The part with relationships really makes sense a lot. You can just help out random people, build relationships with them, create a reputation based on your expertise, just like Andy did. This is more than "Free Marketing for small businesses/individuals.

It's kind of a way to sell without learning "How to sell". You just do your best on helping someone, based on your primary skill.

It works naturally.

Pick up the phone. Outreach is number one when you are starting. Get on the phone. Knock on doors. Get the objections first hand and find a way to work through them. See first hand that you need to pivot your product / service / message.
