So instead of me taking the government curriculum, I can pick what I want to learn
People already do this. It’s called child-led parenting or eclectic homeschooling.
For some driven, curious children with parents who keep a large library this approach is phenomenal. For children who are timid or who give up when faced with challenges it is a sure fire way to raise a one-sided arrogant human being.
I suggest you research pedagogy. There are several schools of thought about how to educate ppl. The way each describes their WHY about education can be... jarring. For instance if we’re educating ppl so they can be successful through a job then are we just cogs in the system who have to work? Is a person’s worth based on their ability to work?
If you’d like to study one teacher’s discussion on the history of education in America I highly recommend John Taylor Gatto’s books: Weapons of Mass Instruction or The Underground History of American Education. The latter may still be available for free online. It’s massive but eye-opening.
