Hi. I’ve been a lurker here in the forums for a few weeks now and thought the time was right to introduce myself. I’ve read Unscripted and am about halfway through The Millionaire Fastlane – I realize I read them in the wrong order, but it is what it is, and Unscripted as a title intrigued me more than TMF , so I bought that one first. I guess I thought TMF would be just another “Get Rich Easy” book telling me to do something the author wasn’t doing himself. My apologies to MJ!
I think I’m a bit older than most of the other posters here – I’m 47 years old and have lived in the slow lane for far too long! I really can’t complain about my work environment, or about helping someone else get rich, since I work in a charitable organization and have a great boss and good co-workers. I’ve just gotten to the point in my life where I dread trading five days for two, mowing the lawn and weeding (really, any type of yard work), helping my wife with the housework, doing all of the big to-do things around the house and not having the time or energy to do the enjoyable things in life. Wash, rinse and repeat until I die is looking less and less attractive every day! I haven’t had an FTE, but lately I’ve had quite a few FTM’s.
Anyway, I’ve had a couple of unsuccessful entrepreneurial adventures. I won’t go into too many details, but one was creating unique designs on ties (you know, the kind MJ doesn’t have any of), and the other was an online fitness contest. I guess they weren’t total failures because I did learn something from each of them.
From the first one, I learned that if something isn’t quite right, I need to not accept anything less than 100% satisfaction. A few of the designs of the ties were a little off (colors were wrong being the main one), and I should have gone back to the artist who created them and asked her to make some changes. That was probably 12 years ago.
I started the second one about three years ago because I enjoy both running and lifting weights to stay in shape. I know there are a lot of fitness contests out there and I thought I would combine two things I enjoy into one contest. The problem (or at least one of the problems) is that when you look at a Venn diagram of people who are interested in signing up for a contest involving running, and people who are interested in signing up for a contest involving lifting weights, you see there is a VERY small overlap. I basically knee-capped my scale right out the gate, and since my magnitude was small too, well, it was a recipe for failure.
Fortunately, neither of those prior mis-adventures was financially ruinous, or my wife would have divorced me when I told her what I want to do. To her credit, she’s supportive of this and all my other wacky ideas.
So, what am I doing now? A fitness app. Specifically we will be focusing on an app that will let people create, track, store, and analyze their weightlifting workouts. I know there are a lot of them already out there – I’ve looked into more than a dozen of the most popular ones – but we’re positioning ourselves to be unique in this market.
Most of the apps don’t allow you to easily customize your workouts – after you tell them what you want to accomplish (such as “get stronger” and “get bigger arms”) the app tells you what workouts to do. We want to create something that is totally customizable, yet easy to use.
We’ve looked at the pain points users of the other apps have, and believe we are addressing these issues. The biggest issue is that the apps advertise as free, but to get any real use out of the app, you need to pay the monthly subscription.
If people are interested, I can go into more details about how we’re skewing value.
The app (it’s cross-platform, so it will work on both Android and iPhone) will be completed around the end of June, and I can’t wait to get it out there and start showing people what they can do with it. I know I need to temper my expectations, and that it’s going to be a long grind, but I can’t wait to get the first download and experience that addiction MJ talks about.
It’s good to be here, and I look forward to gaining a ton of knowledge and contributing what little I have to offer.
