Just a heads up. For those who do online business. Keep an eye out on your accounts.

I was just going to log in to my paypal account to give them a call about a unauthorized claim on one of my orders but the website is down. I google "paypal" to see if they have any outage updates and apparently Paypal, Twitter, Facebook, Netflix, Spotify and a few more are under a mass cyber attack going on right now. It is being investigated.

It's pretty damn disruptive. I can tell you quite a bit of corporations breathed a sigh of relief when they could say "hey, it's happening to Twitter and Netflix too".

Like where I'm sitting right now ^.^

Apparently customer aren't being allowed to checkout on certain websites like eBay and listings are not showing photos. I am not sure about Amazon though.

it shows that internet business is very fragile

google can drop you from their algorythm
power grid can shut down
hackers can destroy anything

maybe, this is not a good idea to do business online while you have to pay the bills

Thats not true. Digital Businesses, brick and mortar businesses, franchises, and so on have all their pros and cons.

The part about Googles change is true, but saying a criminal act should turn you down is nonsense. While they attack you digitally, some a**hole could attack your store physically.

DHS is saying it might be state sponsored DDoS. Great... hey Russia. Chill.

yeah, I believe that as much as I believed the Iraq WMD claims.

This admin has been cheerleading for conflict with Russia for weeks. Old Man Biden was on T.V. threatening the same thing against Russia, just last week. It's all too tidy and wrapped up.

Haven't read to much into it but apparently it has something to do with Wikileaks recent leaked e-mails and Homeland security getting involved that led to wikileaks supporters to threat the US with a cyber attack.

Yes, the attack is targeted on the DNS provider DynDNS that many well-known brands use. That's why they have issues. This explains everything:

"DNS provider DynDNS, also known as Dyn.com is currently being attacked using a very aggressive DDoS attack. If you use them for your website DNS you probably have experienced outages today.

You can get status updates from DynDNS themselves here and also on Twitter.

This attack affects any website or online service that uses Dyn.com for DNS resolution. So far this attack has affected:

  • Paypal
  • Netflix
  • Wordcamp ticket sales were affected earlier today according to WP Slack #community-team channel.
  • Github
  • Twitter
  • Esty
  • Soundcloud
  • Spotify
  • Amazon
  • Heroku
  • Shopify
  • PagerDuty
  • ZenDesk
  • Braintree
  • Fastly
  • Cloudflare
And many other large well known brands."

What you can do if you are affected:

"If you are affected by this attack, you should consider setting up another DNS provider as your secondary DNS or temporarily moving all DNS to another provider. This appears to be what Amazon has done to mitigate the attack. You will need to exactly duplicate your DNS configuration on the new provider before making it the authoritative DNS for your domain and this may take some time. The transfer may take up to 48 hours, by which time this may all be over.
  • External assets like fonts, style-sheets, javascript (like jQuery), images or any external page component you load from an outside server. These may become inaccessible and stall the page load. The fix in this case is to move that asset onto your own server and reference it locally.
  • Social media integration. Twitter was not available earlier today and if it’s API becomes unavailable, it may affect certain pages loading and may affect user’s ability to share posts.
  • Backups. If your backups are stored off-server on an external domain, make sure that domain stays accessible or backups may not be copied over.
  • Checkout. Already mentioned, but if your payment processor goes offline, it will stall all transactions on your site and may even make certain pages inaccessible. Paypal has been affected by this but appears to be back.

I'm online on the big three: eBay, Etsy, and Amazon. So far I've had 17 eBay orders. 0 for Etsy or Amazon. This is unheard of, I get daily sales on all sites.

Luckily, my to-do list is pretty long so I spent the day killing as much of it as I could, instead of worrying about not getting orders. A couple of back up plans are percolating in my mind right now, in case this becomes a regular thing.

The DNS provider will be much more prepared next time, so this probably won't happen again. There's nothing to worry except one thing. DDOS attacks are sometimes used in conjunction with other attacks.

Hackers may use DDOS to distract the company and while the company is dealing with the DDOS attack the hackers may start the actual attack. But because of DDOS the real hack may not be detected.

DDOS attacks may be used to create noise, so that they can actually hack the system without getting noticed.

So if you have accounts on these sites, I think it would be wise to change your passwords. And if your credit card is saved in one of them, then renew your credit card.

It doesn't appear to be Russian hackers this time.

This means it could only be the Chinese.

Or literally one of the thousands of groups capable of pulling off this kind of attack, who could want to do so for any multitude of reasons, and will probably never be found out.

Of course the media will start saying it's Russia, as if a DDoS attack of this size could be traced with any conclusive evidence.

This DDOS Attack was performed mostly by devices of the IoT (Internet of Things) category.
They were in infected with a bot, and formed a bot-net to attack Dyn.com and others.

So check your fridge, web-cam and smart-TV for bots ... and porn. ;)

The simple cure for this attack would have been to change the default manufacturer password to a personal one.
Ok, it would not have stopped it, but it would have been a lot less severe.
