I wonder what would happen if Apple or Google started an online regionally accredited non-profit college . Something like Western Governors University. There are already such colleges where you can get most of your credits from outside sources, and then quickly graduate. The college would have the backing of a major tech company, and the tech company would have a place to make educational donations. Walmart has an agreement with several colleges, including the for-profit American Public University. If Apple gave preference to people who graduated from an Apple-backed college, that would give it a certain prestige. Much like Facebook had when it was only for Harvard students. It could also be a lot cheaper than a brick and mortar college.
I think Apple and Google recently dropped the requirement for a college degree, which has helped a lot of people without degrees. They did that because they saw no difference between degree-holding employees and non-degree-holding employees. This could be seen as Apple waiting to enter the MP3 player market until they could do it right. Apple could say, "We dropped the degree requirement because the existing colleges weren't doing a good job, but to improve this situation, we are now opening Apple University."
They might even be able to open a for-profit nationally-accredited college.
If they opened a non-profit one, and used it for massive tax write-offs, it would seem like a win-win, with traditional colleges being the only losers.
