Now that I have your attention, I came across an article about a skill called inversion, thinking what would happen if your goal was to completely fail, and drawing examples on how to increase your success as a result. Having read the article it made a lot of sense, and I highly recommend it for anyone looking to eliminate distractions and focus in on their goals. Check it out, and let me know your thoughts.

Definitely an interesting read.

This is certainly an interesting article. The skills of empathic listening is not easy and this is one of my area of work as well. In my opinion, preventing failures is inevitable, but able to foresee and focus on the strength is a critical skill to have.

I absolutely agree, empathic listening is definitely on my list of improvements too, it's much easier to wait for the other person to finish speaking to say what tou want to say, although that's exactly why miscommunications happen.

The idea of doing a premorterm analysis on a goal or a project in order to determine the major stumbling blocks to avoid them and make the journey easier seems just as important as visualizing the success and taking action to get there. It's like changing the oil in a car to make sure it runs smoothly, it'll make the progress that mich quicker.

Inversion is one of my top analytical tools.

If you want to achieve X, one of the first things I do is ask:

What things could I do to ensure that I do NOT reach X?

This allows me to see mistakes that might be otherwise hidden.

Other analytical tools you don't want to sleep on:
  • SWOT Analysis
  • Root Cause Analysis (sometimes described as "Why Chain")
  • Probabilistic Modeling (including thinking in terms of EV)
  • Systemic Thinking (system => variables => optimization)
  • Higher Order Consequences

I'm going to do some further research to find out more about the other types of analysis you've just mentioned. Where did you discover them?

Two books I've read recently that have been a great help with active, empathetic listening.
The Coaching Habit - by Michael Bungay Stanier
Never Split the Difference - by Chriss Voss

Honestly no idea, I put them together during the years.

I do remember this article about EVs.
Wow, thank you for that recommendation, I'm going to look into poker as a way to strategize, after reading the detailed article I've come to an understanding of +EV, and why the decisions I've made up to this point in my life have led me to where I'm at. Incredible concept!

About that, I heard good things about Annie Duke's book Thinking in Bets.
I haven't read it yet though.

it is like the Ninja Way of thinking, like they always think of the worst-case scenario and prepare or act to avoid/prevent/react on it
If you've already thought of the worst case scenarios and prepared, what else is there?

Haha, another article of interest to add to my list. Just got another book from Audible on overcoming sales call hesitation, thanks to a recommendation of another member of this forum.

random stuffs that may affect or will affect the outcome, or is that the probability model?
It adds a new weapon to the arsenal, definitely not a stand alone system though. Think of it like a car with great airbags but without breaks, the airbags are terrific, but without a way to stop the car it's just a matter of when before it crashes if you drive it.
