Hey everyone,

Hope you're doing fine today - i've just got a situation in my life that i need a bit of clarity on and i'm hoping there might be some people here who can give me their thoughts. Im asking FLF specially cause most people here have an entrepreneurial mindset which i relate to and resonate with vs getting advice from an average joe who is not someone worth getting advice from.

I wont go into the full details but my question is - As someone whose very interested in building a high level online business but still has to currently work a regular job to pay the bills before this happens, would i be best to work in a very high paying job (train driver - top 10% of salaries in my city & country) with zero useful business skills OR work in a much lower paying role but one that lets me build practical useful skills to online marketing (Adwords management).

My thoughts are that the high paying job gives me heaps of capital to play with and invest in my business (advertising, outsourcers, etc) and also allows me to live close to my workplace so i have a shorter commute and therefore more time to invest in the business however it won't provide me any useful or relevant skills for my business. The Adwords job however will pay me to learn high level Adwords skills and general online marketing that i can use on my own business, and will also let me see inside other successful businesses, however the pay is much lower and wouldnt give me as much capital to invest into the business.

Any thoughts?

There are way too many variables at play for use to answer this in a valid manner. Whether or not you have a family, what your expenses look like, etc. These are all variables that will contribute to the best approach for you.

I will tell you, I opted for a "middle of the road" approach. I am building an app, and need time outside of work to devote to that process. As such, my current job is not as high paying as what I was doing (consulting), but it pays enough to meet my needs and frees up about 20 extra hours per week.

The answer would become more clear to you once you commit to a type of business. When you have the commitment the requirements become clear.

Thanks for your advice everyone, i truly appreciate it.

Ive decided to go into Adwords as it's an area where ill develop some valuable skills, work regular 9-5 hours instead of exhausting shift work, and also its a job where ill be able to develop my network and surround myself with smart successful people which im sure will pay dividends down the track, all benefits that will give me long term success and a financial payoff in the long run.

Cheers everyone!

Thanks profound - yeah i didn't want to make the question to detail heavy, just keeping it simple. But im 31, have no family or dependents, i do want to start a family before im 40 though and will need decent finances by then.

Yeah, im currently building an eCommerce site.

My answer is Sales jobs.

Sales people on AVERAGE make more than none-sales employees and entrepreneurs.

Sales job also offer decent downside protections. You wont starve if you hustle hard in sales but you cannot say that about entrepreneurship.

If the AdWords job pays your bills I would personally go for that.

In fact I did.

Back in 2009 I discovered AdWords when I was an IT contractor on €XXX/day.

My contract came to an end and instead of finding a new one I took my first job in 10 years, at 25% the take home earnings I’d been used to for a decade.

It was a job in a team of 35 AdWords specialists spending €120k/day. As you can imagine, i learned a lot in that team. How much would people have paid to get that education?

I only took it because the job paid my monthly bills though. If it didn’t then I wouldn’t have taken it.

Just my story of what I did. The decision is ultimately yours.
