I'm applying for a dead-end sh*t job at a grocery store. On the application, there is an entire page to list previous jobs.. I have none. So I wrote this letter to attach to my application. I'm wondering if it's overkill.
I imagine I'd still get the job without the letter, but I want to put myself in the best position to get it it. If I don't, I'll get a job at the nearby hospital (gotta' love connections), but it's slightly farther and I'd need to take a bus. (It's a 2 minute walk from my house to the grocery store... I basically cross the street... google says it takes 32 seconds :smug2: )
Here's the letter;
To Whom It May Concern,
I recently moved to Calgary to pursue my university education. However, my program does not start until September 2011. Seeing as I have just arrived in the city, I have no current obligations, and therefore I am able to work any and all hours (including overtime) that you may require.
Once my program does start (not for another 7 months at the least), I will need to revert to a part-time work schedule, but I would like to continue my employment with Calgary Co-Op Oakridge Centre due to its convenient location.
Considering I live a mere 5 minute walk from the Oakridge Centre, I will always arrive punctually, no matter the weather, road closures, transportation delays, or any other circumstances.
I’m also perfectly fluent in English and French, having received my high school diploma from a bilingual school. English is my mother tongue.
I was told by my peers to embellish my work experience. However, I am an honest person, and embellishing (which I equate to lying) would not be in accordance with my values. It would also show a lack of respect for your organization.
So here are the facts. I have never held a formal job. I have however, worked for family members and volunteer organizations in the past. I’ve done everything from clerical work (filling, labeling, taking inventory), to replacing light bulbs in tanning machines, dog walking, processing aluminum for recycling purposes, and replacing windows in residential homes.
My charitable work has mostly revolved around organizing fundraising events raising money for cancer research. (Most recently I helped organize Step Up For Cancer, a two day long fundraising event held at Molson-Percival Stadium in my previous home of Montreal.)
Now that I am 18, I feel that I am ready to seek my independence. I can think of no better way to do this than by getting my first job, and what better place than Calgary Co-Op! It’s location at the Oakridge Centre could not be more perfect for me.
I look forward to working at Calgary Co-Op!
