Found this yesterday via Producthunt, looks kinda interesting. Amazon has launched a kind of crowd-sourced Kindle publishing arm called 'Kindle Scout'.
From what i can see, you submit your book [must be new, unpubbed], readers download a sample and vote it up if they like it: if your book gets lots of votes and is selected by the Scout team, you 'win' a $1,500 advance, 50% royalty, a 5 year rolling contract and marketing support from Amazon.
They currently only accepting books in romance, mystery/suspense and sci-fi - also looks like its US only authors for now. Figured it might be interesting to the self-pub community here

Edit: forgot to add that readers/voters for their part, get free copies of the winning books if they're published.
