Sorry but i have to comment. I don't want to critic you but i feel i have to warn you.

Moving and living in Brazil after one short vacation? You think when you live there and have to work there it will be a party all the time with the most beautiful woman flirting with you day in day out?

I mean i noticed in this threat you keep mention the woman. Personally i don't think that's the best reason to move to another country (doomed to fail especially if you want to setup a business) but also you'll see that's not gonna be the case in Brazil when you're permanently working and living there.

An economic downturn is a real estate investment opportunity.

Do you have experience in real estate? Do you have insight in Brazilian economics and day to day trade? Do you know how Brazilians conduct business?

Yes when the Brazilian Real is high and you trade your Dollars or Euro's then you will have some value that day in Reais. Then you buy a property in Rio. Copacabana or Leblon, I presume? Be sure to bring millions. Anywhere else you really have to know what are the demographics of that particular neighborhood and future municipality plans, what's the crime rate and so one. Information that's pretty hard to come by.

Now you have property in Rio in what you think is a good neighborhood. You want to rent it to Brazilians. But these Brazilians are all experiencing a economic downturn. The only thing good at you bringing foreign currencies was that you did exchange it. Now you're also a part of the Brazilian economy. Which is in a downturn by the way.

Remember buying is easy but selling it with profit is a whole different thing.

Also when buying property in Brazil you'll get your leverage in the details. So you have to really know your stuff. Or ask a despachante do it for you. But then you give away your control. Don't expect to learn any tricks of the trades from him or her since they want you to stay dependent. Something you will find out soon enough over there. Misinformation or no information at all since they need you to keep counting on them. This game continuous in every trade you like to get involved in.

Rio is amazing. It is like a resort town with beaches and tourists, yet it is a huge city as well.

The crackpot dictator said he supported gun rights. So he can't be as bad as the previous rulers, who despite the 2005 referendum de facto were not allowing gun purchases.

Answers like this makes it very clear you don't know what you're getting involved in. Every time someone says something bad about Brazil you wave it away and turning it in a good thing.

Crime rates are just as high in Detroit or Chicago. Are you obligated to choose between living in Detroit, Chicago or Rio de Janeiro? I lived almost for 6 years in Rio and believe me it's dangerous. A human life means nothing there. Gringo or Brazilian.

Defending the just elected president Bolsonaro? Please don't do that when talking to a cabdriver or sitting on a corner in Rio eating a salgado. You might not survive it. Bolsonaro is a despicable man and your argument of the 2005 referendum about gun rights is way off and has nothing to do what is really going on in Brazil right now. This whole gun rights thing is just symbolism politics.

What if Lula was president today and someone said Brazil is now a socialist or even communist country with strict gun control. Would you answer have been "yeah i know, to bad Bolsonaro isn't the president"?

It's almost if you want only see the positive side of things to trick your own mind in believing Brazil is a real paradise. A very dangerous thing to do. Especially in Brazil.

Now you're starting a business over there and have to go trough the terrible Brazilian bureaucratic mill. Every single thing needs a stamp or a cancel. Every time when you need something explained you'll get a answer, but is it's the right answer? Remember they like to help but want to you to stay dependent as long you have money in your pockets.

Vai dar tudo certo is what you gonna hear all the time. But is it?

Sorry to say this but i think you're somewhat naif about Brazil. Not saying that you don't have to try it and see for yourself but it seems that you wave away every dangerous thing and real problems that exist in Brazil.

I know Brazil for almost 30 years and lived there numerous times. Believe me i know Brazil. Again i don't want to disrespect you but i think you are to excited about Brazil and even maybe for the wrong reasons (woman) Correct me if I'm wrong.
Going in blindsided with in your head ideas about a wonderful Brazil that's totally different from the real situation will get you nowhere. Especially when you want to do business.

Just want to warn you. Hell, if you really want to give it a try you can ask me anything you want to know I'm happy to help you. But please be more objective when starting a adventure like this and open your eyes to see the many problems Brazilians are facing everyday.

Go.

People on this forum are ignoring the fact that people's priorities don't always have business as #1.

If women is what you value, then go and get them. If you don't like American women, and think that Brazilians are beautiful, then go.

Different things make different people happy.

I'd rather have a wife I find beautiful than money and be surrounded by women that I don't find attractive.

Good luck @Supercar

Greetings all!

I have achieved 95% of my earlier life goals like 10 years ago. The remaining 5% were not worth the costs that I would have to pay to get them. I tried other ventures and adventures, but eventually lost interest and motivation.

I have just found the motivation again! Last week I went on vacation in Brazil. Rio de Janeiro and Cabo Frio. LOVED, LOVED, LOVED every minute of it! Loved the country, the people, the culture, the food, the weather, the beaches, and of course the women! I smiled all the time that I was there. I want to move to live in Brazil!

I first thought my challenge would be to be able to generate a life-sustaining $30K+/year income while in Brazil. But I could probably pull this off already, if I rent out my current residence.

Another challenge is to be able to stay in the country legally for more than 180 days in a year. I will need a visa for that.

The permanent visa type that I liked the most is the Investor Visa.
Visa policy of Brazil - Wikipedia

There is even a company that assists with everything:
Brazilian Citizenship :: Investor Visa & Permanent Resident Card in Brazil by investment
They make it sound pretty simple. I hope it is not a scam!

The required investment is R$500,000 (US$140,000). Or R$150,000 (US$42,000) if it is an investment into a tech company. They say that this investment can take any form, including buying a piece of land or property, and maybe even stocks, fixed income.. etc!

I know almost nothing about such investments. Where and how would I start learning?

If you have any other advice about Brazil, I am all ears!

Just a quick note, I believe you will have to pay both US taxes and Brazilian taxes if you choose this route. Unless you decide to denounce your US citizenship.

Just something to think about. Best of luck
The conversation has moved on, but I wanted to point out, for any American expats, you can qualify for a foreign earned income exclusion. In 2015, it was $100,800 per person, and it's indexed annually.

Essentially, if you live and work abroad, you must pay US taxes on any money greater than $100,800. That's a pretty significant cushion for the vast majority of people.

Is it true that most of the women in Brazil looks like these? Vivacious, energetic, bold, gorgeous.....you know.

Nope, they're just the top bracket.
There's selection bias on women who get photographed and then their photographs put on the internet.

Interesting fact: Brazil has the most gun-related homicides for a country with a gun ban.

OT: I don't think you have to worry as a foreigner if you use common sense. Most homicides are related to drugs and mob.

whats really impressive is that nearly a 1-4 of germanys population has guns but only 158 deaths. Likewise in France. Simply amazing.

Brazil has over 200millino people. And most of those deaths are in rio and or sao paolo. So go figure. Brazil is a great country with great people and cities like Recife are great.

Funny, my Brazilian friends don't want to go back at all considering the high murder rates, super corrupt police (one of my friends was extorted) & frequent muggings.

Grass is greener on the other side I guess, they'd gladly trade passports with you.

I thought about that. But taxes is not a reason to stop living the life that I want to live. If I have to pay income taxes, that means I have income! Also, there are many ways to minimize those taxes.

All countries have their problems. Fat and ugly dressed women, also boredom, are the biggest problems with there I live now.

Nicer places than Brazil that are much safer

Belo Horizonte, Brasil
I currently live in Belo Horizonte, Brasil as an expat since April and I also idealized the country before coming here due to my many holidays here when I was younger ( in my teen years).

Living and working here is a different story, things work very slowly and many people are very busy or distracted to get things done or have some socially interesting engagement besides partying or drinking. It is not like carnival everyday haha because working hours are long and logistics are tricky.

On the positive side, people are very friendly, weather is quite good (not a real winter lol) and is a fun place to be, with LOTS of things to see and do. Also food is amazing and for someone who has earnings in US dollars, EU or pounds can be very cheap.

If you want to live here but be in a safer place I recommend the south (Florianopolis or Curitiba are good options) and if you dont mind being far away from the beach Belo Horizonte is also good. If you want to come here in Belo Horizonte , you might be eligible for a visa by taking a portuguese course at UFMG

Portuguese for Foreigners - CENEX/FALE

In terms of other south american countries, my country Chile is a good option (Viña del Mar or Santiago) and have heard plenty of good things about Colombia (Medellin especifically). The rest of the continent is unstable in my opinion.

Feel free to message me if you have more questions, I would be happy to help you

These United States
I say go for it.
I've been looking at flights and airbnb options to Rio for a while now. I'm thinking of going to spend a month or two there next month.

I spent the last two months in Colombia. Mostly in Medellin, and the tail end in Cartagena.
I was in Medellin for two months last year too. Nearly perfect weather.
Would be perfect if not for frequent drizzling in the second half of the year.

I got rid of most of my stuff last year, and started traveling the world, slowly. I prefer 1 - 2 month stays to in and out ones.
What I do is - I buy a one way ticket, book an airbnb for a month and head out.
Work (most of my income is location independent), meet interesting people, make new friends, experience different cultures more intimately than a one-week vacation would afford. Then decide where next to go from there.

It's been a great experience so far. Just set the right expectations and you'll be fine.
Some people head to places with warped expectations, and find themselves depressed in a far away land.

Living in Michigan sucks. I haven't seen a single attractive woman in months, maybe years. Sure, I can find them on the internet, maybe, but they are nowhere to be seen in real life, and I live in a college town. Sometimes I have to close my eyes or twist my neck to look the other way when I see some of them. I do not even have any sex drive here in Michigan, no matter what I do, no motivation, very few interests outside of browsing things on the internet and riding my motorcycle. This is no life to live. No such problems in Brazil for me.

I regret not buying a Lambo five years ago. I kept the 911, but I've driven it only maybe twice since. Now I freaking do not even want a Lambo, it is pathetic.

Living in Michigan and working for a paycheck so that I can retire in 10 years and move possibly to the same Brazil? Why not do it sooner, while I still have an interest in life.

I have no illusions about working or running a business in Brazil. I am allergic to bureaucracy and waiting. I am not planning to do much business there. Ideally the business will be in the US while I am in Brazil. My second choice is something passive, or semi-passive. I am not going to be working full-time there. I just need to do some financial planning and see if I could swing it. There is a very good chance that I can.

Hell yeah, I am going!

Not right away though, I want to tie up all the loose ends and sell most of my stuff here. Then I will become a free man. At my own pace. The process is just as fun as the destination.

I am experiencing the same feeling that I had 24 years ago when I left Russia for the US. The right feeling. The feeling of adventure and hope for a bright future. I can always come back, but it will be a crime against the universe to not act on this as soon as possible.

I wouldn't say that. But the men around here have been severely pussified. There are way too many of those extra-sensitive vegan eating metrosexual types where I live. Must be all the soy in the food and the estrogen from the birth control pills in the tap water.

So you'd say you're looking for a real man

I'd say Rio and Sao paulo are a bad idea. Anything to the north and it's too hot, and I mean too hot 40C+ all day long and in the winter 33-35C. Also look at the demographics, south has more caucasians north has more africans, what you choose depends on your personal tastes.

I don't think the idea that if you don't have a good social circle with hot women in a large city where you currently live, you'll be able to get one here automatically. It will take just as much effort as anywhere else.

Crime is a thing you need to worry about, granted not as much if you look imposing (exercise, height etc), and don't go into bad areas, wear jewelry etc. Don't pick fights in nightclubs even in VIP and table areas, as an outsider you won't know who you can fight without being stabbed afterwards.

The culture here is different, specially among the elite, if you make enemies you'll likely get assassinated. That is so normal people joke about it, and use it to discourage you from fighting or annoying them (They'll say things like: "You know an assassin costs X$." and smile).

The police here is bad, most of the time there won't even be a murder investigation, the psychos abuse it of course.

One particular group you might not expect to be dangerous are farmers, don't mess with one. They are basically rich men that are used to killing, they have to be (in here if some people 5+ come in to your land and set up a house there or plant stuff, the government will give that land to them, but this rarely happens because those people have a tendency to disappear). You'll recognize them by their boots, elaborated belt buckles, and expensive looking lumberjack and polo shirts.

In general I'd recommend building an elite social circle where you live or in a better party city instead. There are great programs on this topic, google RSD Luke. But if you want to come live here for a few years it's fine and you'll have a good time with proper planning and research..

I have this idea of going to Russia in a few years and live there for 3 months to study russian, learn from the culture, etc. Would you recommend it?
Depends on what you want. Where are you from?

I assume that you want to know Russian girls.

They follow more traditional dating norms. Men pick up the the tap for everything. They like to receive flowers on their date.

They look for marriage seriously in their early 20s because quality men are limited there (due to alcoholism). If they get above 25 the competition will be tough because you have new group of 18year old flushing into the market.

So they are not interested in no rxu

Please give me the list! I am not yet done exploring the world!

Ha I'm personally not done myself, but anywhere else in Latina America would be a superior option than Brazil. Not a fan of the highest murder rates and hear nothing but bad things from friends that grew up there.

Costa rica? Domincan Republic? Peru?

I think those countries may be better only statistically, on average. But in reality, you probably just need to know where to go and where not to go. Like some ares of Detroit and Chicago, the murder rates are close to 100%, but just 20 miles away we do not lock doors, cars, or worry about our Amazon packages being stolen.

I prefer bigger countries, more places to go without having to stop to cross borders. I like Portuguese more than Spanish, and I have a curiosity about all things Brazilian. I think it is Brazil for me.
