Time to hold myself accountable.

After running a number of successful businesses, selling up, starting afresh and crashing out with a horribly ill-advised investment (and by that I mean investment based purely on my ego and the belief I could never fail!), the last two years have been spent in the trenches building things up from scratch again.

Reputation. Finances. The lot.

I'm now at a point where I'm in a really good place with it all, but I recognise that I'm coasting.

Just doing enough to get by and starting to things as tick boxes again as opposed to be invested in their success.

Through offering a variety of cut price and free services, I've gained a really strong reputation in the entertainment industry in the UK working with actors, musicians and personalities to raise their profiles online. To put it bluntly I've made sure to focus on those who have the popularity to make them appealing to an audience, but are completely useless when it comes to tech skills or having some kind of team.

Now I want to capitalise on this.

I've begun to approach the ones I work with with the proposal of a partnership whereby I work with them to set up influencer and affiliate partnerships in return for a % of the payment they get for the deal which has been accepted.

Currently it's working well and is a good return on investment.

However, I have to admit since the middle of last year I've been coasting on really implementing this. I've identified a few new "targets" and am working with one on a trial basis to see how well we work together, but that's purely referral based or a random scroll on Instagram and finding a good fit. I've also talked a lot about having a website add on to these services so we have a magazine style site to send people to for more detail on any sponsorship deals (and the ability to track a lot more data).

I'd really like in this year to be able to make $100,000 purely from this, something that's very achievable if I take action, so time to kick that a$$ of mine into gear.

Plan of Action
Week 1

  • Create a influencer indentification process so I can have others finding leads for me to follow up with
  • Map out an Influencer On Boarding process so I can quickly and easily know who and what to be focusing on with these individuals (I'm currently spending too much time going back on myself as I have incomplete information)

How many followers do you need to make instagram work *worth it*? I had 11k mostly-loyal followers (10-25% engagement), but I've been inactive for a year so I'm down to 10k. Still, my audience are active and I received over 900 messages in the past year without even being on so I know they're still wanting to support me.

Social media is a tool I use for business and I don't feel the pull of personal social media anymore, but I'm open to getting back into it if I can make some extra cash. I know the audience are loyal and supportive and wouldn't even mind ads/sponsors/etc. but at the same time I don't really have a niche so I'm not sure :)

Would love to hear your thoughts!

Hey @Imgal - best of luck with this! Sounds like you've put in a ton of time already, which should stand to you in the long run. Building those relationships through "paying your dues" upfront is a barrier to entry most people don't cross... So hopefully you see returns on it soon!

So, is the goal to basically create an influencer marketing agency, where you're the point of entry into the market?

Woo! I love this thread, as I had a similar idea planned out last year. However, I figured out that I hate the social media industry, so I´m not fit for that. Please keep us updated and of course best of luck hitting that sweet goal!

With the entertainment industry, I don't usually approach people below 40k. The reasoning there though is I'm looking for people with enough of an audience / draw that they've managed to grow an audience despite themselves and are going to be worth the initial time and investment of me throwing my services at them for free to get them on board.

Away from that industry, honestly if you're tight enough in on your niche then anything above 5k can get you small deals, though I'd say 10k is the best starting point. For example, if you were a mens black t-shirt focused account with 10%+ engagement on your post and 10k followers, you're going to be a lot more appealing to black t-shirt brands than one who purely posts their whole outfit every day(black t-shirt or not).

Happy to have a look at your account / give any advice I can!

Thanks so much for the encouragement! Yes, that's exactly the angle. It's got to the point where when I'm talking to brands about one person they already know I'm advising others and so are asking about them. It just feels like its time to commit publicly and professionally to it. It would also be good to cut out the prospecting part of it. I have to admit there's a bit of a buzz trying to find the next "target" to win over, but I'm realising I'm treating more like some kind of game than serious business.

Time for me and the business to grow up a tad!

Thank you so much! Honestly I walked away from the social media industry a few years ago because I didn't like the way it was heading and the same copy and paste social media management mentality was causing me to lose the will to go on. It's kind of how I got into this in the first place, I approached a celeb who was causing me too much pain with how awfully they were doing stuff and asked if I could help them out for free as a little passion project. It sounds counterintuitive but taking the money part out of it actually turned back on my passion for it all.

Exactly the way I felt. I am not fit in the way how ´fake´' most influencers are, I happen to know two semi-influencer girls and it's unbelievable how they fake situations for a few extra likes, and how depressed they could be if that one bikini photo didn´t hit a new record. But there is definitely cash to be made!

100% with you! I totally avoid the fitness / beauty segment all together and focus on those who actually show the reality of life. If they're posting airbrushed bikini shots I'm going nowhere near them. If they're posting themselves with odd socks and unbrushed air they're my kind of people... and increasingly the brands people want to.

Keeping myself accountable. Managed the first one that I'll be throwing into Notion.so (my new love affair for everything in my brain) and tidying up so then I can get some VAs / students out there doing that initial research stage for me.

Second one got a little lost, however that was because I spent a lot of last week in discussion with new brands and potential clients so while I didn't actually get it done, I do have fresh in mind what worked and what didn't dealing with these people so I'm going to sneak that in as a half win. I also agreed on a new partnership deal on a membership site which is already at nearly 1000 members after only two weeks so looks like that was a good gamble.

This week I'll get the On Boarding process done and looking to add new 10 brands as possible tie-in partners.

Exciting times. It's going well!

I'll be following your updates @Imgal as I'm friends with a couple Instagram influencers who I can do this business with if I ever decide to go your way. Goodluck :smile2:
