Hi, I'm interested in starting an online store probably through shopify. I know what type of products that I'd like to sell and which manufacturer that I'd contact. But before I pull the trigger and start spending money I'd like to ask if anyone has ideas on the best ways to promote and market products online? I do have some experience with ecommerce, I "unsuccessfully" opened a shopify store a few years ago and tried drop shipping but I ran into trouble getting enough traffic onto the website. My thoughts are you can have the greatest product in the world along with the best website but if no one knows about it then it's a moot point. I would love to hear from anyone with digital marketing experience or ecommerce experience? Thanks...

Are you able to get anyone to raise their hand before you even create the site? Is there anyone you already know who’d indicate they’d buy, or know someone who would?

Make sure you also look at Google.

1) Have a look at the Google Keyword Planner for possible search volumes.

2) Then look at either the Google Ad Preview Tool or just do searches yourself. See if ads show up, study them, and their landing pages/offers. Make a note if you see Google Shopping Ads or not.

I have a Shopify store.

To promote it you'll need to spend money on ads. Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat, Google, Tik Tok.

If you don't have money then you can use influencers. Send them stuff for free and they'll do a shout-out on Instagram or Tik Tok

Or you can go down the path of Spanx who didn't advertise for 16 years as she got her product in the stores. But she had a very unique product.

If I can go easily buy the same product somewhere and get a quality product shipped to me at a good price quickly, then you are not helping anyone and will likely not make much money, nor do you deserve to.
+ even if you sell cheaper, most people would rather buy from established brands/ somewhere someone purchased something before.

I had a lot of success by attending in person, offline events and setting up a booth where I could pass out business cards, sell some products, and tell people about my brand.

That is a microcosm of what large brands do. I think they call this being a “brand ambassador” or being an “evangelist” when you go physically promote the product/brand.

The goal would be to start getting in front of real people offline, selling some to get them to tell their friends about it, spread the word, and scale, scale, scale.

Eventually you could have promotions all over the country, in addition to your standard online paid ads.

Actually, I think @MJ DeMarco did this with his first book by attending some events and seminars. Don’t neglect the offline actions.

Good point. We chat about selling at live events in this episode of Let's Chat Sales.

Hi,

As a former Shopify store owner and working now with many eCommerce brands, my suggestion to you is to focus on a long term brand awareness, this can be achieved by improving your store SEO, guest posts, an embed forum into your site, a high quality blog posts, and try also to connect and partner with businesses who can help you get more traffic.

If you have the budget, you can run some paid ads on Facebook, Google, Bing, ... this will bring you instant traffic and probably some sales.

Best of luck
