What are some of the most pragmatic and/or insightful questions you've come across in business and life?

What was the result of asking yourself or others these questions?

Here are a couple of mine:

Context - Negotiation
  • "Is that the best you can do?" - from Jim Camp, late world class negotiator

Me: So how much would that all cost?

Lawyer: That'll be $4000 - we also have a monthly installment plan... (goes into details)

Me: Is that the best you can do? *don't say another word and embrace the uncomfortable silence*

Result - Ended up saving about $1000 in lawyer fees

Context - Self Development
  • "What am I good at?" - from Peter Drucker
After a period of research, experimenting, and reflecting I realized my strengths lay in intrapersonal (vs interpersonal) and analytical (vs emotional) activities. Also that I'm better at improving efficiency vs creating, interested in systems, etc.

Result - Moved on from pursuing copywriting full-time to focus on coding. Understand what type of team members I'll need to surround myself with in the future.

I followed the science; all I found was money.

What's the one thing you can do today to move the needle?

What's the one thing that I can do, that makes everything else easier, or unnecessary (from The One Thing).

I plan my whole day around this principle.

What were the results? :)

I wussed out and took the raise and a bonus.

About 4-6 weeks after that, after being called every expletive on earth, I went to the break room, took the SIM out of my company phone, took my keys off my key chain, walked into my bosses office and said "I'm done." He begged me to stay, tried to give me 10k in cash out of his desk, and followed me out to the parking lot and tried to keep me from driving away. It was some of the most pathetic behavior I've ever seen from anyone, especially a giant loud bully. I've never been so certain a decision was right in my entire life. Should have listened to the Mrs and saved myself an extra month of abuse

When I think back on it now, the whole thing was like a shitty Lifetime movie.

Why do you know more about who the Cowboys play next than you do about your own competitors?
