Episode 40 is here!

Another great episode featuring my wife, Brittany, should soon be making its way to your favorite podcasting apps!

Great episode, being married myself there were some spots that made me chuckle.
1. When she starts going down the path how Gov. use to just be there and wasn't good/bad and had an awakening- out loud I say to myself, "well of course, she is married to @Kak". It brought back the little things in my marriage, like how my wife ate only well done steak while dating until I refused to keep letting my steaks get cold and cooked them both Med. Now I get fussed at if I over cook the steaks lol.

2. You correcting her pronunciation and what "I felt I heard" in the tone of her voice right after was as if she was thinking "whatever...you knew what I meant, you always correct me..." as if you might do this occasionally and she is just use to it by now.

Keep 'em coming

Lol I don't even remember when I did this! Locus of control maybe?

We have a very chill banter. This is like a day in the life at the Kak household.

Yup, that was the part. Could have just been the way I heard it though, I was in the garage working.

Ah gotcha, yeah, in "studio" her body language said "what was that thing called again?"

Really enjoying your Podcasts @Vigilante and @Kak. I haven't been saying much as I'm trying to keep my politics out of the Fastlane Forum. But in a nutshell I'm an ex History teacher who specialises in Propaganda, Ancient History and the Middle East. #USSLiberty

Your podcasts are really interesting and I'm learning loads of great tips.. from remote phone services to getting a company credit card and I'm in touch with the VA-Locator team in Venezuela...

I have to confess... those of us outside the USA have a very poor stereotype of people from the American South... White Supremicist/Religious Fundamentalists who watch the Racist Fox propaganda channel 24/7, and don't even get me started on Captain Carnage... :shit:
BUT you are really shaking that up... so please continue!

I'd love to debate every single episode of both your podcasts as I find them fascinating... but who has the time! I live in Dublin Ireland and we have a semi-Socialist model with low tax and low services... Its fundamentally flawed as there is really no incentive to work and people can get houses/apartments for free while couples who both work fulltime can't afford houses in the major cities.... On the other hand if you fall on hard times the goverment will pay for as many courses as you need and they will feed and house you until you land back on your feet...
In truth we Europeans would much rather hold onto our heavily flawed model over the US system! But neither are ideal to put it mildly!

I'm really enjoying the debates on Capitalism, Tax, Libertarianism and removing government.... but I have a rather more dim view of humanity.... If I saw employers making sure their lowest paid/trained workers were getting upskilled with a view to elevating them in society then I might be more positive... but even here in semi-socialist Ireland most employers want to keep the lowest paid workers as low paid and as low skilled as they can... It's just not Star Trek.... :humph:

Keep up the good work,

Hadrian

Funny you say that. Myself and my wife had that conversation yesterday for the umpteenth time (we live in County Kildare, Ireland).

FYI, this episode hasn't synced to Spotify yet and I also can't find you on Apple podcasts (the link doesn't work for me and you don't show up in search results). Maybe technical glitch?

Listening on Spreaker now, but I prefer 1,5-2x speed for most podcasts and unfortunately the web interface doesn't seem to allow that.

Thanks. Will check that out. Just switched back to Spreaker so there must be some lag in connecting the RSS feed

Meanwhile here’s an Apple link

It's interesting that the saying "the grass is always greener on the other side" seems to hold true here too. Sitting in Germany, I'm actually looking at Ireland as a potentially better place to live (green island with lower corporate taxes). Yet, you have the same complaints :clench: . It would be funny if it weren't so sad :(

I like living here. It’s a little step back in time compared to the UK. Like how things used to be when people were more focused on family. It’s a small country and you can feel the sense of belonging people have. Everyone knows everyone else. People are friendly. It reminds me of home.

Excellent... I smiled more than once listening to this... I actually had to stop dating as I would be sitting at dinner thinking about ideas or coming up with Eureka moments while my date was sitting there bemused!

Pretty much going through everything you discussed... I'd nearly go as far as to say you acquire temporary Narcissisism and Bi-polar disorder while on this journey.. but it is temporary right? :eyes:

Hey in Germany don't they start reducing your benefits after 6 months and keep reducing it forcing you to get a job? I like that idea... we have entire communites here and in the UK who live off benefits all their lives... But yes Ireland while expensive (Rents are ludicrous in the major cities) is still a nice safe place to be with lots of work available if you go after it!!!

I remember my friend from Heidelberg told me a story that convinced me that Communism was not the way forward... (Corruption and tyranny aside)... He used to work at music festivals and would be up early making his stall selling hotdogs/breakfast baps etc... but before the wall came down in East Germany that didn't happen as the societal system didn't engineer the hunger to make shit happen!

Conversely I have to remind my Capitalist friends that our societies are only Capitalist while the wealthy are making big profits... when things go ill we become Socialist very very fast until the losses are mitigated and the economy picks up again.

But if you can't beat 'em I guess you gotta join 'em! :fistbump:

@Andy Black you might really like this!

I posted this in the blog section at KillBigger.com today... It is all about my setup and how I have changed things over the last two months. I am really in a place where I can say I am happy with my audio quality. I still want to get the legendary ElectroVoice RE-20, but I will reward 100k downloads with that one.

I was asked what equipment and tools I now use to make my podcast… The learning curve to getting super clear audio is is pretty steep. It took me quite a while to get this to a place where I am happy with it. Eventually, what you want to do is get a process down that is super consistent across all of your episodes.

First let’s talk equipment.

I started off with a Blue Snowball Ice. I quickly realized that condenser mics are best used in professional studios, not my office. Shortly after I started, I knew I needed a dynamic microphone as soon as possible. I bought the AudioTechnica ATR 2100 X- USB. It can be purchased on Amazon for about $100. This microphone is also recommended and deployed by Tim Ferriss in some roles for his very popular and professional podcasts. I still own the Audio Technica microphone, and every time I feature Brittany, my wife on KBRS, this is the microphone she is using. As you can tell, it is super clear.

I have switched several things around since the beginning… The equipment I currently use is as follows.

Focusrite Scarlet 2i2 Generation 3 Audio Interface
– These cost about $175 on Amazon and allow me to record two microphones at once. It also helps me control my gain better than the USB microphone.

My main show microphone is currently a Lewitt MTP 500 DM. These are super well built microphones that weigh an absolute ton! The sound they can produce for a mere $150 is epic.

My secondary microphone that Brittany uses when she joins me on the show is the Audio Technica ATR 2100 X -USB microphone. I use it with an XLR connection to the Focusrite Scarlet.

My headphones are Anker Soundcore Life Q20 and I am very happy with them considering they were only about $60 on Amazon. You need to be monitoring your microphone in real time, this will train you in microphone control and make sure you aren’t doing something that sounds bad. It gets easier as time goes on. At first I hated monitoring and would roll a show without headphones. Now, I can’t live without them. Do this right from the beginning because why do anything if you don’t do it right?

My podcast host is Anchor.fm. I chose Anchor because they are owned by Spotify. Spotify is playing to win in this category and so am I. I also would require a very expensive plan from most other podcast hosts because of the volume of content I produce. FREE definitely doesn’t hurt at all. I am happy with Anchor and wish I wouldn’t have had to transition over to them. I DO NOT use ANY of the recording software within Anchor… I literally upload a complete audio file, title and describe the episode and click publish.

Speaking of FREE! I use Audacity to record. Audacity is an open source audio editing software. It does more than I need it to. I couldn’t be happier with Audacity.

Having the right equipment is just the first step… I also have to put it all together in a way that sounds great… THIS is the learning curve. Buying good stuff is easy, making it sound good took time.

1.) When I go to record a show, the first thing I do is add my introduction bump into Audacity and add additional MONO track for my voice. NOT STEREO. Just trust me on this you will be disappointed if you record a stereo track and it only comes out of one headphone. You can fix that later, but just record mono, unless you have a guest IN STUDIO.

2.) Then I test my microphone by opting to monitor in Audacity. You can watch how high your sound levels get. You want to make sure you leave quite a bit of headroom. I like to talk the loudest I will probably get and make sure it doesn’t exceed -6 DB. It is OK if that looks quiet as you are recording, you fix that later. Better to bring audio up than overmodulating a bunch.

You adjust this with the gain on the Focusrite Scarlet. Leave your microphone volume level in Audacity right in the middle where it is default. I can’t stress this enough, leave yourself headroom.

3.) Address the microphone from the side… This again makes you even quieter, but that is OK because it fixes a lot of things like loud breathing noises and plosives. It took me a while to finally standardize to addressing the microphone from the side.

4.) Hit record. Record the show to completion.

5.) Add your ending music as a third track.

NOW we get into post processing of the voice file!

  1. The first thing I like to do is select the entire voice track and amplify it to 0db. This makes it as loud as it can be without over modulation and doesn’t change the dynamic range on the audio.
  2. The next thing I do is scan the audio visually looking for heavy breathing noises and when I find them I note how loud they are by selecting them and playing them.
  3. Use the Noise Gate function at a threshold JUST ABOVE those breathing noises. I like to bring them down about 25db. Test it and apply it to the entire track. If you get too zealous with this you will cut out your own voice, so be careful. This is a fantastic tool that will cut out all of the background noise in the silence. This is enough for me, I don’t seem to need to use noise reduction in the background while I am talking. If you do need to use noise reduction, you should do that BEFORE you gate the audio you won’t be able to establish a profile for the noise.
  4. Now I go into Filter Curve and use the standard Bass Boost function to get a nice warm radioy sound. I apply this to the voice track.
  5. I run the compressor. The compressor doesn’t actually compress the bitrate of your audio… It levels out your dynamic range so the loudness is consistent across the entire track. It makes a huge difference. I like running the compressor at 3.5 to 1.
  6. Now that you have run the compressor, quickly scan the voice track for breathing that might have made it through the noise gate, because they just got a lot louder… Select these breathing noises individually and use the amplify function to bring them DOWN about 35db. (This is not super important, but I do it sometimes when I am stuffy for instance and might have had more breathing noises than usual.)
  7. Normalize the voice track to -3db.
At this point, your episode should be complete! You can export it ALWAYS as a MONO file. And depending on your podcast host, set the highest bitrate for the mp3 that they accept.

I hope this helps for those of you wondering how my audio has gotten to where it is. Results may vary, but this is the process that I use.

Ok I have a GIVEAWAY for you guys.

The first to post what crop the hypocritical subsistence farming socialist better get used to eating will get a kindle book on me.

Radishes. they’re quick to harvest, can be used as garnish for dishes and easily flavored to not taste like radishes. Can be incorporated into many dishes.

For the barter-everything “live as much as you physically can off the land” homesteading subsistence farmer, there are few other plants that can tide you over.

Let’s face it, if you aren’t going to engaging in commerce the only way you can trade without money is barter.

If you refuse a modern age standard of living because you believe Industrialization is the worst thing to happen to humanity, because the innovations of the last 200 years have enabled boundless resource extraction, and you believe consuming is another word for destroying; then the best live you can live is as a Fastlane entrepreneur.

Plastic wastes, overfishing, deforestation, and single use plastics (to name a few) are real problems - real problems looking for real solutions. If you solve one of these problems as a Fastlane entreprenuer, you can make every impact you want to see in the world. If you live the rest of your life as a glorified subsistence farmer (regardless of what that self sufficient vision looks like in your head), then the only significant impact you can hope to make will be limited to the closest 3 people to you. As a glorified subsistence farmer, Your best case scenario for making an impact is being featured by a few vloggers. Don’t be miserable.

Considering Puerto Rico's Act 20 and 22? We Consult An Expert! - Ep 44

Are you considering Puerto Rico's Act 20 and 22? We have a fantastic guest on the show today!

We finally got the show that I have been extremely excited about. How can we LEGALLY lower our tax burden with Puerto Rico's Act 20 and 22? I have a fantastic discussion with Mr. Ricky Rodriguez of SFS Financial Solutions.

@Mike Partee thank you for the intro!

Great episode today @Kak, it was awesome to hear the expert breakdown of PR law 20. But it will take more than a 4% flat tax rate to move me back to the island; too many other outlying factors. It's still a great strategy business-wise.

What's funny is that I just moved into a new place a few months back and two of my neighbors are running businesses through PR. (Maybe it's a sign)

As I am sure you probably have already heard on @Vigilante s Mind Your Business.

I too am launching a radio show! I have been a bit of a troll with the new avatar for a week.

EDIT! Here is episode ZERO for people that want to learn what the show is all about!

Please pardon our early sound quality! It gets as good as the trailer eventually!

Episode 1 has been live for about 12 hours, but the big announcement is NOW! Check it out on your favorite podcasting app! @MoneyDoc and @Roz both found it pre-launch. Good job guys.

Apple
Spotify
Google

I think the first show ever is pretty damn good considering!

I have ONE correction to make as I was re-listening ... Vertical integration = buying up supply chain and delivery chain... Horizontal integration = buying competitors.

Dave and I plan to work together to provide amazing business content for your listening pleasure! I hope the forum enjoys as much as we enjoy putting this all together!

Just followed on Spotify. Looks like you've been recording an episode just about every day, great execution. Im looking forward to catching up
