Hey everyone, a supplier I am talking to that has just the product I want has a MOQ of 1000 pcs. I want to order like 500. Can I get tips on talking a supplier down in the MOQ? Is it impossible?

It's certainly possible to negotiate lower MOQs. I have taught hundreds how to do it.

I suggest that before you rush in, it might pay you to get some information on product sourcing and importing. It's too easy for newbies to overlook something very important.

You could start by having a look at my AMA thread: Sharing my lifetime experience in export/import. Product sourcing specialist.

Possible but normally price will be different

True, but I have never let my suppliers get away with an excessive loading for the smaller order. It is important to understand that the discount for volume is usually much less than most people imagine.

Finally found a thread I can respond to! But maybe too late? My supplier had a MOQ of 5000. I got it down to 2800 for only my first order by explaining a couple things. First is that you are looking to establish a long term business that is profitable for both yourself and the supplier. This helps them feel more comfortable making a special case for you if you are (honestly) expecting to do business with them more than once or twice. Second explain that you 'boss' (whether you actually have one or not) is only willing to do a smaller order for the first order to test the samples, or can only spend X dollars for a first order or {insert reason here}. You can always try different suppliers until you find one that you want or will work with you.

Thanks @caezlar. Kevin Fearney has my book and now knows that one way to proceed is to do more or less as you suggest, but it has to be an official order or the supplier won't proceed.
