How I use the forum...

I want to share a few tips about how to use the forum.

Please free to add yours as well, to help others make it a more productive experience here.

So, to get started, my first action when I get into the forum is to press the Settings link on the top menu.



This shows me the list of threads I am subscribed to that have been updated since my last visit.

I consider this the most important link on the forum as it helps me track faster the conversations that I have been involved in.

Once there, I click on the Go to first new post link. As its name implies, this takes me to the newest part of the conversation since my last visit. No need to guess where you were on a 7 pages conversation. This helps you track it faster. (highlighted on read in this picture).


You will see also the Unsubscribe link for each conversation. I think I've used it once, and by mistake, but it helps you clean your list of conversations to follow.

About subscriptions....

I've seen a lot of posts to good topics, where people simply go and adds something just to subscribe and track the conversation.

Enters the Thread Tools menu item:




And, as you imagine, this will make the thread show up on your settings page, to track what's going on without the need to add irrelevant posts to the conversation.

These are the first two I can think of.... Please feel free to add any tip you consider useful....

I use to subscribe to every thread so it automatically send me an email, but about a month or two ago I started getting notifications 12-24 hours after a thread was updated. I still get emails saying I have a PM, but I usually read them a day before I get the email. I had to turn notifications off because of this. Might this be a problem on my end?

I just started using the subscription like you do above and I have to say I like that better. Thanks for the tip!

I turned on signatures.

No idea why it was off by default but it really helped me get an idea of what everyone was doing, some of the best threads, good blogs, etc...

I have the same PM/Email problem.

I've seen the same.

I suspect the email server is getting overload with many threads for many users, but will ask MJ to take a look.

Settings (top) > General Settings (left) > Show Signatures (down the page a little)

Click General Settings in the My Settings menu on the left
Scroll down to the Thread Display Options section and enable Show Signatures

This is exactly how I use the forum as well.

And - I'd like to add that I often check on the forum through the app called Tapatalk on my phone. Excellent app that is worth the couple of bucks it costs to purchase! You get instant notifications every time there is an update to any subscribed thread, etc. Only thing you can't do from it is to give speed/likes.

I have it but have not used it for this forum yet (couldn't find it there).

Also, people using tapatalk, PLEASE remove that annoying message at the end of your posts ("posted using tapatalk" or something like that)
