment. For $3M you get a bedroom with a bathtub in the middle and closets the size of an armoire. Sadly the house needs a complete gut on the inside.

But at least the garage had an F40 and a couple of Lambos.

Are there any plans to regroup for dinner or anything? I feel like I don't have much to offer but am hoping to meet up and hang out when possible.

People will probably start hanging out on the Talking Stick patio early evening. If you're there just come find us. Morphs into a dinner crowd.

If you guys will be renting a car I suggest to drive up to Sedona.(1-2hr drive depending of traffic) Theres some off road jeep tours you can do. There’s plenty of mountains to hike. Theres a another town called Prescott that you can go too a lot of outdoor activities. Payson is a good place to hit up. If you want something closer You can hike A mountain in Tempe and then go to the town lake. You can hike camel back mountain as well. For food and dinner options you can go to Fountain Hills, Paradise Valley , downtown PHX and of course Scottsdale. Theres a small suburb called Arcaida thats has alot of good places. And old town Scottsdale is the spot to party. Just depends what your into

Downtown Scottsdale is loaded with bars and nightlife. The ONLY reason I would go is to be in on the stories from the animals in the group. I have little interest in the drinking but enjoy watching the antics.

Octane raceway is a blast. Octane Raceway | High Speed Go Kart Racing in Scottsdale, AZ It is real close to the event.

Hiking is an obvious choice. Lots of it in the area.

Anybody here a runner? Lots of great running along the canals. I know a spot that is very scenic, not many hills, no traffic, and ends at the tempe town lake. It cuts along a canal that goes behind the zoo. Although it is in the middle of the city, it does not feel like it. There are underpasses so very little street crossing. I would be up for a 4-8 miler on Thursday.

Lots of food around the area.

I have a jeep and am always up for a 4-wheeling adventure. Would need another vehicle or two for this to be viable.

There is a beautiful drive up through the Apache Trail with incredible spots to hike along the way. There are three lakes along the road. The road is dirt. I have gone up it in a passenger car but doubt people would want to take their car on it. Kind of rough. It would pretty much be a day long event.

Sedona and Prescott have been discussed. I like them both. There is a route that would take you through Prescott, over the mountains to Jerome (awesome mountain-side, artsy, tourist stop), and on to Sedona. There may be an option for a train ride through a canyon in Clarksdale. Prescott is really known for Whiskey Row. You can google any of these.

I enjoy the great outdoors so that is where my focus is at. There are many other options in the city.

How long was the climb? I want to do this but my flight doesn’t get in until 4:30pm on Thursday and sunset is at 6:05pm.

I need to be outside to process stuff.. it might actually be a great use of my time to schedule this Sunday morning.. hm.
I am a local to Scottsdale and if you are in pretty good shape it will take 45minutes to 75 minutes up depending on your fitness and what side you climb. Echo canyon is 1.1 miles but steeper and Cholla is 1.8 miles but flatter most of the way instead of straight up.

I have decided that there is only so much time to do events outside of the summit and must choose carefully.

I plan on doing an easy off-road cruise/hike combo on Thursday. The destination is still being determined.

On Sunday, I would like to either e-bike or mountain bike south on the canal from Old Town. The destination will either be Papago mountain or Tempe Town Lake. Even though it goes through the middle of the city, it is serene and beautiful. After the initial mile or so, there are not many roads to cross. It is an interesting jaunt that takes you away from the noise and traffic.

Although I have talked about Camelback, I am going to skip it this time. I used to live in Arcadia right at the base of the mountain and have done it many times. A suggestion for those that plan on doing this is to avoid weekends. Way too busy and crowded. It will be difficult to even find a place to park. Not trying to discourage anyone from this hike, it is well worth it!

I will post more information before the event for those that want to participate. My vehicle is full for the off-roading. That may change but currently 3 members of my family are coming along. I am hoping that they will do things with other people besides me but have to save their spots just in case. :)

I live locally and would love to meet up with some (or all) of you guys anytime! Camelback is a lot of fun to hike and the weather should be perfect. There are also some nice hikes in North Scottsdale that aren't quite as demanding.

After a bit of reflection, the logistics for an off-road trip would be a bit difficult. Vehicles would be an issue. Plus the fact that the Apache highway is closed throws a bit of a damper on it.

So, I am back to Camelback Mountain on Thursday. Meet at 10:30 in the blue coyote cantina. No need to sign up for this one.

The hike is close to the event but we will still need transportation. Please let us know if you can take people along. @akotu ?
