Nanorobots: Where We Are Today and Why Their Future Has Amazing Potential
This post is a status update on one of the most powerful tools humanity will ever create: nanotechnology (or nanotech).

My goal here is to give you a quick overview of the work going on in labs around the world, and the potential applications this nanotech work will have in health, energy, the environment, materials science, data storage and processing.

As artificial intelligence has been getting a lot of the attention lately, I believe we're going to start to see and hear about incredible breakthroughs in the nanotech world very soon.

Couldn't find one of the articles so I removed it for now.

The other one should be fixed. Stumbled on this while searching. :)

NASA gives the green light on 8 projects to move into next phase of development. NIAC’s phase II awards $500,000 for two years of study in order to further test technologies. This year's selections include a habitat designed to induce cryosleep for long-range missions, a robotic space habitat that is able to build itself and grow in lunar orbit (making it a perfect orbital outpost), and more.

Here's an interesting look at occupations most likely to be affected by automation and AI advances.

To put it simply - robots are taking over jobs.

I pulled this from an article on robots and basic income here.

These predictions are based on estimations over the next 10 years.

Not only does it suggest which occupations are in trouble...

It indirectly highlights opportunities for wise entrepreneurs.

May be time to start that automated sewer or library tech startup you've been pondering.

And if you find yourself out of work you can teach Kindergarten by day and strip at night. ;)

Does the low point on clergy signify religious beliefs as transhumanism?

Just a short, un-bridled thought that sprung to mind seeing that graph.I mean no offence or controversy.

TBH I'm not sure. Some of the occupations really surprise me.

The chart spans a 10 year period running through 2025, but wasn't made with transhumanists necessarily in mind.

It's difficult to say for sure since definitions of roles such as clergy are likely to shift and change.

Transhumanism is taking hold as a system and certain organizations will definitely have some form of clergy.

The occupation itself has been around for thousands of years, but so have many others which are on the chopping block.

"Society never advances. It recedes as fast on one side as it gains on the other. It undergoes continual changes; it is barbarous, it is civilized, it is christianized, it is rich, it is scientific; but this change is not amelioration. For every thing that is given, something is taken."

-Emerson

I am very enthusiastic about longevity it will happen but it's not the way we think it will though, if persons live longer that's great because all of us want to live longer and get more out of life. When we live longer though some of the diseases are not going go away because new diseases will evolve like evolution. we adapt to certain conditions as humans and evolve, that's the same way some viruses works as well heck we even still have viruses on our dna that we caught millions of years ago as species. The only way this could stop is if we leave our bodies and put our consciousness into robots and that's a long long way off..........

*in your opinion

Transferring conscious into robots isn't the "only" way to defeat disease. There's a plethora of information to suggests otherwise.

Artificial intelligence is rapidly transforming and over the next 10 years there's a high probability diseases will be defeated faster than they can cause problems.

Nanotechnology is already poised to do this by working from within the body without human assistance.

Regarding these advances being a "long long way off", that's also not true.

Current predictions pinpoint most diseases being defeated within 10 years and the Singularity occurring in 2045.

Here's a PBS article posted yesterday in a life-extension community.

Scientists Built a Giant Molecule that Could Fight Nearly Any Viral Infection

It's insane how much untapped potential there is for entrepreneurs in longevity... So many markets emerging. So many ways to build multi-million or billion dollar companies. Tons of investors waiting to back you. Not to mention you'll likely become part of history.

Here's an article from Business Insider about a demographic shift that'll occur by 2020.

"We are living in the midst of the most remarkable demographic transition in history with life expectancy to reach 77.1 by 2050E (vs. 48Y in 1950), the global 60+ population to grow to 2.1bn by 2050E (vs. 901mn today); the median age worldwide to hit 36 by 2050E (vs. 29.6 today); and life expectancy increasing by 1Y every 5Y. We are arriving at 'peak youth' for the first time in human history with the number of persons aged 65+ expected to outnumber children under-5 by the end of this decade. Aging has also become a universal phenomenon, and by 2050E, 80% of older people will live in EMs. Life expectancies of 300-400Y or even an infinite extension of life expectancy may be within reach in our lifetimes."

Basically older people are sticking around and that means society will need to shift their current perspective about what it means to be old. Instead of just writing them off and leaving them for dead, old will soon take on new meaning. The context changes and therefore everything changes. This is a long game for marketers and business people. 20 or 30 years from now the way you think about selling to old people will be very different from how you think about it now.

IBM says it's designed a molecule that could fight off any human virus

Part of the difficulty in tackling viruses like Ebola and Zika is that they're all so different, and each one can regularly mutate to create different strains within the same virus.

To address this, scientists have been busy looking at common characteristics of viruses that could be used to develop an all-powerful vaccine capable of fighting off any infection, and researchers over at IBM say they're getting close.

LIFESPAN.IO - LONGEVITY RESEARCH CROWDFUNDING

0495d06.png

A highly niche crowdfunding platform for projects in the reverse aging and longevity industries.

There are only 2 projects posted on the site. 1 was by SENS Research Foundation and was successfully funded for $46,128.

The second project is still in the works and has raised $27,555 so far with 31 days to go.

If you have a bright idea for life extension this might be a good start. There's literally no competition at all.

Made me think of this thread. Not sure if you consider it a "resource," but it should be interesting to folks who are into longevity.

It applies. Thanks for sharing! :)

The thread shifted a little from just resources / websites to include anything that might be useful for someone interested in life extension.

In the end it's about helping people continue to exist for as long as they want to, however long that may be.

Dietary fiber has biggest influence on successful aging, research reveals

Eating the right amount of dietary fiber from breads, cereals, and fruits can help us avoid disease and disability into old age, according to an open-access paper published in The Journals of Gerontology, Series A: Biological Sciences and Medical Sciences by scientists from The Westmead Institute for Medical Research in Australia.

Using data compiled from the Blue Mountains Eye Study, a benchmark population-based study that examined a cohort of more than 1,600 adults aged 50 years and older for long-term sensory loss risk factors and systemic diseases, the researchers found that out of all the factors they examined — including a person’s total carbohydrate intake, total fiber intake, glycemic index, glycemic load, and sugar intake — it was, surprisingly, fiber that made the biggest difference to what the researchers termed “successful aging.”

Here's an interesting link:

First phase 1 human aging reversal trials (GDF, Myostatin) in a year or two and George Church discusses how to affordably rejuvenate the whole body

The new goal is to reverse aging, not only in animals, but in humans. And age reversal is essential, as significant age-related disruption has already occurred in most people due to changes in our gene expression profiles.

Gene expression patterns change with age. This influences the rate at which an individual ages, and also determines what senile disorders they are likely to contract. But innovative gene-editing methods based on a unique technology called CRISPR (clustered regularly interspaced short palindromic repeats) are now being successfully harnessed for use as an age-reversal therapy for humans.

In response to these breakthroughs, Life Extension® magazine sent biogerontologist Dr. Gregory M. Fahy to Harvard University to interview Dr. George Church, who is a leading developer of cutting-edge CRISPR techniques. Here, Dr. Church explains remarkable opportunities for transforming human aging that may begin to unfold sooner than most have imagined.

A promising anti-ageing drug is about to undergo human trials for the first time

Can we really hope to slow down the ageing process? The compoundnicotinamide mononucleotide (NMN) has shown plenty of promise at increasing the lifespans of mice, and is about to be put to the test in human clinical trials for the first time.

Next month, 10 healthy volunteers will be given NMN to see if it can slow down ageing without any harmful side-effects. If the results are positive and the drug is given the all-clear for public use, it'll be the first genuine anti-ageing product on the market.

...................

While NMN could be the first anti-ageing drug to officially hit the market, it's far from the only one in development. Last year, the experimental Alzheimer's drug J147 was found to have several anti-ageing effects - again in mice - while a common diabetes drug called metformin is also being trialled on humans as an anti-ageing treatment this year.

.....

Great find!

Anyone reading at this point might note that Dr. Bill Andrews (See the first post in this thread) openly stated that human trials of reverse aging treatments would begin within a year and aging could be defeated in 2016. This article makes it clear we're right on track. Liz Parrish is already undergoing reverse-aging treatments of her own with her company BioViva and now this.

It's a very exciting time to be alive.

*Side Note*
They misspelled aging.

Also the technical term is reverse aging, not anti-aging. Anti-aging suggests a way to slow the aging process. This is a label used by many skin-care products to make people think they help you maintain your looks even as you age. Anti-aging suggests a deterrent.

Reverse aging implies stopping the aging process and turning it around completely. This is more along the lines of a 60 year old human returning to a 20 year old body.

*Side Note 2*
The original cited article was written 3 years ago and maintained the cost of the product was around $1,000 per gram. Since humans would need 500 grams per day the treatments would only be affordable by the wealthy.

Just wanted to point this out as one more reason to keep working on your Fastlane goals! Until the treatment is mass produced it won't be cheap, and depending on how old you (or anyone) is, you may be running out of time.

There's also a book on the way that mentioned NMN (among a lot of other potential drugs), the Longevity Cookbook.
It was crowdfunded on IndieGoGo.

This is more singularity related stuff here, but rather interesting.

Artificial synapses mimic human brain

New microscopic gadgets mimic the connections between neurons in the human brain better than any previous devices, Scientific American reports. “The artificial synapses mimic the structure of actual human nerve fibers’ long shape and flexibility.”

..........................

First microchip to contain 1,000 processors

A microchip containing 1,000 independent programmable processors has been designed at the University of California, Davis, the school reports. Other multiple-processor chips have not exceeded about 300 processors.

.....

The chip is also the most energy-efficient “many-core” processor ever reported, and “executes instructions more than 100 times more efficiently than a modern laptop processor.”

Most powerful supercomputer

A new Chinese supercomputer is three times faster than its predecessor.

Called Sunway TaihuLight, it is based at the National Supercomputing Center in Wuxi.

The previous fastest computer, the Tianhe-2, is powered by Intel Xeon chips – but the processors inside the new use a new 260-core chip developed by the National Research Center of Parallel Computer Engineering & Technology in Beijing, IEEE Spectrum reports.

Scientists Are Trying to Modify The Naked Mole-Rats’ Cancer Resistance For Humans

Naked mole-rats are the longest-living rodent species, and they exhibit 'extraordinary' resistance to cancer. Understanding these animals' anti-cancer mechanisms may help advance human treatment, according to a collaborative research team from Hokkaido University and Keio University in Japan.

Recently, we reported that scientists have found that the same gene responsible for multicellular life is also the gene responsible for suppressing various genes in humans, and it is this gene that is found to be defective in cancer patients.

Now, researchers are looking to the naked mole-rat (NMR) for another cancer-suppressing gene.

Among rodent species, mole-rats live the longest — up to 30 years, which is 10 times the lifespan of mice. And remarkably, cancer has almost never been detected in captured colonies. A collaboration between Hokkaido University and Keio University in Japan is investigating how these animals are keeping cancer at bay in order to advance treatment options and potentially find solutions for humans.

Rejuvenation Biotechnology 2016 will be Held at the Buck Institute in California
https://www.fightaging.org/archives...-be-held-at-the-buck-institute-in-california/

Rejuvenation Biotechnology 2016 is the latest in a series of conferences hosted by the SENS Research Foundation, focused on bringing together industry and academia to pave the way for the advent of first generation rejuvenation therapies. The first of these therapies are already in clinical development, each narrowly focused on one cause of aging, such as senescent cell clearance at Oisin Biotechnologies and some of the SENS Research Foundation's own drug candidates for breaking down damaging metabolic waste at Human Rejuvenation Technologies. There are numerous other examples I could give, for either work based on the SENS vision of controlling aging through repair of cell and tissue damage, or other initiatives with less ambitious goals. If all goes well, they will be available in clinics outside the US within a few years, and have passed through the regulatory system inside the US at most a decade from now.

Building a whole new field of medicine and getting it into the clinic doesn't just magically occur, however. This is a big deal, and requires allies, advocacy, setting expectations, and either pulling in the heavyweight support of Big Pharma or creating an entirely new network of distribution and validation akin to the medical tourism industry for stem cell therapies. Laying these foundations for the work that lies ahead is one of the goals of the Rejuvenation Biotechnology conferences. You can look back in the Fight Aging! archives to read about the 2014 and 2015 conferences; well attended and well spoken of. You might take a look at this year's program for a sense of how the theme will follow on from prior years. Rejuvenation Biotechnology 2016 is being held at the Buck Institute for Research on Aging just North of the Bay Area, California. It is invitation only, I'm afraid - the wages of success and popularity - so if you feel the need to attend, you should contact the SENS Research Foundation folk and ask. The conference will be streamed live this year, however, so no-one need miss out.

Rejuvenation Biotechnology 2016, August 16-17

World populations are aging, and the social and economic burdens of age-related disease are rising steeply. For an increasing number of elderly individuals, healthcare is too often reduced to crisis management in the emergency room, painfully harsh treatments for diseases such as cancer, or best efforts at palliative care.

SENS Research Foundation exists to end aging. Since 2009 we have worked to make the concept of rejuvenation biotechnology - the repairing of the damage which occurs to our bodies as we age - into a reality. Our research, education and awareness programs have created the foundations of the Rejuvenation Biotechnology Industry, an industry that will be capable of targeting the diseases of aging with genuine, effective, affordable cures.

The 2016 Rejuvenation Biotechnology Conference is focused on taking the Rejuvenation Biotechnology Industry to the next level by addressing the question: what will it take to push emerging breakthroughs in regenerative medicine from proof-of-concept to implementation? This year's conference seeks to answer this critical inquiry by covering all the stages from securing funding, to production, to navigating regulation, to clinical evaluation and adoption of new treatments. Industry-leading experts will present real-life examples drawn from their own work followed by an open panel discussion and Q&A. As with our previous conferences, we provide ample time for networking with industry leaders, funders and researchers.

Due to our limited space the 2016 Rejuvenation Biotechnology Conference is an invitation-only event. In order for our entire community to be able to participate we will be live streaming the conference and everyone is invited to join us via the live stream. To stay in the loop for our live streaming, please register today.

I remember this interview i saw recently of Peter Thiel.
He was asked by Tim Ferriss what is a problem he thinks about every day that need to be solved.

His answer was aging.
And he said he is amazed that not much work is being conducted for a problem that unanimously all 7 billion population in the world faces.
