I'm completely new to making websites so I don't know how much to charge. The website is for a small business and maybe a max of 5 pages so nothing fancy.

Ask yourself - what will your service be worth to your client?

What is your client's goal?

What will you do for him?

Will you increase his revenue by $ X?

Is it fair to ask $ Y for your service because of that?

Will it be a one-time project or do you offer ongoing support?

If you haven't yet, read this:

Hope this helps!

Even if you think there's a chance of additional work with the client, do not charge less than you'd be happy to do the work for if it ended up being a standalone piece of work.

Make sure at a minimum you are happy (delighted?) if they agree to your proposal.

If they agree and your shoulders slump, then you've done something wrong.

If you are stuck with prices two good methods are

"what is a budget you would feel comfortable working with?" (let them decide - works better with good clients, you can still negotiate upwards)

or

"This amount allows me to spend the time needed to build you a great website" (when you pick a price)

There is a lot of different factors here though that make this question very hard to answer - who your client is, the detail of the new website, the value it will be to them, their current website or lack of, your ability etc. Try look at it from a "whats it worth" POV and then just ask for a percentage of that.

@Usman

The best piece of advice I ever heard about pricing?

"Get it wrong."

Don't get precious about it. State a price. Learn from it.

A very common way for graphic designers to charge is by the hour. Depending on the experience, location, and many other factors, the hourly rate can be anywhere from $8.00 (outsourced overseas) to $500.00 per hour (For a high-level consultant)! This is a huge difference but I have seen both and just about everything in between. See Below for common rates.
