TL;DR When you tell kids that they are intelligent, they have an (unwarranted) sense of self-worth. They fear making mistakes to grow and improve, because they want to keep their worthless title of "intelligent."
Unfortunately, I used to be a victim of this practice. Reality eventually pried this out of my skull, but it was quite painful.
