People who watch "the voice" and other reality tv shit

I can't believe how my family or others waste their time on mindless entertainment. "Have you watched the Voice yesterday!?" or I went to see Start Trek the other day. Omfg. I'm like oh yeah really? It's always some talking about this bullshit around the dinner. It pisses me off. Or my friend who buys lottery tickets. What am I gonna do? Turn my back on them? I'm tired of these sidewalking behaviors coming from my family and people in my entourage. Some of you might have the same frustrations...

That said I haven't watched tv in years, I don't understand why people do it. Maybe they need an escape.
There was this guy today at the coffee shop. Guess what he was doing? Playing Tetris on his computer...
Wtf.

Maybe they need an escape.
Doesn't everyone?

It's not that much different than reading, playing sport, walking, video games... imo

It's also an easy way to connect with people which is a need we all have.

Personally I'd never watch a reality tv series because that just holds no appeal to me, but I do enjoy watching an odd series or two. I wouldn't call either "wasted" time, we all enjoy a good story and being able to talk to others about the things we like.

Countless hours watching tv you don't enjoy however, that's a different matter.

A bigger waste of time is worrying about how others are wasting their time.
Agreed. Live and let live. So your family doesn't want to dedicate their lives to starting a business. Does that make being around them any less special. My wife is into some CRAP! TV and otherwise but it doesn't make me love her any less. I'm doing my thing, it's not my problem if she wants to spend time watching trash tv.

you know man, i get how we are all individuals but i just cant seem to find entertainment in those shows. but i dont really watch tv so i guess i "wont get it" and i know plenty of people who find watching sports boring.

but seriously, people always talk about these reality shows and one time i turned the tv on and actually gave it a try. the only thing seemed mildly entertaining was the repo show where they sometimes have to go and rob motorbikes and shit LMFAO

No I don't get it either but when I'm working away I tend to have old sitcoms on in the background as I love them. I know plenty of people that don't get that either. Each to their own and all that.

I've watched the Voice off and on for years, with my wife on occasion and especially with my kids.

I guess I am slowlane then.

The older I get, the less I want to judge people based on superficial biases I manufacture in my mind to pretend I am intellectually superior.

Doing crack. Cutting. Extreme porn obsessions. Unchecked alcohol. Gambling to the point of self harm. Cheating on a spouse. Beating your kids. Stealing. Scamming. Bullying. Racism. Discrimination. Mental and emotional abuse. Abandonment. Child slavery. Rape. Poverty. Disparity.

I'm sorry --- but what has you worked up is that people watch The Voice? Enough that you made a thread about it?

Man, there are people out there who get mad about what other people do and spend their time complaining about it. I saw this guy today in the coffee shop. What was he doing? Making a thread about how wrong people are for liking what they like... Wtf.

In related news...I think Katy Perry sings it better...

To the OP - you have your goal that you're running towards, right? Pay attention to where your energy goes every day....I used to care about that stuff too and try to change the actions of others, and it just drained my energy...energy that could go towards building your dream.

MJ made a video similar to your rant a couple years ago "you might be a sidewalker if" - My OPINION on his intent of that video was to help show people like us the difference between being producers and consumers in this world...to help wake us up to this new way of thinking that allows us to be successful.

When we notice that clear difference - it allows you to realize who you really are (a producer), and as producers we don't care about that kind of stuff other people do. We have our goals, help the people who want to be helped, and we keep moving forward.

Hope that makes sense of some of the reactions people gave you here. We are just trying to keep you on focus with your goal so you succeed - we've all been through that stage of caring what others do or think, so I'm glad you got it out of your system and are ready to move forward with your goals...

Great insight. Anyway I'm thinking about leaving the forum (I don't know how) because I don't contribute musch and I have to get back my health which is my priority at the moment because I'm always sick and tired. My body is telling me that I am doing something wrong.

A lot of the foods most Americans eat make them feel tired all the time. Especially the ones that are considered "normal".

Health is important. I'm not an expert there - so the best I can say is to keep pushing forward.

That was nice of you but you didn't offend. No apology necessary. Takes a lot more than that to offend me. I'm relatively immune from caring what other people think.

Don't be so sure about saying you can't contribute. I too lately have been caring about what others around me are doing, in particular my housemates and the shows they watch. You making this thread has helped more than just yourself with the insights given by Andrew and Vigilante, that's valuable.

In terms of your health and fitness there are people here that would be willing to help you. My friend @JAMES-L67 just made an AMA where you could ask for help about anything health and fitness! Here is the link:

This forum is a very special place, where someone is always willing to help if you ask the right questions. Don't give that away!

Meh. We're all gonna be dead soon. At the end of the day, what we do is just as meaningless.

Besides, people who read a business book after the other are mindwanking just as much as the ones who watch The Voice.

By the way, don't you have an avatar from Boardwalk Empire? Great show, but just as non-productive as playing tetris in a coffee shop.

Maybe you need to partake in some mindless entertainment. I'd say doing so is a hell of a lot better than working 100% of the time. I use to think the way you do, but all that did is drove me to work so much I couldn't enjoy life. Some times you just gotta screw around and have fun, whether that's watching The Voice or not.

Yep, lately I find myself so many times frustrated about shit not working how I want it to work. Thinking about it now, it would've probably helped to turn the pc down for an hour and do something else to get the head free. Sometimes those "mindless" activities help to stop running in circles and clear your head for fresh new ideas.

I think that the average employee working for somebody else has five good hours a day worth of work in them.

I think you can double that for the average entrepreneur who is incentivized by the fruit of his/her own labor.

Yep, at the job I work, I probably need 4-5 hours out of the required 8 hours to complete the work I need to do. Good thing is I can spend those remaining hours working on my business. But yeah I get more "real" work done in 2 hours for my business, then I do in 8 hours at the job.

Countless hours watching tv you don't enjoy however, that's a different matter.

It truly is all about this. Sit me on a beach for the day, take away my phone / laptop and put me in front of a TV or a cinema screen and you will be putting me through inordinate amounts of mental torture because they do nothing for me.

Actually, that's a lie. They are so not what works for me that they stress me out as I get fixated on what I could be doing so come back to work annoyed about the time I've wasted and while I may have new ideas they tend to come from a negative mind space so are more likely to be reactive than proactive.

However, at the other end of the spectrum some of the most successful entrepreneurs I know use all the things I've just said to recharge their batteries and from the results they get I can say it truly works for them.

For me, relaxing tends to fall into two categories - doing some kind of risk-taking activity that makes me feel alive and clicks me back into that flow state where I excel or doing quite the opposite of those who like to turn off to recharge and throw myself into learning something completely new.

Does that make me better than reality TV watchers? Nope, it just makes me different. Whatever gets people to where they want to go, I'm all for it, whether that's a 40 hour minimum wage career for the rest of their lives or being the biggest and best you can possibly be.

I used to get really worked up over people (idiots) walking around with their faces in their phones. I get the burning desire to slap the phone out of their hands and scream at them to take in real life, at a minimum at least while they are walking and driving.

How have I taught myself to get over this? Every time I see it (which is incredibly often), I say to myself "this is my competition in life". Yup, this is going to be easy. Look who I have to compete against, they don't stand a chance.

Oh, and I recently started watching The Office with my wife. One of the best lines I have ever heard was said in that show. The receptionist has a burning desire to go to art school and she thinks of all the reasons why she can't go. One of her co-workers says to her "There will always be reasons not to do something, sometimes you just need to say yes".

I use to be you OP.
I use to get pissed off at the people watching American Idol or Real Housewives of Who cares.

Thing is, you need to step back and look at what you've done today. Are you at least one step closer towards accomplishing your goals?

If yes, what are you doing complaining about other people? You have goals to complete.

If no, you're a hypocrite. Flat out. Posting here is your version of "The Voice", or motivational videos. Go set some goals or do something to BETTER YOURSELF.

I'm not saying I'm perfect or have the answers.

I don't.

Contempt definitely isn't the answer though. Otherwise, my entire family would be billionaires.

OP:

I'm gonna go out on a limb here. You didn't listen to my advice, or the advice of anyone here, did you?

You're still stuck in a spiral of self hatred. Depressive sloth and manic motivation. You lash out because you see in them what you see in yourself.

What the hell have you done this week?

Don't tell me about the ideas you had, the Google Docs business plans you wrote, or the Amazon products you researched. Tell me WHO YOU TALKED TO this week and how it's pushed you further. A manufacturer, a prospect, a designer, a member of this forum who is willing to get on a call with you?

Do something, dammit!

By the way, I had an old Internet friend who was on the Voice. In Norway. Here's his audition:
