I haven't purchased one myself, so cannot comment on the middle two questions. As far as where to get them, VeriSign is probably the most popular (brand-wise). They are incorporated into your web server's configuration. If you use Apache this is usually in your $SERVER_ROOT/extras/httpd-ssl.conf or $SERVER_ROOT/conf.d/ssl.conf file in the "SSLCertificateFile" section.

The problem is that most browsers recognize only few certificate issuers. I've sometimes gotten this message:

"Your browser does not recognize the Certificate Authority that issued the site's certificate."

Verisign is who I'd recommend for this reason alone. But they are much more expensive than others. Installing it is rather easy, most places also offer install instructions.

In the past, I bought all my Certs from Thawte. VeriSign also is a good company to use.

In a Windows Environment, the install process is in the IIS console. Apache, I have no idea.

I would do some research to find out which brand of cert has the highest correlation to conversion rate on a site.

I'm sure someone has tracked it using the logos for all the companies and done an ROI study to determine which cert company logo provides the best return for the buck. If not you could run some adwords to a survey or (slightly shady) just setup some fake logos in rotation and measure which one gets the best conversion rate.

After all the certs all do pretty much the same thing (providing that they are from a reputable company), it's really the consumer confidence that is created by the cert company logo, that you want to maximize.

I don't generally check for SSLs (as a consumer). But do these have to do with http vs. https?

Hi Lambo,

My certificate was purchased through my hosting company 1and1.com. The pricing was from them. It is the $249/yr QuickSSL plan from Geotrust. I didn't realize that it was only $49/yr cause I went through 1and1.com. Sort of makes it worthwhile to host there just for the SSL cert. Here is the text from 1and1.com. I would check with your hosting company to see what they charge, I'm guessing other hosting companies have similar deals.
