FDA requirements on pet treat imports?

Anything related to sourcing or importing products.

Good afternoon,

Could anyone kindly provide me a brief insight on whether there is any FDA or other US government requirements on importing and selling online imported pet treats and dietary supplements? (the ones I want to import and sell do not need to be refrigerated).

Thank you.

The only country from which you could be permitted to import pet treats would be Canada, and even Canadian imports are very restricted.

FDA is not involved. You need to check out the Animal and Plant Health Inspection section within the US Department of Agriculture. You just might find a loophole, but I would doubt it.

Thank you so much for your valuable insight, Mr. Walter. That is quite disheartening to hear though.

My items are all single ingredient but not from Canada. I will need to call/email them to be sure.

But there are products like bonito flakes sold for cats at pet stores. I am pretty sure they are from Japan. How could they have imported it then? (not that I will be selling those)

There are some exceptions, but finding out if your product would qualify could be a long process.

I hope you succeed.

FYI, you need to be registered in every state to sell pet food/treats online in the U.S. and meet each state's specific labeling requirements if you are the guarantor. See www.aafco.org for more info.
