Really want to step up my coding knowledge, and had a thought. With the surge of AI and machine learning, which aspect of coding do you think will benefit the most?

Will back-end development start to be more automated? With all of the "drag and drop" website development tools, will front-end become too easy to have a high price tag?

If you were learning code today to start a business, which way would you lean?

Or is AI programming the actual future?

Front end and back are important all together when creating websites. There are content managers that make it much easier to make a website and make it quicker like WordPress and SquareSpace and such.

But A.I. operating the back end is a TOTALLY different field which involves programming.

If you're getting into web design and web development, then only worry about how to create a website yourself with stuff like HTML, CSS, JAVA, WordPress and such.

A.i. automation is a different field.

Learn full stack first. Choose a work flow to build a website from scratch using popular technologies. I’d learn react and WP plus everything related to that. So that include HTML, CSS, JS, basics of PHP, and maybe one OO language for later down the line.

After that you can specialise in either front end or back end as both are equally as important.

The future is being able to apply technology to solve problems. Start with the problems, pick up the technologies you need to solve them.

Since you have to learn JavaScript to do front end, just use it on the backend too. I use to do PhP and JS. Now JS end to end. Makes your life so much simpler. No data transforms and all knowledge you gain is fully applicable everywhere.

Use node.js and react and it’s hard to really make a distinction between the code except where it is executed.

Also, with JS you can use a wrapper like electron or Cordova and produce packaged contained desktop or mobile apps. Sure native is a bit faster, but for most things the difference is negligible.

This. Find business problems and find the technologies you need to solve them.

Three Contradictory Thoughts

Thought 1

If you're really concerned about having both frontend skills and backend skills, learn Javascript. Between NodeJS and all the various JS-based frontend frameworks right now, JS will help you solve 90% of what you'll ever need (assuming you want to code something from scratch). As a rule of thumb, if it can be coded, it can be coded in JS.

There's also countless libraries that can help make things like AI a lot easier (including several by Google).

Though when I say learn Javascript, I mean learn Javascript. Like any language, it can take years to master. And there are lot's of ways to code bad Javascript because it's so flexible. With JS, if you're good, you could have a basic site up and running within a day.

Thought 2

With that said, find a problem as people have pointed out. There may be better tools that Javascript to solve the problem you'll find.

But there's even more of a reason to find a problem first: technology is changing very fast nowadays.

Especially in areas like web development, it's not uncommon for there to be radical changes every 6 months. For instance, I started coding websites 5 years ago. Today, there are several best practices that are the exact opposite of what was best back then. Back then, you'd use Bootstrap. Now, Bootstrap is often considered bloat and shouldn't be used. Back then, you'd use JQuery. Now, there's active movements against using any JQuery. These examples are just the tip of the iceburg.

But this leads to an issue if you don't start with a problem: by the time you find a problem, most skills you'd have learned will be obsolete. Anyone dependent on JQuery or Bootstrap has now had to learn completely new skills to effectively code a website.

Thought 3

In terms of either the frontend or backend becoming automated, in my opinion there will always be room at the top for those that can do things manually. For instance, drag and drop editors are easy, but they produce slow sites. A well-coded site could have half the code of the equivalent drag-and-drop site (estimation). Hence, it could be twice as fast. The same goes with the backend. And the more original your problem is, the more likely there won't be an easy tool to automate your process.

Really want to step up my coding knowledge

I'm curious as to Why.

Ask yourself what specific benefit spending your time learning to improve your coding accomplishes. Is it part of your current business plan? What are you using that skill for? Is it critical for your business success?

I'm not saying not to spend your time improving your coding. I'm just saying stand back and analyse the reason behind the decision. Is it a need or a want? Could your time be better utilised elsewhere?

I've had many businesses over the years and I came to the conclusion that I spent too much of my time doing tasks that would have been much better delegated to others while I concentrated my time on increasing business income/profits. If you own a business you are the captain of your ship. You need to get out of the boiler room and on to the bridge as soon as possible.

To do that it is wise to spend your time learning the skills that cannot be delegated and will push your business forward. People skills, marketing, business strategy, finance, networking, etc..

Just thought I'd throw that into the mix. Improving your coding may well be the best use of YOUR time at THIS present moment but it may not be for others that view this thread in months to come.
