It's easy to forget that with the somewhat recent advances of technology a single person, or small team, can make and distribute a "real" film. 16mm and hi-def video made it possible to produce such movies, since about the 90s, but people still needed a distributor. Nowadays you can self-distribute over various content networks, like iTunes, Google Play, Amazon Video, etc. If you retain all the rights, this should be a potential Fastlane venue.

Described briefly here:

I remember when Spalding Gray's "Swimming To Cambodia" monologue was filmed in 1987, grossed over $1M, and got him future movie deals.

If self-distribution had been possible then, he might have been able to create a FL business with his monologues. I'm surprised some of those Youtubers that talk for many hours, don't edit their best stuff (if there is any), and distribute it.

This article has some really useful information in it for people considering a low-budget film-making enterprise. It describes the 4 types of low-budget films, and many of their attributes, that have traditionally done very well:
  • Model one: Extreme, clear-concept horror films
  • Model two: Documentaries with built-in audiences and/or powerful stories
  • Model three: Validating, feel-good religious films
  • Model four: Very high quality dramas
