I think many of us have come across this question. What's in a domain name? Early internet adopters that were able to pickup names like cars.com, etc.... at minimum could have sold the domain for a small fortune.

These days most of the big names are sold, and now it's come down to paying 2k+ for a semi-known name, or even a combination of letters as opposed to coming up with something completely unique.

What are your thoughts on purchasing something for thousands as opposed to building a unique name?

BTW yes that domain is available for bidding in case you were wondering but this is more of a general question.

I'm all for it, but only after you have an established business. As for the domain in the title, I'm not a big fan and don't think it's worth more than $100.

The name doesn't matter if your business is profitable and brings value to your customers. I agree with MJ on this one. To prove my point, think about Snapchat or Facebook, for example. These names mean nothing without the products behind them.

Or you could infringe on a trademark and hand over a court order instead of a check... ;)

Just teasing but always something to think about in this litigious society we live in!

In 2016 domain name like cars.com doesn't worth shit compared to a brandable domain name.
We have purchased majority of our domain names for ten bucks: they all are one-word, highly memorizable and good sounding .com domain names. Meanwhile, stumbled upon a lot of premium domain names with 20k+ pricetag that are nowhere near as good.

A lot of opportunity in the industry, for both, buyers and sellers.

Just sayin'

So I looked into a domain name that I wanted to purchase.

"Oh, this name is pretty unique and I could probably get it for 100$".

$20,000.

What the hell.

The domain was literally a combination of two words.

This stuff boggles my mind.

Thanks all... pretty much what I thought. The pretty domain name, at least this day in age is just something you buy to make yourself think you're doing something as opposed to building a brand.
